Merit Clothiers started as a simple idea between two friends (Brittany and Brittany) who met in college and set out into adulthood with a desire to live our lives to the fullest, outside the cubicle.
As former scouts (and children, for that matter), we wondered why people didn't openly celebrate good deeds and achievements like we used to. Therefore, we wanted to design a clothing and accessories line that was both fun to wear and meaningful for the people wearing it.
The inspiration is as varied as we are- from the scout adventures of our childhood to vintage WWI styles with a mix of new colors and eco-friendly materials. The apparel is made in Chicago, IL with organic cotton fabrics and non-toxic dyes.
Our merit badges are hand-stitched by an independent fabric artist using 100% wool felt. Each badge denotes a certain achievement completed by the wearer- just like any scout would.
We design and create our items with a few guiding principles:
1. People should be proud of the great things they accomplish everyday
2. Inspiring others to do good deeds makes for a better world
3. We all deserve clothing that is beneficial to the economy and the environment
With this kickstarter campaign, you can"pre-order" your standard issue jacket, messenger bag and merit badges. With an apparel purchase you can choose the color/lining you like best. Once you pay through Kickstarter, we'll follow up with you on the colors and sizes you prefer.
The "standard issue" jackets are also available for pre-order in these additional colors (to avocado green above) with lining:
The "standard issue" messenger bags are also available for pre-order in these colors with lining:
We need to reach our $5,000 goal in order to cover the first run of apparel manufacturing in Chicago, IL.
Once we reach our goal, we'll follow up with an order form for you to specify badges, sizes, colors, etc.
If you love what you see, take this opportunity to buy apparel and accessories that are good for the environment and the economy. Support small business!

Risks and challenges
Our goal for a formal launch for our clothing line is August of 2013. However, with the success of this kickstarter campaign there are still details that any new business would have to iron out (pun intended).
We are most focused on being able to coordinate the purchase of all apparel necessities (such as care/garment tags, shipping necessities and postage, etc) while still leaving enough time to manufacture, perform a thorough quality control check and still provide purchases to you long before we offer the items at a retail price to the public.
For those that pre-order items, we will do our very best to deliver your purchases with high quality and in a timely manner. If for some reason we hit any unforeseen circumstances, we will be diligent in reaching out to our customers via email and communicating any issues along with exactlly how we will be moving forward with production, and our best estimate as to when you can expect your items.
We value the trust you put into us when pre-ordering from our line. Making a good impression on (first) customers is key to growing our business, and that's exactly what we're aiming for.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
