About this project
In May 2007, grilled cheese sandwiches in Los Angeles were taken to a new level with the inception of meltDOWN etc. This quick-serve concept restaurant opened its doors to the public in Culver City, California, to lines of fans every day of the week. meltDOWN etc., the original grilled cheese concept, was created by myself, Ryan Afromsky, with numerous types of grilled cheese sandwiches, including homemade soups and even dessert sandwiches.
meltDOWN etc., the home of the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich, opened to much fanfare and quickly became a hit in the community and word of this one-of-a-kind establishment created fans throughout all of Los Angeles County. meltDOWN etc. has been featured in a number of local and national print magazines and newspapers, and radio stations, and local and national television shows. Plans of opening more locations quickly sprung up and the future of meltDOWN etc. was looking good for this newly created concept.
Fast forward to March of 2009, less than two years later, when meltDOWN etc. was forced to close its doors amidst what was referred to as the “perfect storm.” With the local and national economy in a state of turmoil, a lingering hangover from the writer’s strike, a lease coming to an end with a landlord who wanted to flood the business with increasing rental and overhead costs, along with a refurbished city (Culver City) that grew so quickly, it decided to raise all fees and taxes to exorbitant levels. As a result of this unforeseen closure, the friendly staff and loyal customers felt terrible and wanted to know if and when meltDOWN etc. would ever return.
Present day finds rumblings of meltDOWN etc.’s rumored comeback. As we all know, Hollywood loves a comeback and fans of meltDOWN etc. would love nothing more than to see their favorite grilled cheese return. Since it left its nook in Culver City, meltDOWN etc. fans still inquire about the return of this gooey finger food that children and adults love. A fairly new food truck company called MobiMunch is penetrating the mobile cuisine market in Southern California and has reached out to meltDOWN etc. to be the next facilitator its trucks. meltDOWN etc. misses its customers and its customers miss meltDOWN etc and this would be the perfect platform for diners to have their cheesy fix once again. It would be housed in a new truck with grilled cheese favorites from the old menu, homemade tomato soup and some of its old friendly faces. Some of those sandwiches include our Classic 3 Cheese with Sharp Cheddar, Muenster and Fontina on fresh Sourdough (add Thick Cut Applewood Smoked Bacon, Smoked Ham and/or Vine Ripened Tomatoes) and our Cheddar Ham & Apple with Sharp Cheddar, Smoked Ham and Apple Butter on fresh Sourdough.
The money we are raising will go towards our basic start up costs. These include our truck security deposit, first month's rent, painting (or wrapping in the truck world) of our truck, some training, articles of organization for the state of California, and some working capital. Once this takes place, meltDOWN etc. will be ready to opens its doors once again and serve those famous grilled cheeses.
