Mercer Watch Co. is a small designer and producer of time pieces located in historic central New Jersey, USA. We strive to design and produce custom mechanical time pieces of the utmost quality for an affordable price. We have teamed up with some of the best names in the industry and sourced parts from all over the world to make that happen.
Princeton, NJ and its surrounding area was once at the epicenter of the American Revolution. Washington's crossing of the Delaware in 1776 led to the battles of Trenton and Princeton and signaled the turning point of the war.
Being history buffs, we decided to name both the company and our first offering after Brigadier General Hugh Mercer - a key player in the battles of Trenton and Princeton. He was a doctor, a soldier and an accomplished leader. While they didn't wear wristwatches in the late 1700s, the mechanical technology powering the watches we design has not changed much since the pocket watches of that time.
The Brigadier is a stylish automatic timepiece that embodies the mission of the Mercer Watch Co. No gimmicks, no gadgetry - just classic American design at a great price.
The Brigadier has been featured on the following websites:
While many small watch companies use generic or stock watch cases, we decided to go another way. We designed and manufactured a custom case made from 316L stainless steel. This low-carbon ‘surgical steel’ is resistant to both pitting and corrosion, and is the same alloy used by the worlds best watch manufacturers. The case is rated at 10 ATM water resistance, meaning you can wear it while doing the dishes or for a quick dip, but you should avoid diving or other water intensive activities, especially considering the leather band.
The dimensions of the watch are enough to give it wrist presence, but not so large that it won't fit under your cuff. The leather strap is 22mm wide and 3mm thick. Take note of the polished and brushed surfaces of the Brigadier, an elegant detail adding to its classy appearance.
Details like a debossed crown and a case back precision engraved with our "Revolutionary Soldier" design will definitely grab your attention.
While a mineral glass or plexi glass crystal would do the job, the Brigadier is constructed with a more expensive sapphire crystal for better scratch resistance. Moreover, the inside of the domed front crystal has an anti-reflective treatment, making the gently guilloched dial easy to read, even in difficult lighting. The dial is made of brass and is enameled for a matte finish. Applied stainless steel hour markers and numerals add depth. The dauphine hands, indices and rehaut are lumed with superluminova C3.
The straps we have specified for the Brigadier are velvety soft 22mm wide suede. We've decided to use curved spring bars to give the straps a nice integrated look as they meet the case.
The Brigadier is powered by one of the most reliable movements available today – the Miyota 9015. The 9015 includes a date window and beats at 28,800 vph, resulting in a very smooth sweep of the second hand. It is also shock resistant and hacking, making it one of the best values on the market. Best of all - no battery needed.
Watch boxes are useless. Your everyday, run of the mill watch box is huge, and serves no purpose after you get it home. We think we can do better. Therefore, every Brigadier will come shipped in a custom, zipper-closure leather travel case. Its reusable, stylish and guaranteed to take great care of your watch.
As of the start of this campaign we have produced designs, renderings and prototypes of both watches and packaging. Molds have also been created to produce Brigadier cases in bulk. The funds from this Kickstarter campaign will allow us to place orders with our manufacturing partners and begin mass production of the Brigadier and its associated packaging, as well as pay for shipping, warranty cards, etc.
With your help we believe we can reach our goal and realize our dream of providing watch lovers with a fantastic automatic watch at a fantastic price.
For our first stretch goal we will offering to upgrade case backs to exhibition case backs for all backers at no charge. You will be able to purchase the original engraved case back if you choose at the end of the campaign.
Our second stretch goal will be to decorate the rotors of the Miyota 9015. This is a little more labor intensive as the movements need to be disassembled, decorated, reassembled and regulated, but this will go hand in hand with our display case back so it makes a great addition.
For our third and final stretch goal we listened to our backers. The majority wanted more strap options, so if this campaign raises $100,000 we will be including both brown and black straps with each watch.
Risks and challenges
Our risks and challenges are the same as others with product-based Kickstarter campaigns - namely, production delays. We do not anticipate delays beyond our timeline above, but there are no guarantees in life and so it is possible that something unanticipated could occur during production.
If something were to happen, rest assured that we would keep our Kickstarter community appraised of the situation.
