Mercer Watch Co. is a small designer and producer of timepieces located in historic central New Jersey, USA. We strive to design and produce custom mechanical timepieces of the utmost quality for an affordable price. We have teamed up with some of the best names in the industry and sourced parts from all over the world to make that happen.
This will be Mercer Watch Co's second watch funded via Kickstarter. Our first was an automatic timepiece called the Brigadier. 458 backers helped us raise over $122,000 to bring the Brigadier to life. We are happy to report that it was produced and delivered to backers a full two months early.
The inspiration for the Wayfarer came from our love of travel. We've traveled all over the world and have loved every second of it. Unfortunately, sometimes our timepieces have not been up to the task.
The Wayfarer is a GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) watch. This means that it can track time in two timezones, independently set by the wearer. If you're traveling from New York to London, you can set both time zones independently and not have to re-set your watch when you leave and when you come back home. This is accomplished via a second hour hand (in orange below) that completes a revolution around the dial once every 24 hours.
Unfortunately, mechanical GMT watches are usually fairly expensive, and this got us thinking - why can't we make a mechanical GMT watch that attractive, reliable and affordable? The result of our work is the Wayfarer.
The Wayfarer was designed from the ground up to be a comfortable size, yet not overbearingly large. We designed and manufactured a custom case made from 316L stainless steel. This low-carbon ‘surgical steel’ is resistant to both pitting and corrosion, and is the same alloy used by the worlds best watch manufacturers. The case is rated at 10 ATM water resistance, meaning you can wear it while doing the dishes or for a quick dip, but you should avoid diving or other water intensive activities.
Curved polished surfaces make the watch wear smaller than it is, and the wire lugs are a change of pace from the norm.
Here is a spec list for the Wayfarer:
- Case size: 41mm 316L stainless steel
- Thickness: 11mm
- Lug width: 22mm
- Lug to lug: 48mm
- Crown: signed gasketed screw down crown
- Movement: Hangzhou 6460 automatic GMT movement
- Crystal: domed sapphire (stretch goal adds anti-reflective treatment)
- Dial: two-piece with Superluminova BGW9 and applied logo
- Strap: 22mm wide Cordura nylon with Lorica lining and signed polished buckle
- Water resistance: 100 meters
- Warranty: 12 months
The Wayfarer will be produced in the blue/orange and grey/blue color schemes initially, with the potential for a third variant (black/red) as a stretch goal.
While the Hangzhou 6460 is not a well known movement, its the perfect movement for us to use in this situation. Its a robust mechanical movement with the exact same specifications as the ETA2836-2 with the addition of a GMT module. A comparable ETA mechanical GMT movement would increase the price of the Wayfarer significantly.
We have contracted production of this movement directly from the manufacturer, and are confident in both its usefulness and reliability.
For our first stretch goal we will upgrade all sapphire crystals with multilayer anti-reflective treatment. This will reduce glare and give the dial a bit more pop.
Our second stretch goal will be to add a new dial color to the available option. Once we reach $55,000 you will be able to select the black dial with red accent, as seen here.
If the campaign reaches the $95,000 mark we will provide both black and blue straps with your Wayfarer. These straps are Cordura nylon with a Lorica lining and are extremely comfortable and durable.
Watch boxes are useless. Your everyday, run of the mill watch box is huge, and serves no purpose after you get it home. Therefore, every Wayfarer will come shipped in a custom, zipper-closure leather travel case. Its reusable, stylish and guaranteed to take great care of your watch.
The watches we are showing you in this campaign are prototypes. Prototypes are 'trial' versions, and there are always small changes that will be made based on these versions. In the case of the Wayfarer, those changes will be made to the dials. We will make the outer ring of the dial and corresponding text larger to improve spacing. We will also move the text for the 24 hour ring and make it larger to improve readability. In turn, the GMT hand will be made slightly shorter. The renderings below detail the changes we are making to the dials.
Risks and challenges
Our risks and challenges are the same as others with product-based Kickstarter campaigns - namely, production delays. We do not anticipate delays beyond our timeline above, but there are no guarantees in life and so it is possible that something unanticipated could occur during production.
If something were to happen, rest assured that we would keep our Kickstarter community appraised of the situation.
