MercWorks is a comic I started as a silly little labor of love in 2011 that’s grown beyond my wildest expectations over the years - so much so that I’m dumbfounded to be releasing my second book. It’s published twice weekly on mercworks.net and most recently on webtoons.com as well.
The Cure for the Human Condition is a collection of the past two years of MercWorks comics in one seriously beautiful book perfect for your coffee table, bathroom, or as a last-resort weapon if that ornery pizza delivery guy finally snaps. This includes the main MercWorks comic, the Pyramid Man spinoff story, most of the webtoons stuff* and a whole bunch of minicomics and exclusive comics that previously only Patrons had access to!
*The webtoons comics are only available in physical copies of the book due to licensing agreements. Sorry digital people!
The book is 7x9.5” and should clock in around 160 pages (I’m still adding comics throughout the Kickstarter campaign). If you’re interested in the seriously nitty gritty, the inside paper is going to be 105lb matte, there’s gonna be print on the inside covers, spot UV on the cover, and I’ve specifically asked the printers that it be made with extra love.
The most versatile type of print. A postcard can be put in a frame and hung on the wall, used as kindling in a life-or-death camping situation, or sent to a friend through the post. There are probably other uses too! The only limit is your imagination. And the law.
If you can’t afford to get the book itself but you’d really like to get your hands on some hot MercWorks swag this is the way to go. Anybody who pledges $10 will get 3 postcards at random! Maybe you’ve got your eye on that one crazy turtle and you wanna make sure you don’t miss out? Just add $5 to your order for all 7!
The Happiness Edition! Your book will be signed and have a custom doodle inside!
The Unending Joy Edition! Your book will be signed, have a custom doodle inside, and I’ll write you a personal message based on whatever information you want to provide! Maybe you want to hear about what a good person you are? Or a little poem about your cubicle? Haha, just kidding. Too sad.
The Happiness Edition with Special Thanks! Get everything from the Happiness Edition PLUS get your name forever emblazoned in the special thanks section of the book! Add $15 to upgrade to the Unending Joy Special Thanks Edition!
The INFINITE KARMA Edition! This one is reserved for the top tiers because it’s a doozy. It includes everything from the Unending Joy Special Thanks Edition PLUS I’ll draw in and write super fun stuff throughout the book. You’ll get personalized dumb jokes, so many doodles, and a whole bunch of other fun stuff!
Add $25 to any reward to get the first book as well! (See bottom for some more information on why you might want this even if you already have the first book)
You’ll star in your very own two-panel minicomic! It will be published online along with a link to your instagram, twitter, website, or whatever (if you want).
Give me some information about yourself and, like magic, I’ll make it seem funny! Probably.
Add $10 to get a print of your minicomic along with the book!
You know that awesome comic idea you want to pitch, but you're afraid I'll quietly take it in, nodding, and let out a friendly but unpromising "maybe!" when you're done? Well turn that "maybe" into a "yes!" with the genius reward.
That's right, I'll illustrate your awesome comic idea! It can be up to four panels long and it doesn't even have to be funny. Not sure your idea is all there yet? We can workshop it!
If you want, it will be published online along with a link to your instagram, twitter, website, or whatever. (This doesn't have to be published online if you prefer to keep it private or publish it yourself)
Add $10 to get a print of your genius comic along with the book!
You’re at home, watching the star-studded cast of MercWorks exchange witticisms and set out on adventures in far-off lands and you’re thinking to yourself, “why couldn’t that be me?” Well, with your very own cameo comic it can be. You’ll give me some information about yourself and I’ll write you a guest spot in the comic!
If you’re feeling like a big spender, you could even be a permanent member of the cast!
It will be published online along with a link to your instagram, twitter, imdb page, or whatever.

The Joy of Despair
I learned a lot from putting together the first book, The Joy of Despair, and here’s the quick rundown of what I’m doing differently:
- I hired a designer (David Wong) for layouts because I am not a designer. It looks really nice.
- The physical dimensions are smaller than JoD, clocking in at 7x9.5”
- I’m using a printer who specializes in comics
If we hit $30,000, anyone who orders the first book through this campaign will get a completely reformatted edition of the first book which will fit perfectly next to The Cure for the Human Condition on your bookshelf. Just add $25 to any order to get a copy of The Joy of Despair.
The new Joy of Despair will even include some comics that were left out of the first book and a totally new cover illustration! Of course if we don’t reach this special stretch goal you’ll still get the original Joy of Despair, so it’s a win-win!
Risks and challenges
Fortunately the book is already laid out and looking good. Right now it's around 80%. I'll be finishing things up as we get closer to the end of the campaign and hope to have it ready to print within two weeks of the final day.
Shipping, signing, and drawing all this stuff is going to be really time-consuming, an important lesson I learned in the aftermath of the first Kickstarter. I'm prepared for that and have really reasonable timelines for getting everything done so I believe everything will get to backers according to schedule. More than anything I'm going to work hard to ensure that books are out before Christmas for everyone.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
