Hi I'm Melissa! Combining my love of good stories, mindfulness and books, I have lovingly created these 'emotion coaching' books that inspire and teach both children and adults!
They are designed to help with one of life's most important skills: emotional balance.
As we know, childhood can be an emotional time. The BIG emotions such as anger and sadness can be overwhelming for developing brains. And sometimes, us parents need help with the emotional stuff as well!
My son is a great little guy of course, but his quick eruptions of anger (and sometimes even violence) were the inspiration behind these stories. I wanted a find gentle and fun way to talk about these outbursts with him without the dreaded 'lecture'.
This is where Manny the Meatball comes in. He is a sweet little guy, who goes through the ups and downs of everyday emotions and common thinking patterns.
Manny is joined by his friends Benjamin Broccoli and Crispy Carrot and is often guided by his wise Aunty Sage, who has a lot of experience with the BIG emotions and 'stinking thinking'. Aunty Sage helps him mindfully move through the 'challenging times'. Do you get the picture?
Meet Manny: A nutritionally balanced little ball of goodness...
First and foremost, the books tell great stories that are entertaining for both children and parents.
But then, the stories can be read with the aim of opening discussion and solving everyday problems that we encounter right into adulthood.
Sometimes, instead of direct ‘teaching’ it’s just easier to explore these feelings side by side in a non-confrontational way, via a medium such as a book!
What a bargain- books that entertain and teach!
The emotions and thought patterns that we experience daily are not the problem but sometimes our accompanying behaviours are. Using the ideas from cutting edge behavioural research, along with easy mindfulness tools, I wrote these books.
The two books are dedicated to different emotions & thought patterns: Anger and Growth Mindset. (The third one about Sadness is waiting in the wings...)
The target group is kids aged 3 and above, who love a good story and a good laugh.
They have been illustrated by the clever Shirley Harvey in a captivating yet simple manner, and the characters really come to life through our collaboration and mutual love of these themes.
There are even research-based, parent/caregiver notes at the back of each book to help further explain the tools and offer more ideas for later!
The books have already been printed in the Finnish language and have rolled into many homes across the country! Manny is making his way around the world!
Here is some feedback so far:
"These are really good books and should be found in every library, and on every family's bookcase!"
"These books! Just wonderful! I can not help but recommend them! My darling (but sometimes temperamental) 8 year-old said,'Mum these actually help me with my feelings! I'm an eternal fan of this writer!'"
"I didn't realise that I could learn something new about parenting and emotions from a children's book. It's a win-win situation! We are both learning!"
"Our kids love Manny. Both at our kindergarten and at home!"
The books have been written and illustrated. So, I am raising money here on kickstarter to recoup the illustrator costs and fund the professional layout and publication of these little treasures. I would like to meet the bulk printing minimum order. The budget has also included the packing supplies and kickstarter fees.
I want to share them far and wide!
These days, self-publishing is the fastest way to get ideas out there and I would really love your help with printing these tales about this unlikely meatball hero. He is just too cute and curious to stay cooped up in my ideas box!
What's in it for you?:
- Your contribution to the project will get you the book/s, e-book version, meditations, postcards or all of the above!
- You get a good feeling about funding a heart-centred project meant to make communication and cultivating emotional balance the 'norm' for children and caregivers.
What's in it for me?
- I get to turn my passion project into a reality and have the opportunity to write more stories in my spare time - thank you!
- I help families using my experience with, and research into, emotional balance and coaching.
- I feel good about helping people learn more and talk more about big emotions and how to handle them in a healthy way.
The other exciting aspect of these books is the collaboration and creation of community from around the world. The stories have been written by me, a lover of words and stories; the illustrations have been handcrafted by a creative being in Canada; the layout and design is being done by a clever person who lives in a cabin in a remote Finnish forest; and even the video above has been documented by a cool Aussie living far away from home.
The most important part of this collaboration however is you. I’m hoping that you also feel called to be a part of this creative community project.
You are not just buying a story book, you are buying an idea and great tool for families.

Risks and challenges
The two books have been finished (text and illustrations) and are ready for the printer! Therefore, the risks are low.
I have chosen the delivery date according to initial printing quotes, regarding turn around and shipping to me. Delays in printing and shipping are the biggest risk I can see.
As soon as I receive the books, they will be packed and shipped.
The biggest challenge is the shipping. This is the unavoidably expensive part and I have looked for the safest and quickest way to do this. The books will be shipped from Finland as they are being printed in Europe. This is the part that challenges me most about this project because international shipping is such an expense! I'm just hoping that people understand this.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
