“Today I believe in the possibility of love, that is why I endeavor to trace its imperfections, its perversions." -- Frantz Fanon
“These... are survival strategies-maps, blueprints, guidebooks that we need to exchange in order to feel sane, in order to make sense of our lives.” –Gloria Anzaldua
“The only way we can [fight oppression] is by creating another whole structure that touches every aspect of our existence, at the same time as we are resisting. -- Audre Lorde
Hello Kickstarter Family,
My name is Martha Gonzalez and I am the singer, songwriter and percussionist for QUETZAL. We are a band from East Los Angeles that has been dedicating our time and creative spirit to the community for nearly 20 years. The above De-colonial theorists; Frantz Fanon, Gloria Anzaldua and Audre Lorde encapsulate the sentiment of a new project we have titled, QUETZANIMALES. Through trials and triumphs of urban animals such as pigeons, ants, tecolotes (owls), roosters, squirrels, and butterflies we reveal stories of love, respect, dignity, autonomy, struggle and humanity. By telling the trials and triumphs of urban animals in Los Angeles- their social and political order-we find that their stories of love, struggle and redemption are a reflection of our own humanity.
Tylana (Violin), Alberto (Percussion), Peter (Cello), Juan (Bass), Quetzal (Jarana, Guitar, Bajo Sexto) and myself have been tirelessly working on Quetzanimales and have now reached an end stage. Rather than engaging conventional industry routes we have chosen to reach out to you (yes, YOU!) so that we may continue creating music that remains committed to expressing the dignity, resistance, and struggle of our communities. With this campaign we hope to raise the funds to mix and master the recordings and to incorporate cutting-edge imagery, video, and other mediums that compliment the vision of the album. We turn to you in hopes that you will support this vision!
By backing this project, you do several things at once. 1. You are contributing to the spreading of messages against neocolonial struggles, AND 2. You are supporting community musicians that insist on staying autonomous in a time where corporate greed finds new ways to take advantage of us -our intellectual and creative property.
For all of these reasons we hope that you consider making a contribution (any amount) to the QUETZANIMALES album. We are proud of our first concept album and we invite you to be a part of QUETZAL music history!
HELP MAKE QUETZANIMALES A REALITY!

Meet The Band
The music of Quetzal is at once visceral and intellectual. It makes you move, it makes you sing, and it makes you think. Sometimes thought of as a rock band, its members draw from a much larger web of musical, cultural, and social engagement. On Imaginaries, they creatively combine shades of East L.A.’s soundscape, traditional son jarocho of Veracruz, salsa, R&B, and more to express the political and social struggle for self-determination and self-representation, which ultimately is a struggle for dignity.
Martha: vocalist & percussion
Quetzal: bajo sexto, guitars, jarana & background vocals
Tylana: violin & background vocals
Peter: cello, background vocals Juan, bass & turbo-didley

WHAT WE NEED
To make this album we need twenty thousand dollars (20,000.00 USD).
We need to raise this funds in order to pay for the mastering, mixing and pressing of the album. In addition, we want to incorporate cutting edge social media into our website in order to emphasize the ideas we’re expressing in the album.
BUDGET BREAK DOWN!
• Studio/Tracking $5000
• Mixing $5000
• Mastering (For CD & Vinyl) $3000
• Publicity $4000
• Duplication, Artwork, Graphic Design, Video $1200
• Kickstarter commission (9%) $1800
• Grand total $20,000
It is important to note that this twenty thousand dollar budget does not include compensation for the hundred plus hours of dedicated work by all members of Quetzal.
If we reach our goal and exceed it, we will allocate any extra money towards publicity to increase visibility for the album and towards the production of music videos.
What we have completed so far: Composition, arrangement & recording.
What we have left to do:
1. Mixing and Mastering: April 2014
2. Duplication, Artwork, Graphic Design: April 2014
3. Promotion/Marketing: April 2014
4. Printing of CDs: June 2014
5. Beginning date to send copies to backers: July 2014
6. CD release approximately: July 2014
Risks and challenges
We will finish this album and with your help it will be released this Summer. However, we want to have a quality (mixing, mastering, post-production) concept album that incorporates cutting-edge imagery, video and other mediums.
Our obstacle is merely having the financial support to put all the elements together to make this project more than just a finished album.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
