IMPORTANT UPDATE 30/05/16
PLEASE NOTE: Only wooden necklaces (3mm thick birchwood on silver plated chains) are available as rewards currently (they're limited edition and won't be available for purchase once the campaign ends) - this has been the case the entire time of the campaign. The acrylic necklaces will be available for purchase in the future when I build the final collection. The images of the acrylic pieces are samples of what I will be creating in the future, and my ultimate business goals. Images of completed wooden necklaces can be seen within the campaign. Any questions please ask :) PLEASE READ UPDATE 4 FOR FURTHER DETAILS.
NEW STRETCH GOALS ADDED:
I'm ecstatic that I've hit my target, so I've added some new stretch goals to help with further funding of my collection and to help me retail it faster. ALL backers (current and future) will receive the following if I hit these next targets:
£800 - an extra postcard print of mine, blank and packaged for your use.
£900 - an extra postcard print of mine, blank + a handmade unique mini zine.
£1000 - an extra postcard print, blank + a handmade unique mini zine + an extra blank greeting card and envelope with my print.
My name is Melody, I’m a 23 year old artist living and working in London. Over the last year I have been working on creating my own line of handmade jewellery using my original artwork and print designs. I want to make my art more accessible and versatile; my goal is to combine my love of printmaking and fashion to bring you wearable artworks in the form of affordable jewellery and accessories. With your support in this campaign I can complete my first full collection and bring it to the marketplace.
I graduated from Winchester School of Art in 2013 with a degree in Fine Art Painting, and since then I've been developing my work and exploring digital collage and printmaking. Up until now my prints had only been displayed on paper or screens, and I wanted a more exciting and tactile way to share them. Buying prints doesn't appeal to everyone and isn't always affordable, so I also wanted to find a way to make my art more accessible – as well as more unique.
I've always been extremely interested in fashion (I run a fashion blog at http://www.melodyg.co.uk/) so came up with the idea of combining my two main loves of fashion and art to create something that was affordable but still visually exciting. By making the artwork wearable, I hope to open it up to a wider audience and create something that can be appreciated in a different way to traditional hanging artworks and can also be more fairly priced. I felt like this was the perfect way to work with two things I truly love, and get to share my artwork with a different audience.
After having explored tons of different materials and looking at the best way to create my product, I finally settled on high quality acrylic and locally sourced birchwood. These materials allow me to keep the pieces affordable, yet still very high quality. I am currently working on keeping each item under £20, so that they can be available to anyone.
I experimented with all the printing services I could find to make sure that my products were made to the highest possible quality. I use direct ink printing on my products where the ink is layered directly onto the materials, ensuring premium transfer and long-lasting pieces.
Initially I've been creating necklaces, simple stud earrings and brooches, as these are versatile, affordable, and popular. Although my current focus is jewellery, I plan to expand these collections over the next few years, and incorporate further products such as bags, homeware, and other accessories.
PLEASE NOTE: Only wooden necklaces will be available as rewards currently, acrylic necklaces will be available in the future.
As mentioned above, I live and work in London, and everything from the design to the final product is made by me (with the advice and expertise of wonderful family and friends!). I create the digital images for the print and the designs for the vector files which are then used for laser-cutting. The pieces are physically printed and laser-cut at my suppliers; I then add the fixings by hand and package each piece to sell. This is all done in my studio in London, and where possible I use local suppliers.
After the campaign has finished and I launch a full collection, 5% of all future profits I make will go directly to the charity Living Goods. I am incredibly lucky to have the resources to work towards creating my own business and to live in a community where I have constant access to health and medical support. By buying my pieces you will be supporting women in Uganda and Kenya by helping provide them with entrepreneurial skills to build businesses which they can use to sell life-saving medical supplies. This makes a huge difference within the local communities and provides much-needed healthcare to tons of poverty-ridden areas. Not only does this improve community health through access to much-needed supplies and advice, but it also provides business women with a chance to make a living.

I am asking for your kind support in my Kickstarter campaign so that I can finish completing a full collection, and begin retailing my products.
By pledging you’ll be helping me turn this idea into a reality. It’s something I’ve been incredibly passionate about for a long time, and I can't wait to see it finally gaining momentum.
Choose from one of the rewards below. You’ll be able to receive unique wooden necklaces that are a limited collection and won’t be available for purchase in the future – and you’ll help give my project the kick-start it needs. They'll also be offered at special Kickstarter reduced prices. Acrylic jewellery will be available for purchase once the campaign has been completed.
You can also receive one of my art prints - A4 prints on 300 gsm paper with the edition number and my signature on the back. All rewards will come with a postcard with one of my prints on, and a handwritten thank you note for being so generous and backing my campaign (all selections will be random).
I’ve put thought and love into every image, every design, every chain, every material, and even the size of every single fixing hole – you can see how much I care about my pieces! I may be a one-woman operation, but I’m VERY determined and hardworking – and want to watch this business thrive while I work hard on developing it further.
I am so grateful that you've visited my page and read my pitch, and can't thank you enough for any donations - no matter the size. Every penny will truly help me turn my idea into a growing, functioning reality. I'm incredibly passionate about this project and business, and hope with your help that I can build it and help it grow into something exciting. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or just for a chat, I would love to hear from you!
When will my order ship?
Many of the rewards above are available now – as soon as the campaign is over I will do my best to ship them all as soon as possible. Remember I’m just one girl ☺ You should expect delivery within 3-4 weeks following the finish of the campaign. All items except the ‘Full Packages’ will be sent second class Royal Mail. The 'Full Packages' will be sent recorded.
Risks and challenges
I have carefully created a business plan and have thoroughly planned and organised the timeline and cost projection of my business. I will do everything in my power to ensure that the plan is followed and that every penny is used for what it is intended. As with everything, unexpected things can go wrong, but should this occur I will tackle any problems head on and my priority will be in making sure that customers receive the rewards that they purchased.
I am currently still designing collections so future collections may vary slightly including the types of findings used, but the style and quality will always remain the same.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
