I'm Michael Divine, fine-art painter and visual artist. I’ve been making art professionally in various media for over 15 years. I work primarily with acrylics on canvas, but also frequently in pen-and-ink as well as other visual media, both independently and collaboratively.

I'm publishing a full color, hard-cover book of my artwork.
This 750 copy limited edition book + 26 copy slipcased and lettered special edition will be filled with paintings and drawings that I've created over the past 15 years. The format and layout follow a cohesive narrative, providing insight into the dominant themes and processes throughout my body of work. The collection includes work that has previously been featured in galleries and various events, as well as new work that has not yet been publicly shown, and a number of special historical pieces from my archives. We have never before amassed so much of the collection in one place like this!
The book will be:
- Approximately 144 pages
- Over 100 paintings and drawings
- Full color, heavy weight, glossy paper throughout
- Cloth bound, foil-stamped, hard cover with a dust jacket
- Introduction written by fine artist Martina Hoffmann
This book is limited to a run of 750 copies. Each copy will be signed and numbered on a bound page. Being a limited edition, once they are gone, they will never be re-printed, making every copy a guaranteed collector's item. Being avid art book-collectors ourselves, we know that this drives the value up considerably, making each copy a nice little investment.
The special 26 copy lettered edition will be housed in a foil-stamped slipcase and will also be signed by Martina Hoffmann.
The entire run of books will be printed, packaged, and ready to ship before the Autumnal Equinox, in plenty of time to arrive well before the holiday season of 2013.
We love books!
Books of all kinds have a special place in my heart. Our home library is, frankly, pretty epic, and a seemingly endless source of joy. We have hundreds of art books in our collection from individual artists and artistic movements throughout time - from the ancients to the Renaissance, and all the way through to modern visionaries. These books capture the broader vision of the artists they represent, and have provided us with incalculable inspiration. Artists rarely put all of themselves into one singular piece; we are a collection of work expressing countless aspects of an artistic vision over a span of time that can only be grasped when viewed as a larger collection. Yes, we can easily find low-res images one-at-a-time on the web, but we all know that nothing on screen compares to the detail and vibrancy that can be captured on the large-format, glossy, printed page. Books also allow for a more comprehensive narrative to be told within their pages, and in that, they are a work of art in themselves.
In addition to the fantastic team of people who already work with TenThousandVisions, we have found a great publisher to print, bind, and shrink wrap our run. Our team has already been hard at work with the layout and text. We are also thrilled that Martina Hoffmann has graciously accepted our invitation to write an introduction. By the beginning of June we will be ready to send the final copy to the printer. There is a three month turn around for printing and we will be able to start shipping books and pledge rewards in September!
However, to make this project happen we need to reach a critical mass for printing so that the books can be kept affordable.
Book publishing is a big task. There are a number of initial expenditures, like high-quality photographs of paintings. Naturally, the biggest expense is the printing itself. We found that working with bigger publishers gives us far less creative freedom and we want to be able to work in a much closer relationship with you, the art-lovers. So we are asking for your help - through pre-orders and contributions for the special packages. Together we can make this happen as a community, without the need of the traditional publishing chain.
Between book printing, binding, shipping, and other costs such as art photography and proofing, etc, our initial expenses are around $15,000 for the minimum run of books.
As we said, it's a big project and that's why we are asking for your support! We chose Kickstarter for this reason: They don’t collect your pledge unless the project’s goal has been reached. Since this project has a very defined set of costs for us, we’re not interested in accepting any donation from you unless this project is going to happen.
You can be certain that your contribution is going directly to making this book project a success!
What are we offering in return for your support?
Besides our eternal thanks and massive gratitude, we are offering advance copies of the book for below the retail price; posters; various types of archival prints; and original and commissioned artwork. Even a small donation to the project will garner our gratitude and we’re happy to show it by sending you some artwork. By pre-purchasing the book now, you are a co-producer of this publishing project, and it won’t happen without you. If you are inspired to donate even more than the pre-order, you can get limited edition prints and even original artwork. This is a rare opportunity to snatch up some original art for less than it is usually offered!
Along with the 144 page full-color, hard-cover book, other tokens of our gratitude include:
• Small prints and posters
• Giclee prints on archival paper
• Giclee prints on canvas
• Paintings from the collection in all sizes
• Commissioned artwork
A COUPLE EXTRA NOTES:
Previously, backers who pledged $120 or more were the only ones to receive a signed copy. We realize that our new announcement of the signed and numbered limited edition aspect encroaches on that. Because of that we will be including an original drawing pulled from the sketchbooks in each book given out to the $120 and up pledges. And, no, it won't just be some dinky doodle. :)
All rewards include shipping costs within the continental US. International pledges are a bit more because the costs for us are significantly higher. Also, all book deliveries and accompanying pledge rewards will happen in the fall of 2013, while pledge rewards that do not include the pre-release of the book will be sent out with an additional small token of our gratitude when our goal is met in May. Thank you!
How else can you help?
Share this Kickstarter campaign with your friends! Post it to Facebook and Twitter! Tell family that this book is on your wish list! Give it to friends as a gift!
Any and all contributions and promotions help and we are incredibly grateful for your support!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Risks and challenges
Our goal is to fund this project. We have our printer, principal photography, contributors, etc, all lined up. The written copy is in final edits, and the layout for images is likewise complete. All we are waiting for is the funds to finish the last of the fine-art photography. We also have information for back-up printers should something unforeseen befall our printing press, though they've been in business for quite some time so we don't expect anything to happen to them. The only thing left is financing the project. So it's up to you! Help us make it happen. We appreciate your support with this project!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
