The project…

Ever listen to a great song on the radio and think, man, wouldn't that be really awesome if an orchestra did a cover of this song?

"Uhhh… Not really?"

Well, humor me and pretend like this happens to you. Got it? Okay, cool.

In that case, I have just the album for you, dear reader! Tantamount is an album of orchestral arrangements of well-known songs, performed by a real orchestra. Songs like "Bulls on Parade" by Rage Against the Machine, "Black" by Pearl Jam, "Hysteria" by Muse, "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance, and more, all arranged for and recorded by excellent session musicians in an LA recording studio.

"Hmm, that does sound pretty cool," you say out loud to no one in particular, intrigued. "But where could I hear an example of what one of these orchestral covers might sound like, possibly even by the same arranger and composer that will be arranging the music for this project?"

That's a great (and conveniently specific) question, my friend, and here's a video of a cover of Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name" for you to listen to, arranged and conducted by yours truly:

"This is probably the coolest thing I've ever heard, and now I'm literally throwing money at my screen trying to make more of these arrangements come out. I think a nickel just chipped my monitor."

Well, the easier—and less destructive—way to make this album come to life is to pitch in to this project.

If things go well…

This project basically has no upper limit. The funding goal of $20K will help me put together an album of arrangements the same size and scope as the one above. That would be awesome just on its own. But if we reach past our goal of $20K, that just means more musicians, a little more time to rehearse and record, and even a few extra songs to cover.

"What's this about a possible concert?"

For pledging $50 or more, in addition to the other incentives, you will be invited to the recording studio to watch the recording session as it happens. In the interest of having enough space to squeeze everyone in comfortably, though, if there are a lot of pledges at/above that level, this incentive will instead turn into a private concert on one of the days of the recording session, in a concert hall with enough space and seating for everyone.

As for scheduling and making sure you will be able to attend a recording session/private concert if you pledge at that level, the recording will be split into four days, over the span of two weekends, so we can work together to schedule you to come to one of the four sessions.

Now, because not everyone is groovy enough to live in LA, as an alternative for those who are unable to make it to the recording session, pledges of $50 and higher will have the option of instead receiving the album on vinyl and a high-quality, large-format printing of the album artwork (which is to be designed by an incredibly talented artist friend of mine), along with the other perks.

For any band or orchestra directors pledging in order to get the scores/parts for your ensemble, take note that the arrangements (as they will sound on the album) are going to be fairly challenging! Upon request, I can create more "user friendly" arrangements of any of the music for your group.

The album tracklist…

What will be on the album is still being decided on, and I'm very open to suggestions. "Bulls on Parade," "Black," "Hysteria," and "Welcome to the Black Parade" are pretty much a guarantee, but the rest is being worked out. Here's my basic criteria:

  • It has to be a recognizable song, from the past 30-40 years. Could be something as recent as this year or as old as the Rolling Stones.
  • It has to be one that doesn't have a ton of orchestral arrangements already. We all love "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Stairway to Heaven," but those have both been covered orchestrally many times by many great arrangers already.
  • It can't be a cover of a U2 song. (There's no real reason for this, I just don't like U2. Sorry, Bono.)

About me…

Here's the section where I'm supposed to tell you about all of the amazing artists I've worked with (I studied film scoring with the composer who wrote the Darkwing Duck theme song), the awards I've won (I got second place in my school spelling bee in seventh grade), and then namedrop a bunch of really great, important people who you've heard of (Shakira, Gandhi, Colonel Mustard, Hans Zimmer, the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins, Benny Hill). Instead of that, read more about me on my website if you want, and have some more examples of other cool arrangements I've done, like "Thrift Shop":

 …Or "Can't Hold Us":

 …Or "Wake Up":

Risks and challenges

Things certainly do happen, and challenges and obstacles will come up along the way, but there's really no serious risk here: I've done this project already on a smaller scale, so a full album can definitely be pulled off with the proper funding. The support team I have, from the amazing musicians I work with to the recording and mixing crew to my music copyist are all tremendously talented and experienced, and pulling off a project like this will take a ton of committed energy and time, but it can absolutely be done with a lot of hard work along the way.

One of the more difficult aspects of the project will be making sure that we have all of the mechanical licenses and print licenses for every song on the album to be legally clear to sell both the album and (through the project incentives) the sheet music/scores. However, all proper licensing will be obtained to make sure that no legal issues arise, and part of the funding will go towards ensuring this.
