What makes a good leader?
Is it their dominating presence? The way they have an answer for every situation? Or could it be the massive tribe of followers they have on instagram?
We believe it’s none of those things.
One evening as we sat down to talk about an unrelated project of J.R.’s, an idea emerged organically from the conversation. One of those ideas that neither of us could shake.
What if we combined J.R.'s driving passion for and research on questions, with Michael’s design skills and curiosity — to create a book that was engaging mentally and visually?
The result we’ve come up with is this book, Why Ask Questions? It’s a small book on the importance of asking great questions. The format is compact and visual to help readers engage with the content in a multi-sensory manner.
We’ve identified that the best leaders ask some of the greatest questions. The kinds of questions that inspire us. The kind that grab us around the throat and won’t let go. That push us to new ways of thinking… and feeling… and being.
What would have to happen for you to be accused of being someone who asks great questions? Who do you know who asks great questions? What is the best question you’ve been asked this month? Should you thank that person who asked you?
How you can help
The content for the book is almost done and the layout is underway. Having successfully self-published a book through kickstarter in the past, I know the risks involved. I’m confident that this book will be high-quality in both it’s format and it’s content. We plan to have the book in your hands by late summer/early fall.
We’re looking for partners to join us in the pursuit of asking better questions. The book is a quick read packed with valuable insight; hopefully you’ll find it so valuable you’ll want to give a copy to all the leaders in your life. We need your help to reach our campaign goal to make this book a reality.
Would you consider helping us by backing at any level? Even the smallest contribution helps get us closer to putting this book out into the world.

The book is a 5x7" small book packed with meaningful information and thought provoking imagery. In these 100 pages we hope that you leave changed and provoked to become a better asker than answerer.
A pack of five 4x6" postcards that are intended to be mailed to curious people like you. Or keep them as reminders at your desk, on your fridge, or bathroom mirror.
A choice of one of three 8x10" art prints (frame not included). These are perfect for your office wall to be reminders about the power of questions.
Included in every backer level, these phone wallpapers will serve as a constant reminder that questions matter!

Michael E. Smith | mesmithdesign.com
Michael Smith is always the first one on the dance floor. That may seem like an insignificant detail to some, but that boldness is the energy that drives him in everything he does.
Currently, he's the Brand Design Team Lead at AWeber, where he leads a team of brand designers to create exceptional experiences for their customers and pre-customers. Since joining AWeber in 2013, Michael has led the charge to reimagine both the brand's vision and visuals. He’s contributed to the blog, spoken at conferences, and has helped the team to think abstractly in an effort to produce more creative work.
When his energy isn't directed at solving his team’s needs, he coaches students through Seth Godin’s altMBA program, blogs about being a dad and designer, has self-published a children's book, and writes a weekly email about leadership and design.
