With the new Trioplan f2.9/50's soap bubble bokeh and ground breaking front focus element, you will enjoy history and innovation optimized for 21st century cameras.

The movable front lens allows for a reproduction scale of 1:4 of originally 1:8 whilst reducing the minimum focusing distance to 0,28 m from originally 0,5m.

In 1916 -- exactly 100 years ago -- Meyer-Optik revealed a lens that became a legend: The Trioplan. The Trioplan became one of the most popular lenses in the world during the golden era of photography, powering Meyer-Optik's rise as a leading German lens manufacturer, rivaling even Zeiss.

Built with an optical construction of three lenses, Trioplan images became famous for their soap bubble bokeh, sharp subjects, and extraordinary resolution. Our new Trioplan project brings back this unmatched legend's most versatile focal length (the f2.9/50) and its artistic charm, but with a superior engineered design, the best materials, and handmade German manufacturing. We did not simply reproduce an old design, we innovated upon it by adding a new front focus "close-up" element. This moveable front lens allows you to significantly reduce the distance between you and a subject, and produce macro photography in a 1:4 ratio.

It will be available with mounts for:

  • Canon EF
  • Nikon F
  • Sony E
  • FujiX
  • Micro Four Thirds
  • M42
  • Leica M (rangefinder not supported/focusing via live view)
  • NEW: Leica L , suitable for SL & T mirrorless cameras (strictly manual, rangefinder not supported/focusing via live view)
  • NEW: Pentax-K

Because we combined the Trioplan's historical image composition with our new advanced production methodologies, we have created a lens that addresses an extremely wide variety of situations. You will be able to execute more with this one lens, and do so with a greater variety of looks and depth!

With this lens you have the ultimate creativity tool for all kinds of environments at your fingertip! For most all camera mounts, DSLR and mirrorless. But see for yourself.

The new Trioplan 50 features a special treat: The movable front lens element to reduce the minimum focusing distance to less than 30 cm ( under 12 inches) and to raise the a image ratio of up to 1:4. This feature takes the Trioplan 50 into the Macro-Spheres.

You will be stunned how perfect it is even for nature or close-up pics. And the front element allows you to turn remarkable items anywhere into a macro photography opportunity.

To get close and include more than the head a wider lens is needed. Now with the Trioplan 50 you can extend the soap bubble bokeh as a creative background for portraits, adding a new artistic flair.

Even if you do not provoke soap bubbles, the bokeh is charismatic . But again it is all up to your creativity – soap bubbles at their best.

The Trioplan 50 gives you endless creative possibilities. It is not only the famous soap bubbles when wide open - just as well dramatic and dynamic fashion photography.

"The ultra lightweight and compact Trioplan 50 is so very versatile that I take it everywhere," said Tamara Skudies, professional studio photographer, outdoor lover and connoisseur of historic lenses.. "No matter if I shoot a super sharp portrait or a dreamy flowery landscape, the Trioplan 50 is my current choice."

Whether you want to show a sharp focused image with gorgeous soap bubble bokeh background or a rich street scene with sharp details, the Trioplan f2.9/50 will deliver. Your creativity will shine with each new image.

“I am always searching for the special and unique picture,” Firat Bagdu, professional portrait photographer. “The Trioplan 50 offers a lot of character to underline a special moment. It’s much more than adding an effect, it’s about preserving a special mood or feeling when capturing a moment. The abilities of the lens are a real enrichment to my portfolio."

Meyer-Optik is committed to producing the best art lens on the market. We insist on building a beautiful lens that empower you the photographer to create outstanding pictures!

Last year, more than 400 Kickstarter backers helped Meyer-Optik to successfully restore the historical Trioplan f2.8/100mm. The innovative and historic, ultra compact, light weight Trioplan f2/9/50 is the next addition to the Meyer-Optik Trioplan family and a must have for all photography artist not only soap bubble lovers.

Yes,  after 100 years a Trioplan still is about the soap bubbles but we added so much more .

The Trioplan 50 is famous for its extraordinary soap bubble bokeh and adds a lot of creative possibilities to your photography. But it is also an amazing tool to get very close to your subject. Since it is so small and discreet it is the ideal lens.

What a little giant!” exclaimed Raffaele Horstmann, photography artist. “I use it for many tasks such as documentary, portrait photography, and even macro and close-ups. All combined in a single lens together with this artistic soap bubble bokeh! This is really an addition to everyone’s camera bag.”

The new Trioplan is ultra compact and leight weight. It weighs only about 200 g – but you will not need much more for your creativity.

