LUMINNO GlowaSwitch Luminescent Light Switch Plates are PATENTED photoluminescent, insulating light switch plates that make locating light switches in the dark effortless while also sealing wall switch holes from air leaks to conserve energy.

We've developed 2 versions of GlowaSwitch Luminescent Light Switch Plates to work with either a Standard Toggle light switch or a Decorator Rocker light switch.
LUMINNO GlowaSwitch Toggle (Model ST1G) fits and works with a standard, non-illuminated single toggle light switch.
LUMINNO GlowaSwitch Rocker (Model DR1G) fits and works with a non-illuminated single rocker light switch.
Besides the 2 mounting screws, each GlowaSwitch consists of only 2 parts:
1. A translucent glow-in-the-dark luminescent light switch plate made of a specially formulated high performance photoluminescent glow-in-the-dark plastic. The front surface of the plate is substantially convex such that a large portion of the front surface of the plate is visible from any angle in front of the wall.
2. An opaque white sealer gasket made from a fire retardant, air draft insulating, closed cell foam that fits behind the switch plate.

- Because light switches are often located near doors and entryways, GlowaSwitch switch plates also help with orientation and wayfinding in the dark.
Note: GlowaSwitch is not a light. Glow-in-the-dark photoluminescent materials are not directly powered by electricity and require regular, periodic exposure to natural daylight and/or artificial light to charge during the course of a typical day/evening so it is not intended for use in rarely visited areas that see absolutely no light whatsoever for extended periods of time such as a windowless basement or closet. GlowaSwtich works great in frequented places that have windows and lights like most bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms, and hallways.
GlowaSwitch is not intended for use with illuminated light switches that already have LEDs or light bulbs embedded within them as that would not only be redundant, but a powered light source or strong ambient light diminishes the perceived brilliance of the glow emitted. In total darkness, GlowaSwitch gives off a strong, pleasant, visible glow that helps people locate light switches quickly, safely, and easily.
The $1 LUMINNO SUPPORTER (WORLDWIDE) tier has no physical reward but simply gives people anywhere a chance to support our campaign.
Physical rewards starting with the $30 EARLY BIRD tier will be the final products where a single reward is one 3-Pack containing either 3 Toggle or 3 Rocker LUMINNO GlowaSwitch Luminescent Light Switch Plates, 3 matching white foam sealer gaskets, and 6 mounting screws.

The Project in Detail
Improving a Century-old Ubiquitous Fixture
LUMINNO GlowaSwitch Luminescent Light Switch Plates are affordable upgrade replacements for the common, dated light switch plates that do far less. GlowaSwitch light switch plates represent a paradigm shift from a passive product that just sits on a wall and covers a hole to an active one that not only helps you easily locate the light switch in the dark but also insulates the switch from air leaks. GlowaSwitch is a long overdue improvement to the ubiquitous light switch plate which has not seen much meaningful, functional innovation in its century-old existence.
The original toggle light switch was patented in 1917 by William J. Newton and Morris Goldberg in the United States and the light switch plate shown with it in their patent drawing hasn't changed much since. The common switch plate has literally been an overlooked "wallflower" in terms of disruption so we decided to give it some much-needed attention and a hefty dose of redesign thinking.
Typical light switches in use today don’t effectively address the age-old fundamental problem of being easily seen in the dark. LUMINNO GlowaSwitch switch plates solve this problem and were literally inspired by "bumps" in the night. Our aha moment actually came as a result of living in the tourist destination city of San Francisco. We often hosted out of town guests and noticed many of them had difficulty navigating our home at night and would struggle to find light switches in dark and unfamiliar surroundings. People often bumped into things searching for the light switch on their way to the kitchen or bathroom resulting in stubbed toes and potential for twisted ankles. That was when we saw the irony in needing light to find the light switch. This conundrum is akin to needing to see clearly in order to more easily find a misplaced pair of eyeglasses.
