Mermaids of Earth is the World's first book on the many mermaid statues and sculptures found all over Planet Earth.
Why is there mermaid art across cultures all over the World?
There are well over 160 mermaid statues and sculptures available to the public all over the world, spanning centuries and continents of fabulous artwork in bronze, granite, marble, concrete and other materials. These are mostly public works of art, but in some cases they are privately commissioned pieces that are displayed where anyone can see them.
You may have heard of the famous statue in Copenhagen of "The Little Mermaid". She has been there for more than 100 years, and most visitors to Copenhagen pay her a visit. She is an icon of Copenhagen and of Denmark.
But you may not know that both Helsinki (the capital of Finland) and Warsaw (capital of Poland) also have mermaid statues that are famous and play a key role for their cities. Or that there are mermaid statues in China, South Korea, Thailand, Japan, Russia, Lithuania, all over mainland Europe, New Zealand, England, all over the United States, in Canada, Mexico and South America and many other places.
Why This Is Important
Until recently there was no record of this anywhere. It was simply not known how much of this mermaid sculpture art is out there. So I researched and located the mermaid statues, and created the website called Mermaids of Earth.
And I set out to publish a book, making this art known to many more in high quality print. The book is finished and ready to go to print - it's a large coffee-table style book with many fantastic photos of these mermaids, along with historical or background information on most of them.
I have interviewed artists and sponsors, and talked to many people who have lent their support with photos, information and history about the mermaid statues. The amount of help, support, enthusiasm and assistance in this project has been absolutely incredible, and I am moved and grateful for all this enthusiasm, encouragement and support from so many people.
I also found that many of the artists, photographers and others interested in mermaids or performing as mermaids take an active role in ocean conservation efforts, and that much of the art and activities concerning mermaid art and mermaid performances has a strong message of conservation. This makes sense - who could be more concerned than mermaids about ocean pollution, over-fishing and threatened marine species? The mermaids created by human artists have become a symbol for and messengers of ocean conservation efforts, and the book covers this as well.
The book is just under 200 pages in full color, almost all of them with great photos of mermaid statues. It will be 12 x 12" in size, so the photos are large and can be shown at their best. The book also contains a section on the origin and mythology of mermaids, and references to the website pages where more information and the exact location of each statue is found.
Printing this book in this size and in full color is very expensive, unless we get at least 1000 copies printed. With a minimum of 1000 copies the cost then comes down to where we can print and ship the book to our Backers (meaning you) for $25 inside the US.
With your help we can do this, and we would love to have your support in pledging to fund one or several books, which will then be produced and sent to you. The book will be a treasure to anyone who has any interest in mermaids (or in statues or just in great art), whether that is you or someone in your family or friendship circles.
Or you can back this project with one of the other rewards, anywhere from $5 up to $1000.
The book manuscript and layout has just been finished. Printing and getting it ready for fulfillment takes just over 3 months. It could ship to you as early as October of 2017, but to be safe we plan on shipping in December, provided this project is funded.
If you love mermaids ( ... and who doesn't?) make your pledge now and back this project. And spread the word to your friends and relatives who might have an interest in this book, in mermaids or in sculptures and statues.
Where Do the Pledge Funds Go?
100% of pledged funds will go to the first printing of the book with minimum printing of 1000 copies, and to shipping these to our backers, and to the production costs and shipping of the other rewards.
Risks and challenges
Publishing a book is a pretty standardized endeavor, as it clearly has been done many many times before. The research and gathering of photos and information has been in progress for well over 4 years now, and has just been completed. The book is finished, and the layout is done, and we are in the process of final proofreading now.
The only things that might cause a delay are in printing and shipping of the book, but we have multiple options on this and expect no delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