But even though we build creativity tools, it is helpful to understand how the lens is built and how it will perform. The new Trioplan 50 is based on the cook Triplet consisting of three lenses, in three groups.

If one uses the new 1:4 moveable front lens, it reduces the minimum distance to the object substantially, from about 0,5 to 0,28m. Additionally, it enlarges the image reproduction scale from about 1:8 (original Trioplan 50) to 1:4 (new Trioplan) 50, which takes the lens almost to macro-spheres.

Furthermore, the new lens offers excellent sharpness, which qualifies the Trioplan f2.9/50 as more than novelty. It is a superior art lens for the most discerning photographer.

The new Trioplan 50 is compatible with full format cameras and APSC (mirrorless) cameras. Here are some more tech specs at a glance:

  • Optical Construction: Classical Cooke Triplet, 3 lenses in 3 groups
  • Aperture: 1:2,9 to 1:22
  • Focal length: 50mm
  • Minimum Focussing Distance:  0,25 m using the front focussing mechanism (ß‘=-0,245 / 1:4)
  • Filter: 35,5mm
  • Clip-On Diameter: 39mm
  • Size:  Ø 62 mm, length 39 mm
  • Weight: 200g
  • Number of Aperture Blades: 12, AR-coated
  • Lenses: Anti Reflex Coating/ Supplier: Schott Glas
  • Format: 24 mm x 36 mm (Compatible with Fullformat and APSC Cameras)

Did you know that our Trioplan lenses are designed by members of the original development Meyer-Optik team in Görlitz. Or that they are handmade in Germany?

Several steps of the lens production in Görlitz and Hamburg
Several steps of the lens production in Görlitz and Hamburg

We took the historic design and modernized it. An old Meyer Optik lens from 1960 might produce the look and feel of a soap bubble boke image background, but it would not satisfy most buyers. Comparing a 1960 lens to today’s standards, most of the materials in the 50s and 60s were not up to current levels of quality.

The Meyer=Optik team set about ensuring the manufacturing and materials used in the new lenses are modernized. This was very important to us.

We insist on top-notch materials for the 21st Century Trioplan 50. The new innovative front variable element has very narrow specifications. Most glass and materials used in mass-produced lenses are preformed. Meyer-Optik sought out a manufacturer who would make the lens precisely the way we wanted it for the Trioplan f2.8/100.

Every lens we build, we ask, “Did we meet our goal? Did we produce a great lens with the Trioplan soap bubble bokeh?”

Exactly 100 years ago, the launch of a lens that became a legend. Today Meyer-Optik is restoring the legendary Trioplan.

What better way to bring celebrate Trioplan lens than with the most versatile version possible, the f2.9/50 with its new innovative front variable element. Innovating upon the classic, modernizing the traditional, extending the creativity to a new modern era: That is our goal with the Trioplan 50.

We restored the Meyer-Optik brand to build lenses that are distinguished in their uniqueness. Today, our lenses are made for those who want more than standard shots for their everyday photography. These lenses are special hand made optics designed for the artistic photographer who craves a special unique look.

We believe that every Trioplan lens is a masterpiece in its own right. The manufacturing of the Trioplan f2.9/50 will be different from the start. Every single component is assembled by hand, meeting the highest standards and qualifications and giving each lens that special, unique touch.

Here is a look at the team that is behind our special project.

Meyer-Optik Goerlitz needs your help to restore this legendary lens and celebrate 100 years of Trioplan excellence. Our new Meyer-Optik facility is just starting after our successful Trioplan 100.

To solidify our production capabilities, we need to offer a superior art lens that can be used by any type of creative photographer, portrait, landscape, macro, street, and on and on. Support the Trioplan f2.9/50 and make sure the photography world has high quality modernized versions of historic creative lenses.

Risks and challenges

Risks
Any new venture or innovation includes an element of risk. The Trioplan 50 is no different.

Meyer Optik has a strong and experienced team of manufacturing, photography and business professionals and have carefully evaluated and mitigated all foreseeable risks and challenges, but may face unforeseen challenges. Although we have already successfully designed, created and tested several prototypes of the lens, and each of the final lenses will be hand-made in Germany, we have not yet started serial production and will only do so once we reach the next stage of our project. Each lens is carefully made and is of high-value and we will take extra precautions to ensure each one is shipped carefully.

Our delivery dates, as outlined in the campaign, are based on careful planning and our manufacturing experience with the Trioplan 100 Kickstarter, but may change due to materials, suppliers and unforeseen events. We will ensure that we keep each of our supporters fully updated. Conversely, it is important that all backers keep us updated of their address before we ship the final rewards. Any reshipping will require additional payments.