Although the idea of a glow-in-the-dark light switch plate is not a particularly new one, most solutions that made it to market simply did not work. Despite stated claims, many didn't truly glow overnight and weren't visible from a distance. Many also suffered from lackluster design and poor execution of an otherwise valid idea.
Alternatively, electrically illuminated light switches and switch plates require cumbersome wiring and consume electric power. The more illuminated switches in a home, the more energy used overall. Multiply that seemingly small amount of electricity for one deployment by several rooms, buildings, blocks, and cities, and it becomes rather significant.
Older neon bulb light switches also tend to burn out over time while newer LED based switch plate solutions aren't bright enough to be seen from a distance and don't stand out in the dark when looked at edge-wise. They're designed to only be visible from the front at relatively close range.
During the course of our design process, we wanted to address another problem: Holes in the wall made for electric switch boxes are a significant source of energy loss. Hot or cold air enters and escapes a building through the hole in the wall made for the light switch and most people haven't sealed them to reduce air draft and leakage. As a result of thermal loss and energy inefficiency, many are needlessly paying higher energy bills.
Our PATENTED Solution
GlowaSwitch light switch plates use an advanced, custom formulated photoluminescent plastic that truly glows overnight to make finding light switches in the dark quick and easy. No more fumbling searching for light switches in dark or unfamiliar rooms. The high-performance glow-in-the-dark plastic has densely dispersed phosphorescent micro-particles embedded within that emit an extremely long lasting, bright, and uniform glow after being exposed periodically to either natural sunlight or artificial room light over the course of a typical day and evening.
The glow plastic is translucent to facilitate light transmission through the entire thickness of the switch plate resulting in superior glow performance when compared to other solutions on the market that use either a thin coat of glow-in-the-dark paint, an adhesive sticker, or small, flat, isolated piece of glow plastic.
GlowaSwitch's shape is substantially convex to facilitate omnidirectional exposure to charging light and overall glow visibility from any angle. Making the entire plate out of photoluminescent glow material means it can be easily seen from afar.
The novel use of a white, fire-retardant foam gasket placed behind the translucent glow-in-the-dark switch plate provides additional functional benefits and proved to be a crucial part of the overall solution. Besides fire safety and insulating walls from air draft leakage, the white foam gasket also reflects both incoming light going through the plate and glow light emitted from the plate back outwards and back into the plate to utilize every bit of charge-giving light. We discovered that "two-way charging" by bouncing light back outwards with the white foam backing to further charge the glow-in-the-dark plate from behind greatly enhances afterglow duration, brilliance, and visibility. Without this white reflective backing, a significant portion of valuable charging light would go wasted traveling into the dark abyss of the light switch box hole.
The simple die-cut foam gasket part is not only low-cost, easy to manufacture, and lightweight to ship, it offers many key functional benefits:
- Acts as a fire retardant layer.
- Seals and insulates the light switch receptacle from air draft.
- Allows for two-way charging. Bounces light back into the luminescent switch plate to charge it from behind and greatly enhance glow performance and brightness.
- Becomes an opaque backing to hide the unsightly electrical switch's hardware and wiring from being seen through the translucent plate.
- As a bonus, it even becomes a protective cushion in the product’s packaging.
GlowaSwitch features an attractive, purpose-driven design that’s optimized for its function. The shape of the product is not arbitrary and serves a deliberate purpose beyond decorative aesthetics.
The patented industrial design is based on a convex shape that is not only beautiful but also allows it to absorb and emit light omnidirectionally.
A substantially convex shape with sloping edges makes more of the frontal, light absorbing and glow emitting surface area visible from all sides and any angle in front of the wall.
This unique form allows GlowaSwitch to better accept charging light from all directions (i.e., ceiling light above, parallel and perpendicular window light, light bouncing off the floor from below) and maximizes the visibility of the glow it emits when dark. It’s designed to be visible from afar at any vantage point across the room.
