“Legend has it the gods used the world as a battlefield. In this war, they recruited all manner of beasts and creatures from across the multiverse. When the gods abandoned this world, their soldiers were left behind to fend for themselves. The world was built on conflict, and that conflict continues to this day. During the Disappearance, while most of the monstrous races and magical creatures were absent from Atheles, humans and dwarves still found themselves at war. Now, the others have returned, and our world is consumed by chaos once more. My life was turned upside down by them, and I have dedicated my life to hunting and removing the violent beings who find themselves back in our world.”
— Excerpt from the Creature Compendium, A Guide to Hunting the Monsters and Creatures of Atheles by Etahn Belbane, monster hunter, and Delgon the Librarian.
The Creature Compendium, A Guide to Hunting the Monsters and Creatures of Atheles will be a 100+ page book filled with over 90 creatures for the gloomy lands of Atheles. The book will be hardbound, designed to look as if it is the leather journal of a monster hunter*. Inside each creature has descriptive text, stats for the SagaBorn RPG, and an illustration or two. This will provide GMs all the information they need to start building adventures in the Dark Return setting, give adventurers a leg up on the monsters they may face, or give a collector a book filled with wonderful artwork.
The book is told through the eyes of two well known monster hunters from Atheles, Etahn and Delgon. This gives the descriptions a personal touch, and a view into the larger world of the Dark Return.
*This will be a high quality hardbound book, printed with faux texture to make it look as if it is bound in leather.
Last year, thanks to my amazing backers on Kickstarter, the SagaBorn Roleplaying Game was successfully funded and created! You guys rock! After a core rulebook, the next book we want to bring to you is a tome full of interesting creatures to fight. We call that book, “The Creature Compendium, a Guide to Hunting the Monsters and Creatures of Atheles.”
The book is written, a lot of the art has been completed, but we need your help to bring this book to the world. We are keeping the Kickstarter focused on making this the best book possible, with the best artwork, a wonderful story, and lots of cool creatures to challenge Sagaborn heroes!
Meet the Writers:
Michael Bielaczyc has been making art his entire life. He has been selling and showing work since 1995, when he self-published his own comic book. Going back to college at 23, he decided that art was going to be his main focus in life. In 2001, he started an art company, Aradani Studios, with his brother Paul. Together, they have shown and worked in shows across America, selling both their artwork and costuming. While Michael has worked for such popular roleplaying franchises as Dragonlance and Castlemourn, his real passion is for his personal work. He works in mediums from oil paint to latex prosthetics, video to graphite.
In 2012, Michael formed Lone Wanderer Entertainment with his oldest friend Dane Clark Collins. In 2016 he launched the SagaBorn Roleplaying System.

Dane Clark Collins is a writer of fantasy, science fiction, and the occasional nonfiction currently living in the Greater Philadelphia area. He is a lifelong student of philosophy, physics, and all manner of strange and esoteric nonsense, and brings all of this background into his writing.
Dane has been a musician since he was given his first guitar at the age of 10, and some of his work can be found on his web site. He finds his own music quite enjoyable, as he is very narcissistic.
Besides that, he enjoys sushi, has three spoiled dogs, builds his own web sites, reads for two out of three hours of the day, plans to open a dog shelter, and many other things that his readers are dying to know.
"A lakava is a horror to behold. They are the possessed body of an infant or small child who has passed. The lakava changes the body, as if the innocent vessel is trying to reject such an abomination. Just to behold one, or hear its cry is enough to shake a person’s grip on reality. " - Etahn
Sam Flegal - Sam is a well known artist and RPG aficionado. He helped make sure the creatures fit the flavor of the Dark Return
Aiden Walker - Aiden helped with the original stats and design of iconic monsters.
Adam Bennett - Adam cleaned up the monster entries and kept their powers within reason.
Tom Cadorette - Tom has been involved as a freelance editor on many different RPGs over the years, including SagaBorn and Schwalb Entertainment's "Shadow of the Demon Lord". He makes sure our words are pretty and grammatically correct.
Meet the Artists:
An ankheg is a burrowing creature who hunts by luring its prey into a trap it has set. The ankheg burrows in loose soil and creates a pit that slows the hunted. It then bores up from its hiding place to attack. It will attempt to grab its prey and drag it back into the tunnel as the loose soil closes up above. The ankheg grows to be 10’ long and weigh around 800 lbs. Creaturi Obscuria
Includes the two Dark Return metal miniatures: the boggart and tentacle crawler, and the plastic miniature: the gorgalug.
The Dark Return is a gothic fantasy RPG setting set in the lands of Atheles.
In ages past, the lands of Atheles was a world filled with wonder, mythical creatures, and abundant magic. But long ago, all of that changed … A terrible war spanned the lands, a war fought not only with blood and souls of countless mortals, but with mystic machines of war, great mythical beasts, and powerful dark magics that ravaged the world. In the end, something happened that has been lost from human records, something that ended the Aradan War and left the world without magic. The magical creatures, and even those close to magic, like the fey, seemed to vanish from the world.
The old kingdoms crumbled, leaving behind city-states and large tracts of unclaimed lands. The survivors lived in darkness for years, and have spent the past seven centuries rebuilding what was left of their world. The lands were ravaged by famine and plagues for untold years and the humans have trudged along, afraid of the myths and legends of days long past.
In the East the land is harsh and twisted, the remnants of the dark sorcery that had been used in the Aradan War have left the lands almost uninhabitable, save for small pockets of civilization. In the West, in the wake of the plagues, people have become isolated and exclusive. Fear has driven people to be wary of anyone or anything new. Their superstitions have lead to witch hunts and lynching of those believed to still use magic. People have become so downtrodden that even their belief in higher powers has fallen to little more than lip service.
But all of that began to change in about 20 years back. Children started showing the ability to use magic … real magic. The elves started to come out of their forests with limited interactions with humans, and the dwarves began to trade again, traveling the roads, plying their mechanical and trade works. Now, whispers of growing dark powers, heroes, and a new dawn have begun to creep into this rain-soaked and gray world.
Risks and challenges
We have previously published several RPG books and have run several successful Kickstarter campaigns. The adventure is already written and has been extensively playtested. We need funding to pay our artists to produce the interior art, pay for formatting the module for publication, and pay for printing! We will be working with the same team of people as we have for previous RPG publications, so we are confident the art and the printing will be of the same quality you've come to expect from SagaBorn products.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
