About this project
We invented the Meld Knob + Clip to help you cook the perfect meal every time, whether slow cooking, simmering, sous vide, poaching, frying or even candy making.
The Meld Knob is an automated knob for your existing cooktop, and it wirelessly communicates with a precision temperature sensor that attaches to your cookware. The Meld Clip monitors the temperature of what you’re cooking, and along with our iPhone and Android app, makes automatic adjustments to your gas or electric cooktop to ensure a perfect dish, every time.
Think of it as upgrading the cookware and range you already own helping you cook perfect meals — just like a professional chef — without the cost or years of training.
The Problem We're Solving: What is Medium-High?
Traditional recipes provide instructions like "Cook at medium-high heat for 10-15 minutes until golden brown and tender." What exactly is medium-high? Should you cook it for 10 or 15 minutes? How brown is golden brown? What is tender? Couple these vague directions with the fact that every cooktop is different and every pot is different and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.
Our research showed one simple – but fundamental – issue with successful cooking: it’s nearly impossible to accurately control the temperature of your cookware. Even worse, we found that stoves set to “medium” can vary as much as 100℉ between different cooktops!
The Meld Knob + Clip
The Meld Knob is the key to controlling temperatures. It is a custom-designed replacement for one of your existing cooktop knobs. It automatically turns the burner up or down to keep the food at the perfect temperature. The Meld Knob knows how to adjust the heat based on temperature readings it receives from the Meld Clip. The Meld clip attaches to the cookware you already own.
The Meld Knob is meant to be left on your cooktop. When not being used with the Meld Clip or app you can use it like any other knob.
The Meld App
The Meld app will be available for iOS and Android when the Meld Knob + Clip ships. It monitors and controls the Meld Knob + Clip. While the app contains hundreds of kitchen-perfected recipes that guide the cook from start to finish, you can also add your own so you can easily make grandma's Italian meatballs perfectly every time. Meld recipes are precise and therefore produce perfect results with no guesswork and little effort.
The app also lets you manually control the knob. The difference is that instead of setting the knob to “medium” or “high” you can set the knob to a specific temperature (e.g. 200°F) or to a specific way of cooking (e.g. simmering). So even when you are cooking without a recipe, you will achieve better results with the Meld Knob + Clip.

Looks good in every kitchen: we looked at hundreds of cooktops and tested it in dozens of kitchens to ensure that it looks good on both inexpensive electric cooktops to high-end professional ranges.
Only the best materials: we spared no expense on the materials going into the construction. From using specialized heat and chemical resistant materials, to top of the line coatings, to using only the best thermocouples, we wanted to build a product that could stand up to the rigors of a busy kitchen.
Easy installation: it is easy to install on virtually any cooktop. Each Meld Knob + Clip comes with a set of adapters to ensure it works for your cooktop – no tools required. Here's a 23 second video showing how it installs.
Easy to clean: the Meld Knob is simple to remove and cleans up quickly with soapy water in your sink.
Long battery life: you won't need to replace the batteries very often, but standard AAA batteries are convenient, so the Meld Knob + Clip uses those.
Designed with Safety in Mind
We care about safety in the kitchen, so we have included several key features.
You turn it on: to start using your Meld Knob + Clip, turn on your burner by pushing in and turning like a regular knob. Meld then takes over once you let the app know the burner is on. Meld cannot turn the burner on for you.
We turn it off: you can use the Meld Knob just like a regular knob. This means you can turn off your knob at any time. Meld will also turn itself off once a recipe completes so you’ll never forget to turn off your burner again. Meld will also turn off your burner if you the contents of your cookware evaporate or your burner blows out.
Works on Virtually All Gas & Electric Cooktops
Under the Cover
It’s natural for people to be curious about exactly how the Meld Knob + Clip work. Here Chief Scientist, Darren Vengroff demonstrates how Meld works.
Where We're At
The Meld Knob + Clip that you see in our videos and photos are fully functional. We use them to cook every day!
We’re passionate about helping people make great meals. Our vision is to make it effortless to cook the perfect meal every time. The Meld Knob + Clip is the first in a line of products that helps you do that.
Based in Seattle, Washington in the heart along the ship canal, we started working on Meld full time in early 2014. Since then our team has grown to five full time employees and many part-timers.
Jon Jenkins: Co-founder & CEO. JJ, a passionate home cook, has a history of growing and managing teams to deliver high quality consumer products. Prior to Meld, JJ was head of engineering at Pinterest, where he played an instrumental role in growing the engineering team from a few dozen engineers to well over a hundred. Before Pinterest, JJ spent nine years at Amazon where he led a variety of teams including one of the teams for the first Kindle Fire tablet.
Darren Vengroff: Co-founder & Chief Scientist. Darren is an award-winning leader in precision food tech as the creator of Sous Vide Dash and PolyScience Sous Vide Toolbox, which won the Innovation Award at the 2012 International Chef’s Congress. Prior to Meld, Darren was Chief Scientist at Rich Relevance. He has also founded several other startups and worked at larger tech companies like Amazon, where he met JJ.
Matt Goyer: Head of Product and Marketing. Matt used to be hopeless in the kitchen, but Meld has changed that. Before keeping the Meld team honest about delivering a simple product, Matt led marketing at Redfin for over three years after starting at Redfin as their second product manager.
Owen Hay: Engineer. Owen left writing games to help Meld let everyone level up in the kitchen. Prior to Meld, Owen was a longtime veteran at Amazon where he focused on building unique interactive experiences. He carried that forward into the video games, working on both social games, and AAA titles like Hawken.
Mark Baumback: Engineer. After ten years at Amazon, Mark left a senior development role working on consumer products like the Amazon Echo to help Meld with our backend infrastructure. Mark is an expert in this area; every time you order a product from Amazon you are using Mark’s software.

Risks and challenges
We've backed many Kickstarter projects ourselves, so we know how important it is to deliver a high quality product on time. This is why we waited until we were ready to start mass manufacturing so as to remove as much risk and uncertainty as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
