Mercer Watch Co. is a small designer and producer of timepieces located in historic central New Jersey, USA. We strive to design and produce custom mechanical timepieces of the utmost quality for an affordable price. Our website and available watches can be seen at www.mercerwatch.com.
We have previously run two successful campaigns on Kickstarter. These campaigns have allowed us to produce our first two models - the Brigadier (seen above) and the Wayfarer - both of which we delivered to customers on schedule or before. They've also given us the opportunity to add more models to the lineup - which is why you're reading this today.
Our backers have played a large role in our success thus far - and now we're asking for you're support once again. To date we have prepared designs, made case molds and built prototypes. The next step is large scale production for sale and distribution - and for that we need your help.
In this campaign we are looking for supporters to help fund the production of TWO watch models, not just one. These two watches, seen below, are called the PRIVATEER and the VOYAGER. Each have their own individual inspiration and specifications, but both were born out of passion for clean design and a love for the ocean.
The Privateer and the Voyager are custom pieces - made to our specs from the ground up. Schematics led to renderings, which led to 3D models, case molds and prototypes. From there we perfected the dials and chose the straps. Care was taken to make the final product as impressive as the early renderings, which you can see below.
Both designs are manufactured from 316L stainless steel. This low-carbon ‘surgical steel’ is resistant to both pitting and corrosion, and is the same alloy used by the worlds best watch manufacturers. They are also equipped with sapphire crystals, which are extremely scratch resistant and do not distort your view of the dial.
We utilize Japanese made (Citizen-Miyota) automatic movements in these watches for two reasons. 1. they are extremely reliable and durable movements that have been used for years by many manufacturers and 2. they help us to keep the price at a reasonable level when compared to comparable Swiss automatic movements made by ETA and the like. These movements are also easier to get our hands on when compared to Swiss, which helps us stick to timelines.
The Privateer is our take on the traditional marine chronometer-inspired watch. It is designed in the style of an instrument that has helped mariners keep time and navigate the globe since the 1800s. Its dial comes in either blue or white and is easy to read, similar to the instruments it is based on.
Highlights include a 42mm case with a circular patterned dial, exhibition case back, custom steel hands in flame blue or silver and a padded calf skin strap. Full specifications can be seen below.
The Voyager is a contemporary diving watch. As such, it is water resistant up to a depth of 300 meters (1000 feet), meaning it is as useful while taking pictures of Flipper as it is while watching it on TV. It will come in three colorways, each available with either black rubber or stainless steel straps.
The Voyager sports a 42mm polished case, and includes a wave patterned dial, unidirectional rotating bezel, luminous indices and a punched case back along with either rubber or steel strap.
*Note that the hands of the Voyager will be slightly larger on the final production models.
The Privateer is available in either white or blue dial configurations and the Voyager is available in either black or white dial - the white dial having two bezel color choices. The following image summarizes the color combinations that are available through this Kickstarter. Choices will be made via survey at the conclusion of the campaign. Additional straps, etc may be purchased after the campaign during the survey process.
For some time now we have shipped our watches in travel watch cases. We like the fact that you can actually use the case when you travel, instead of sticking it in a closet. Our clients have agreed thus far, and we think you will too.
Assuming everything goes according to plan, the watches will be in your hands no later than JAN/FEB, depending on when and where your order ships. Our survey process affords you the opportunity to choose your model(s) and add any additional straps or accessories to your order. It's also imperative for capturing your address information to ensure accurate shipment.
Thanks for looking - we hope we've won you over as a supporter. If you have any questions we're quite active on the site and respond to posts and questions as soon as possible, so feel free to get in touch.
Risks and challenges
Our risks and challenges are the same as others with product-based Kickstarter campaigns - namely, production delays. We do not anticipate delays beyond our timeline above, but there are no guarantees in life and so it is possible that something unanticipated could occur during production.
If something were to happen, rest assured that we would keep our Kickstarter community aware of the situation.