Not Only Different, but Better
A unique industrial design and the fact that no expense was spared in creating a plate made entirely of premium-quality, state-of-the-art luminescent plastic with included air draft sealing and retroreflective capability separates GlowaSwitch from other glow-in-the-dark switch-finding solutions.
GlowaSwitch's custom formulated, high-performance, supercharging photoluminescent plastic material should not be mistaken for those used in common glow-in-the-dark toys such as ceiling stars used in a kid's room. Cheaper and inferior luminescent materials such as Zinc Sulfide + Copper (ZnS+Cu) are unable to achieve a strong visible glow that lasts overnight and usually dies out within a few minutes after exposure to a charging light source. Instead, GlowaSwitch uses an exotic, far more expensive, long-persistence photoluminescent pigment that supercharges in light to offer an afterglow duration lasting over 10x longer than conventional glow-in-the-dark materials while glowing over 10x brighter. By absorbing ultraviolet light and other visible light in typical day-to-day duty-cycle operation, it can release stored energy in the form of a visible glow overnight. Depending on what it's compared to, luminosity and afterglow time can be up to 30x better than some traditional glow-in-the-dark products.
During the day or in lit conditions, GlowaSwitch has a translucent jade-like appearance.
When dark, it gives off a uniform and pleasant lime green colored glow that easily lasts overnight.
Other inferior products either use glow pigment sparingly or use a cheaper grade of glow material. Their glow components are often accents made with either a tiny piece of glow-in-the-dark plastic or isolated, thin strips of paint that are only visible from the front and are difficult to see at a distance. The few that do use a full glow-in-the-dark switch plate do not feature a purpose-built design and are shaped just like typical switch plates. They aren't designed for omnidirectional light absorption and don't provide maximum visibility from any angle across the room. They also don't have any dedicated reflective opaque backing. We don’t know of any other glow-in-the-dark switch locating solution that insulates and seals electric light switch wall holes from air leaks and draft either.
A fire retardant closed-cell foam was specified in a bright white color for the light switch sealing gasket. Because the switch plate itself is translucent for better light transmission, having an opaque white foam backing not only hides the unsightly electrical switch hardware, electrical switch box, wiring, and wall hole behind the plate from view, it actually makes the switch plate brighter. Furthermore, it provides GlowaSwitch with a unique two-way charging feature as it bounces both incoming and emitted glow light back into the switch plate to charge it from behind. Without a white foam backing, light would simply travel into the darkness of the electrical switch box hole in the wall and go wasted.
By recycling the incoming and emitted glow light and bouncing it back outwards in a reverberating continuous loop to further charge the switch plate, the foam gasket optimizes afterglow performance and brilliance in addition to offering the benefits of energy-saving insulation and a fire retardant layer.
The fire retardant foam material is self-extinguishing and ideal for sealing and insulation applications. Its carefully specified density makes it an extremely effective air draft insulating seal as pressure from a firmly screwed on switch plate, over time, causes the foam to flatten and conform to the shape of the light switch hardware it covers; leaving virtually no air-leaking gaps. It also has a texture and sheen to its skin that further enhances its reflective, light diffusing properties.
Most critically, the majority of commercially available glow-in-the-dark switch finding products we tested failed to offer a sufficient afterglow and simply did not work overnight. Regardless of price, it's money wasted if a product doesn't work.
Easy to Install
GlowaSwitch light switch plates fit over standard toggle and rocker (also known as "Decorator") light switches and installs in seconds using a regular flat-head screwdriver. Because it's charged by periodic artificial room or natural daylight, there are no bulbs, no electricity, and no cumbersome and potentially dangerous wiring operations needed.
To install, it's always a good idea to first turn off power to the switch at the circuit breaker/fuse panel and then perform 3 easy steps:
Step 1. Unscrew and remove any existing light switch plate.
Step 2. Position the white foam gasket over the light switch to seal the wall hole.
