Project Update #5 – Countries Included with the TraqCloud (TM) SIM Card

Thanks again to all our backers, we are 46% of the way there and 40 days left. We’re just two dads, and our success is our ability to provide excellent customer support to those who have made their pledges and answer any questions you all might have. In return, we ask that you share our little project with your friends. With that said, here is an update based on some feedback from all of you:

Which Countries are Supported by the Included SIM Card and Service Plan

This is our #1 question and here is a partial list so far. This list will be updated in our FAQ as more countries are added. We have to negotiate each country so if yours is not listed, please send us a message and we will see if we can add it. This SIM card works in over 200+ countries, but each one has to be negotiated to fit within our budget. The network operators in these countries have agreed to work with us:

  • USA
  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • All of E.U countries
  • UK
  • Ireland
  • Australia
  • Russia
  • South Korea
  • Hong Kong
  • South Africa
  • Japan
  • Brazil
  • Thailand
  • Malaysia
  • Turkey
  • Israel

We’d like to blow out our goal, but can only do that with your help. Please share this project with your friends and family and help spread the word!

Thanks,

High Priority Update: Enterprise Class Data Privacy & Security

Many of you have asked, and we thought we should shed some light on our Data Privacy & Security. Our co-founder Matt Moalem comes from the background of working with such companies like Microsoft (Azure), Yammer (Enterprise Social), Parlano (now Microsoft Lync), etc..

Our goal is to follow global best practices for data integrity, data security, data privacy, and litigation export control. We’re not there yet!, the reason we have Kickstarter is to allow us to formalize our technology infrastructure to support those needs. In the near term, our plan is to utilize the inherent policies for data security, and privacy out of the box for Amazon Web Services (our cloud server). Our roadmap dictates that we take every available precaution for each and every one of our users.

Data is “not” free – there’s a cost for data, and the technology that supports it. Like with any SaaS solution in the marketplace we’ll follow some of the guidelines as laid out below, but will be subject to change as the technology, security, privacy landscape changes, we’ll continue to innovate with best practices to get those updates integrated in real-time:

Customer Data Protection

  • We classify and treat all data as confidential, using inbound and outbound low-level logical firewalls to ensure that data cannot be leaked between TraqCloud Networks, Servers & Users. Sensitive production data is never migrated or used outside of the production network.

Application Security

  • TraqCloud is designed and built according to secure development best practices with regular security reviews incorporated throughout the design, prototyping, and deployment process.

Internal & Third-Party Testing

  • Our goal once fully funded is to routinely run internal and external vulnerability scans and penetration tests, plus work with industry leading third-party firms for in-depth quarterly security reviews.

Data Center Security

  • TraqCloud’s offsite SSAE16 SOC1 Amazon Data Center provides 24/7/365 video surveillance, biometric and pin-based locks, strict personnel access controls and detailed visitor logs.

Business Continuity

  • User data is backed up multiple times a day and protected with strong encryption on disk.

Usage Data

  • We may use statistical data, analytics, trends and usage information derived from your use of the Services (“usage data”). Usage data includes, for example, aggregated quantitative information about active users, activity, topics, and groups. Some ways we use the usage data include operating, improving and personalizing the Services and our offerings, as well as other TraqCloud product upgrades and services. Except to provide reports to you or others in your organization, we do not disclose usage data in a way which is identifiable to you or users in your TraqCloud Network.

Support Data

  • Support Data is the information we collect when you submit a support request or run an automated troubleshooter, including information about hardware, software, and other details related to the support incident, such as: contact or authentication information, User GPS Data, information about the condition of the computer and the application when the fault occurred and during diagnostics, system and registry data about software installations and hardware configurations, and error-tracking files.

