About

THE PROBLEM

Local and regional journalism is stuck in a vicious cycle. Cutbacks lead to diminishing circulation, which leads to more cutbacks, and so on and so on.

Many newsrooms no longer have the ability to effectively cover the communities they serve. The measure of local journalism is no longer the impact a story has within a community, but rather page views and uniques, likes and shares. They rush to tell you the who, what, when and where, but no longer endeavor to answer the most important question, why?.

We believe people are ready for a new approach. We believe we can start over. We believe we can put the focus back on the journalism itself, and we believe we can do this with the large and growing pool of experienced journalists the industry has left behind.

WHAT WE WILL DO

  • We intend to deliver the highest-quality journalism in Worcester by always putting the story first.

  • We will rebuild the community bound by the shared experience of relevant, meaningful journalism.

  • We will create opportunities for businesses to effectively communicate with customers and grow their businesses.

  • We will do this in a way that is affordable for readers and advertisers.

  • We will do this with a pledge to try to keep all the functions of our business rooted in the local economy.

  • We will do this with a pledge to grow our ranks as we grow our audience.

  • We will assist like-minded people in replicating this model across the country.

HOW WE WILL DO IT

  • We will build a user-friendly and consumer-friendly digital presence.

  • We will tell you what we are doing, but we will not inundate your email inbox or social media feeds with click-bait updates or teaser headlines.

  • We will complement our digital presence with a well-designed and well-edited Sunday newspaper.

  • We will charge just $1 a week.

WHO WE ARE

Mark Henderson is a 30-year veteran of local and regional media. He began his career covering high school sports for the Clinton Daily Item. He joined the staff of the Telegram & Gazette in 1990 as a part-time copy editor. He rose to the position of deputy managing editor/technology in 2005 and assumed the role of online director in 2009.

He oversaw the paper's implementation of a metered paywall in 2010 and the paper's mobile website, mobiletg com, which he is proud to say was developed locally. He also oversaw version 2.0 of the paid content in 2012. In 2013, the T&G was ranked in the top 10 nationally in combined print/digital audience growth and ninth nationally in total number of digital subscribers.

Fred Hurlbrink Jr. began his career on his 19th birthday at Tivnan Field in Worcester. The next day his first byline appeared on the Sports pages of the T&G, where he worked for five years. He was a reporter at the Sentinel & Enterprise (Fitchburg) before moving onto the copy desk at the MetroWest Daily News (Framingham). There he was a night news editor, assistant sports editor and award-winning special sections editor and designer. He has nearly 20 years of community journalism experience from practically every corner of a newsroom. He is an accomplished project manager, editor and award-winning designer. He has spent years working, living and studying in Worcester. It took him about 15 minutes and two nachos to sign on to this project.

In addition, nearly a dozen people have signed on as advisors. These individuals have more than 200 years of experience in regional and local media.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

If you are a resident of Central Massachusetts, a member of the community of journalists hoping to make an impact, or someone who believes it is time to cover issues that matter, we need your help.

We will use your support to hire staff, build out our site, design our print product and find local companies who will handle the jobs that let us focus on creating compelling journalism.

We are offering rewards for pledges ranging from $10 to $5,000.

Risks and challenges

While we've had initial talks with vendors who can print, insert and distribute our print edition, we have not finalized agreements and this could take some time.

We've already started working on the site, but integrating with a secure payment vendor who can fulfill all of our requirements will take time to develop and implement.
