A revelatory examination of the future of HIV/AIDS and how current networking technology empowers us to affect change.
About 'THE SOCIAL
We are making a documentary film about the HIV/AIDS crisis and how influencers and everyday citizens can use new networking technologies to encourage positive social change. We have spent two years developing the film and completing principle photography and have captured extraordinary footage from South Africa and around the world. We now need your help to finish the movie. We met extraordinary people that are developing exciting new solutions to the problem of HIV and AIDS at the ground level and we hope that the film will help catalyze positive social and cultural change in that fight. Your support will help this project reach the world and realize its goal. We hope you'll join us on the journey.

A note from the Director:
Welcome to ‘The Social Cure.’ Thank you for taking the time to find out about our project and our kickstarter campaign. I started making independent film because I recognize and believe in not only its ability to entertain, but also its capacity to affect our understanding of the world, to inspire and motivate us, to reflect our experience of our world and to bring us closer together, as a collective audience.
My team and I have dedicated ourselves to this premise: to harness visual media’s potential to affect positive social and cultural change. 'The Social Cure' will be our first release.
I decided to make ‘The Social Cure’ as I came to see the emerging potential for a future free from HIV and AIDS related deaths. In exploring the amazing culture and landscape of South Africa, a resilient and radiant country facing the worst HIV epidemic in the world, I encountered emerging research on the use of social networks to affect positive social and behavioral change. When I saw how this research and a few dedicated people were changing their communities with the same tools we have at our disposal every day, I knew that this was an important story to share, one that is relevant around the world. We hope you'll join us to help us bring this film to a global audience.
ABOUT THE FILM:
South Africa hosts the largest HIV epidemic in the world. 17% of the South African adult population is living with HIV, with the disease disproportionately targeting underprivileged and minority communities. The Social Cure examines South Africa's HIV/AIDS crisis, surveying its speculated causes and multipliers. We hope to raise global awareness to the profound affect the disease is having on this nation, understanding that the hyperactivity of the disease in South Africa brings the behavior of the virus into sharp relief.
In South Africa, as little as 11% of the population own home computers, but cell phones have an astounding rate of penetration, with the number of SIM cards in circulation actually exceeding the country's total population. This puts connective technology in everyone’s hands. We follow attempts to use this pervasive connectivity to encourage HIV testing and to destigmatize the disease. We explore how we can maximize the potential of our most common networking devices like Facebook and Twitter to encourage positive cultural shifts like, but not exclusive to, the destigmatization of HIV. Using these tools we can normalize HIV testing and treatment and move toward a future free from HIV / AIDS and other social ills.
In my time in South Africa I discovered a culture and social response to the epidemic that I believe can serve as an example to the rest of the world. I was privileged to get to know some of the most heroic and buoyant people I’ve ever known. They were courageous and generous enough to share their most personal and optimistic stories of living with HIV themselves, and in their homes and their communities; stories that help us understand what makes a role model and an “influencer” within our networks; stories that normalize and humanize the HIV pandemic. We want to share those stories with you…but we need your help.
I’ve been lucky enough to work with an amazing, dedicated team of artists and filmmakers on this project who have been working tirelessly, fueled by their own belief in the potential effect of this film. And we’ve come a long way…but we need your help to finish.
We’ve finished principle photography on an amazing film which includes interviews with top officials at UNAIDS, the National Department of Health and leading scholars researching data in social networking technologies. Now we need finishing funds to help complete this film and bring it to a global audience. The funds we raise with this campaign will facilitate the film edit, sound edit, sound mix, color correction, titles and graphics for the film. Our funding goal reflects the cost of the film completion – we hope to not only meet this goal, but exceed it, so that we may not only lift our production value to meet the highest cinematic standards, but to begin to afford the marketing and festival submissions that will help this film reach a global audience.
Starting now, we need your help to not only complete the film, but to bring it to the widest audience possible. For us to tell the story is not enough, we need to spread the word, send the message as far and wide as we can – you can help.
Please give what you can. Every little bit helps. Please don't underestimate your power to move this message closer to a global audience. We’ve done our best to show our thanks with what we believe are some awesome incentives including wristbands, buttons and other wearables that we hope you’ll don with pride. We have art and DVDs, interviews with the filmmakers and an enthusiastic openness to other suggestions, questions or off-hand comments – get in touch with us. How powerful, how motivating is our simple longing for connection with one another?
Once awareness is raised, can positive social change be affected without a financial incentive? Now that we're connected, how can we affect a healthier community, positive social and cultural change? How can we not only communicate messages that promote positive change, but encourage them to be internalized by the individual?
What other positive behaviors can we influence?
How can you and your friends change the world?
We've become aware of how we can use current technologies to drive the expansion of our social networks and self-promote, publicize, even defame, but what other changes can our hyper-connected, network-oriented relations affect?
The SOCIAL CURE explores how we can affect one another to contribute to a better, safer, healthier world.
** Viewed across the globe, this film hopes to inspire individuals to use their social networking capabilities to influence positive behavior and affect a positive global movement.