Data Location

  • Your TraqCloud Services’ data may be transferred to, stored and processed in the United States or any other country where Amazon or its affiliates, subsidiaries or service providers maintain facilities. Amazon abides by the U.S.-EU Safe Harbor Framework and the U.S.-Swiss Safe Harbor Framework as set forth by the U.S. Department of Commerce regarding the collection, use, and retention of data from the European Economic Area, and Switzerland. To learn more about the Safe Harbor program, and to view our certification, please visit http://www.export.gov/safeharbor/

Changes to TraqCloud Privacy Statement

  • We will occasionally update this privacy statement to reflect customer feedback, changes in our TraqCloud Services, and updates to applicable data privacy laws and regulations. When we post changes to this statement, we will revise the “last updated” date at the top of the statement. If there are material changes to this statement or in how TraqCloud will use your information, we will notify you by either posting a notice of such changes before they take effect or by direct notification. We encourage you to periodically review this privacy statement to learn how TraqCloud is protecting your private information.

As you can see by the above, we are very serious about Data Privacy, Security, and Integrity. We’re getting there, and it’s part of our overall roadmap to not only provide you a low cost device, but piece of mind that when we launched our project on Kickstarter that we had this in mind. We also encourage feedback and guidance. We’re not perfect, and if and when our project becomes successful, fully funded, we plan on taking every step to ensure the highest level of customer satisfaction.

Thank You,

TraqCloud Team

Project Update #3 – Service Plans, Cloud, API & Roles Explained

First of all, a big thank you goes out to all our backers, we are 1/3 of the way there and 43 days left. We’re just two dads, and our success is our ability to provide excellent customer support to those who have made their pledges and answer any questions you all might have. In return, we ask that you share our little project with your friends. With that said, here is an update based on some feedback from all of you:

Service Plan Questions Answered – more formal FAQ coming soon!

Quite a few people have asked about how the device and service plan works. Let me summarize it here:

  • TraqCloud can be acquired “only” through Kickstarter till our campaign comes to a close.
  • TraqCloud can be acquired with or without a SIM card. In both cases, you still have to register your device with our SaaS (Software as a Service) Cloud platform.
  • The monthly pricing varies. If you use your own SIM card, the monthly fee is $3 / month per device. You can choose to activate this plan for a single month or multiple months spread out. There is no activation fee or cancellation fees.
  • If you pick a reward with the SIM card included, the monthly fee is $5 / month per device after the included time runs out. The included time, will start when you first activate the device and run until the time expires. After the included pledged service time expires, you can choose to re-activate this plan for a single month or multiple months spread out. The key is to re-activate the plan at least one month within a year’s time. This will keep the SIM card active.
  • All of our TraqCloud devices for Kickstarter will have the same firmware. This means they will all work the same way and they will all securely send their data to the TraqCloud cloud servers. The developer api can be used if needed to transfer the data securely to another server of your choice.
  • The TraqCloud device works on all the GSM cellular frequencies being used around the world. This includes 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 Mhz.
  • The included SIM will support most major countries. We will be publishing an exact list in the next update.

Cloud Service Platform (Software as a Service)

  • Hosted on Amazon Web Services (secure, trusted and backed up).
  • Data from each TraqCloud will be sent to server using a public / private key encryption scheme. This provides security for the data getting to the server.
  • Developer API will be available to access data for their TraqClouds through a combination of HTTPS (encryption) and or OAuth.
  • Developer API for those who pledged will be coming soon.

Project Update #2 – Developer API

Thanks for all the pledges so far, you have helped us hit 20% of our funding goal by day 5. We’d love it if you can continue to refer all of your friends, tweet about your experience with us, and “Like” our page on Facebook.

With that said, many of you have asked about the developer API and we have listened. The TraqCloud API will allow developers to securely request data from a specific TraqCloud device within a specific UTC time range. This will then allow developers to create their own UI or use the specific location data as needed on their own server.

We’ve just started the outline of how the TraqCloud API will work and we have come up with a list of questions that we are working on answering:

1. SOAP or REST Architecture?

2. HTTP or HTTPS transport?

3. JSON or XML?

4. Should OAuth 2.0 be used to secure requests?

We will be adding a $99 pledge that will give early developers an edge. It will provide example code and direct technical support via email. Otherwise you can wait until the API has been released into general availability where everyone can use it via our cloud developer kit and program.

We’d like to blow out our goal, but can only do that with your help. Please share this project with your friends and family and help spread the word!

Thanks,

TraqCloud Team
