New Goal: $17.5K
Thanks to the overwhelming support (from both sides of the Atlantic!) we've reached our goal early! We've set our new goal at $17.5K, this new goal allows us to make some critical investments in our Lighting, Sound, and Art Departments which will greatly improve the quality of the film (see below for details).
We’re working with the fresh-off-the-press Blackmagic Cinema Camera, and this camera is very thirsty for light! For the one week of night-shooting we have for MENTHOL, we need to be able to see! A basic lighting kit will go a long way, providing ambient moonlight along the lonesome backroads of Ojai, CA.
Sound more than half of the moviegoing experience, and for this we must have rigorous quality control. We have four main actors that will require wireless microphones for most scenes, as we will be shooting many wide shots that put the characters in their environments. Sound is currently where most of our budget is allocated to, and it’s still barebones. Help this movie sound the best it can.
Our production design is minimal, but we have 2 set pieces (difficult to shoot yet integral scenes to the story) that require props & objects to be used across multiple takes.
It's such a privilege to be able to make a film -- I see this as a once in a lifetime chance, a rare opportunity to explore this whole predicament of being alive. We've slept on couches, lived in tents, spent a lot of time in the backseat of cars, collecting jokes & dramas & moments over the course of 3 years to bring this 24-hour story alive. Nothing is cut & dry, nothing is simple -- nothing is more interesting than real life, and this is a story where everything must be told in the minutia, the small gestures, the words beneath the words.
The challenge is to create a film that reflects everyday life in a way that people can connect to without imposing plot arcs and spectacle. We spent a year casting our film, finding the young actors that will bring the right qualities to the characters. We've brought together a great cast from all over the country, a dedicated team of filmmakers, and with your support, we can make this happen!

Where Your Money Goes:
From the get-go we've planned on making this movie whether it was with a Cadillac budget or the used '88 Corolla package -- in other words, we've planned to be flexible. Every dollar you donate gets another hot meal to our crew, gas money for our hobo director, and maybe even some compensation for our tireless cast & crew! Reaching our kickstarter goal ensures we reach critical mass and make this project a reality.

- Sound Department (The most important thing, seriously)
- Camera Department expenses (Support gear, Lens rentals)
- Grip Department (Tape, Sandbags, C-Stands, Nets, Flags)
- Electric Department (Lighting, Practical Bulbs, Dimmers)
- Hard Drives (The camera & format we are shooting with offers great quality at the cost of huge data rates, we need several memory outlets for storing and backing up our RAW footage)

Risks and challenges
Making a film is a complex undertaking with a lot of moving parts and a limited window of time to get it right. These are the major challenges we're facing and the steps we've taken to manage the risks.
1) Casting, casting, casting: as mentioned before this project rests on the talent and chemistry of our core cast, that's why we've held countless casting sessions over the last year in order to pull together a deeply committed and incredibly talented group of individuals from both Coasts and the Midwest. 2) Weather: obviously, this one is mostly out of our control, but we have chosen one of the driest locations in California for our shoot. 3) Scheduling: our shooting schedule has already been hammered out by our Executive Producer, Steve, who has extensive industry experience doing this (Princess Bride, Stand By Me, Boyz N The Hood, School of Rock, etc.). Additionally, as can be seen in our preliminary budget above, the Assistant Director (the person who keeps a handle on the logistical half of the shoot, and our frontline of defense in ensuring a smooth shoot), is our highest paid position. 4) Production design: the movie's based on stories and characters local to Ojai, and takes place in actual Ojai locales. Filming locally gives the project authenticity with the added bonus of taking care of a majority of the 'world creation,' or production design. 5) Maintaining a professional crew: three weeks is a big time commitment, that's why we've brought together a team that believes very deeply in the project and why we've taken care to set aside some compensation for our full time crew in the budget.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
