MESA is a portable, indoor/outdoor light whose revolutionary form factor makes it perfect for outdoor parties, camping, or projects at home.
I'm Ravi Varma, an industrial designer the creator of Mesa. I set out to create the ultimate portable light for my backyard in Brooklyn. Hanging around campsites and picnic tables with friends, I realized that portable lanterns were getting in the way. Outdoor lanterns are modeled on old, bulky gas lanterns that fail to take advantage of modern LED and battery technology. They also shine light in all directions, creating uncomfortable glare and reducing visibility. Lastly, to cut costs producers use harsh, blue LEDs that feel cold and unnatural. After 2 years and dozens of prototypes, MESA was born as the perfect portable light.
The MESA looks unlike any other light because it is. MESA’s unique shape is the result of meticulous and thoughtful design.
Tall Enough To Work Under, Short Enough To See Over
MESA’s shape and fold-out legs leave room for hands, maps, beer, or projects underneath while allowing you to see over it. Because MESA doesn’t block your view it’s perfect for your rooftop, campsite, or workshop.
Warm, Natural Light Without Glare
MESA shines down and bounces light off your surface, illuminating the surrounding area without glare. The long light strip has space for 40 LEDs. These help eliminate shadows and provide even, diffuse lighting along the entire length. MESA’s LEDs are designed for architectural lighting and provide warmth and natural color.
MESA’s body is milled from a single piece of aircraft grade aluminum. The seamless design is watertight and dust resistant to military standards (IPX5). The non-corrosive, anodized finish will hold up for years against whatever you or the elements throw at it.
PACKS & UNPACKS FAST: MESA folds out of the included case in seconds.
PACKS EASILY: The legs pop out and fold easily to pack.
FITS ANYWHERE : MESA’s slim profile and low weight make it easy to fit in a bag, bring camping, or store in your workshop drawer.
Risks and challenges
As a designer and product developer for the past 10 years, I know there can be a lot of challenges bringing a product to life. I have been working hard with vendors and production engineers to finalize the design and make MESA a quality product to last for years. I’m also working with an experienced logistics partner that has helped deliver many crowdfunded projects worldwide. Manufacturing a new product can always have surprises that can lead to production delays. As we enter the manufacturing phase we'll keep you posted with regular updates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