Step 3. Install the glow-in-the-dark light switch plate over the gasket and light switch using the mounting screws provided.
After GlowaSwitch has been properly installed, you'll never have to do anything else. It charges automatically whenever exposed to daylight from a window or each time you turn on a light in the room. Then, in total darkness, it emits a pleasant and long lasting glow that's visible overnight.
We designed LUMINNO GlowaSwitch to be relatively affordable and accessible to a huge demographic of end users. The elderly, children, just about everyone! The product is relevant to and benefits anyone using toggle or rocker light switches. That's a lot of folks!
GlowaSwitch is extremely easy to deploy with no special expertise needed. People squeamish about dealing with electricity or performing cumbersome wiring need not worry. Practically anyone can do it!

In a world littered with products destined for landfill after a short time in service, LUMINNO GlowaSwitch represents the antithesis of disposability. The product is self-sustaining because the glow material charges automatically on its own and uses no electricity. It is also a zero maintenance and zero waste product because there are no bulbs or batteries to replace. All materials used are nontoxic and the foam sealer contains no CFC, HCFC, or hydrocarbon blowing agents. The switch plate itself is recyclable even though the product is designed for longevity and won't be discarded in the foreseeable future. About the Creators: Mother and Son Invented!
My name is David Shaw and I’m an industrial designer from San Francisco, California. Since the 1990s, I've been serving a diverse range of clients through my product design consulting practice, Metaform Product Development. I've worked on everything from consumer electronics to medical devices, computer products, scientific instruments, sporting goods, and even a stint designing Star Wars toys.
After many years of designing products for clients, I've decided it's finally time to start bringing my own products to market. Throughout my career, I dreamed of a situation where I could design directly for the consumer with complete creative control and freedom; an ideal scenario where the designer's own unique point of view is left intact and shines through in the final product. The exciting advent of crowdfunding makes this possible and has inspired me to revisit ideas I've kept filed away for years and bring them to life.
For this endeavor, I have teamed up with my most trusted adviser and brainstorm partner, my lovely mom Jane. She's a shining example of how seniors can be incredibly wise and inspiring co-founders and yes, a senior citizen co-inventor! Over the years, mom and I have faced and overcome a lot of life's challenges together and I can't think of any better partner for this entrepreneurial journey.
We both knew it would be fun and challenging to work on inventing and launching our own brand of products together and see what happens when we actively pursue our dreams and transform them into reality!

Risks and challenges
The principal creator, David Shaw, has been a professional industrial design consultant since the early 1990s and has helped numerous entrepreneurs, startups, and multinational corporations develop new products through his award-winning consulting practice, Metaform Product Development.
All manufacturing partners chosen for this campaign are highly experienced and established factories with components and packaging sourced from both USA and Asia based suppliers.
LUMINNO GlowaSwitch is production-ready. Working prototypes have been installed and used in the creator's own home for several years. In order to perfect both the glow performance and appearance of the specially formulated photoluminescent material, it was necessary to invest in prototype injection mold tooling. Having performed this necessary exercise and troubleshot the process, we are confident we will be able to produce products of consistent quality in volume.
LUMINNO GlowaSwitch was designed with tried-and-true manufacturing processes like plastic injection molding and die cutting in mind so the risk is relatively low in terms of feasibility. However, there will always be some risk due to unforeseen circumstances that may occur in the supply chain. We are limiting initial quantities for Early Bird backers and using a different estimated delivery date for subsequent reward tiers to set what we believe to be safe and realistic expectations for ramp up and scaling.
Because we've done our preparation, any problems would most likely not be technical in nature but demand forecast, supply chain, or logistics related. Other than preparing and processing the custom formulated glow material, there are no new or especially difficult manufacturing processes employed. There are no moving parts or complicated assemblies. We have purposely designed the product for ease of manufacture and efficiency of parts so we believe we'll be able to fulfill the rewards as stated barring any unexpected surprises.
