About

Bram Stoker, one of the most highly celebrated authors of Gothic literature, created what has become one of the world’s most notorious characters - Count Dracula. Stoker’s novel, first published in 1897, has become an inspiration for authors and producers of vampire lore for the last 120 years. Deriving from Stoker’s deeply-rooted interest in death and the un-dead, which was incited by a childhood illness as well as years of research into European superstitions, Dracula provokes a sense of mystery and unease in its readers that has not since been achieved in horror fiction. Visitors will be able to see an array of Stoker’s personal effects that have been made available to the public for the first time, as well as personal notes and edited manuscripts of his world renowned novel, in Bram Stoker’s Dracula: Origins & Revelations, opening in September at the Millennium Gate Museum in Atlanta, Georgia. The collection explores Stoker’s vampire creation and the writing of Dracula, portions of which he penned while on his 1895-1896 US tour with the Lyceum Theatre that included stops in both Atlanta and Savannah during the pivotal years leading up to Dracula’s publication. In addition to Stoker’s Dracula, the exhibit will feature iterations of his vampire character from around the world.

Features of the exhibition include personal items of Bram Stoker on loan by the Stoker family, most of which have never traveled outside of the United Kingdom. A first edition printing of Dracula inscribed by Stoker to his mother and another with Stoker’s handwritten marginal notes for an abridged version of the book are just a few highlights from this collection. These pieces will be displayed alongside newly discovered and never-before-seen images of Stoker and a recreation of the author’s work-space. Capping off the exhibition will be a collection of Dracula and Dracula-inspired cinematic memorabilia from around the world, including a life-size Count Orlok from F.W. Murnau’s 1922 German silent film, Nosferatu.

Exploring the world of Stoker and Dracula, as well as the evolution of vampires over the last century and works influenced by Stoker’s novel, this exhibition celebrates a literary masterpiece that has shaped the way the world perceives the un-dead. The impact this book has had on cultures around the world is clear, with Dracula ranking among the most well-known fictional characters of all-time. Educational programs will include discussion panels with Dracula and Stoker experts John Edgar Browning, Anthony Taylor, and the great grand-nephew of Bram Stoker, Dacre Stoker. Additionally, Halloween events for children and adults will take place at the Millennium Gate Museum during the holiday season.

The Millennium Gate Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
