It’s easy to find books that teach you how to draw a character but memorable characters are more than just looks. The Character Designer’s Journal is a book that takes a new and unique approach to character design. The book will teach character development from the inside out as well as cast creation, character profiling, concept development and much more!
Whether you are roleplaying, writing, or even creating the next great graphic novel this book will take your characters to the next level and teach you how to make well-rounded and carefully crafted characters for any project.
About the Project
I developed the idea for The Character Designer’s Journal because for years I noticed as a roleplayer, writer and as a creative person in general that there was always a surplus of resources for how to draw a character but never a mention of what I felt made characters pop. There was no guide to the things that are under the surface like personality, habits, and preferences. I’ve always had a passion for character design and felt the same things that made real people interesting were integral to a well designed character too.
I started actively crafting the book about 2 years ago and now at a very scary but exciting stage of my life I’ve decided to take the next step with it and self-publish the book.
My goals were to focus less on visuals and more on creating characters inside and out so I could teach people a more full circle and holistic method to making characters. The book isn’t just aimed at artists but also at writers, roleplayers and any creative person who needs to make characters for a project.
In addition to the main book other companion products such as an exercise workbook, resource disc, and pocket reference are planned pending the success of the initial book.
The Kickstarter is primarily to raise funds to produce the graphics for the project as I'm planning to mostly use high quality 3D renders throughout the book in combination with 2D vectors.
2D Graphics and assets will be acquired from Envato and Dreamstime. I've budgeted out around $800.00 USD for things like photoshop actions and other incidental and pricier assets from Envato. The large portion of money is for 8 months of subscription on Dreamstime at the 25 image/month level at $5,272.00 USD.
The remaining $3,428.00 USD is for 3D assets from Reallusion and Daz. The majority of the renders will be done in Iclone Character Creator but some of it will also be done in Daz.
Risks and challenges
Writing can take time so I don't have a solid estimation of when the book will be ready for publishing. While a good 30%-40% is already drafted on paper I have no way to account for incidentals, creating graphics and the creative process in general. My hope is to be publishing ready by the end of next year and rewards won't be sent out until 1-5 months following the book being published and will be done in batches based on support tier.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
