When Anna was just thirteen-years-old, her father died in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan. Seeing the effect it had on her mother and brother, Anna instinctively took on a protective role, always putting her family first, just like her father did. Now, four years later, she has reached an impasse: she must either give up college or abandon her family to pursue her dreams to be an astrophysicist.
Navigating her last year in high school, she finally catches the attention of her long-time crush, Steve McCormick. She soon gets a taste of all the teenage fun she gave up in order to be there for her family, but it comes with a price: her brother gets himself into trouble without her supervision and Anna starts to wonder if Steve’s attention is genuine. Is he using her and her smarts for his own benefit?
All this teenage drama is just enough to distract Anna from a threat growing within her that could possibly topple her whole world. For as long as she can remember, Anna has had a strange cluster of freckles on her arm. At first, there were only two. Then, every few years, new ones appeared, but they always remained harmless brown spots on her skin. Now, they’re starting to transform. First, as a rash. Then, as boils. But Anna is analytical, sensible, and she sees a perfectly reasonable explanation for everything.
Everything can be explained, right?
Anna’s world is thrown upside down as she faces hallucinations, strange physical changes, and a haunting shadow man. Will she be able to figure out what’s wrong with her before it’s too late?
ANNA (A STARSEED NOVEL) is a 432 page Young Adult Science Fiction novel written by Meghan Riley. After careful self-editing, it was posted to Wattpad, a large online writing community and smartphone app that allows people to read books for free. On Wattpad, ANNA received over 50,000 reads, won a 2012 Watty Award (an annual awards event voted on by thousands of readers on Wattpad) in the Science Fiction genre, and received a lot of great feedback. Now, she needs YOUR help to get it professionally edited and published.
Reader Responses (Just a few)
@DeannaHonafius “Meghan, Thank you for sacrificing the time with your family and friends to write this book. It was entertaining, full of imagery, and the fact you really were able to express the character's feeling, emotions and personalities with that much detail, is fantastic. I look forward to your writing and Anna does deserve a second book. So take your time and make #2 better than the first. :)”
@Forealways11 “This book is absolutely amazing!!!!! I wanted to cry so much at the end because it was over, but I'm good for now since there will be a book 2.Everything about this is great, from the idea, to the plot, to the writing, to the characters. I found myself connecting to Anna a lot, and i don't get attached to characters easily. Can't wait to read the second!!!”
@EdenRoss “I just finished reading Anna and I must say that if it was published I would buy it as soon as it came out in hardback and then I would run screaming to all my friends "OH MI WORD YA GOTTA READ DIS!!!!!!" So pleeeeeaaaaaaaaaasssseeeee keep writing. I loved how you took your time through the book and how you described the characters and thought everythin out. There were no loose ties except for those needed for the cliff hanger. It was also a great story line and looks like you did researching into physics because it was very detailed in that aspect too. I must say, i strongly encourage you too publish it. It has become one of my favorites. I feel like it needs more comments on how good it is too, but since this comment is so long I'll say one thing more. I love how you put God into it. You made the character with the faith of a real teenager and not something overpowering or totally against the thought. Good luk on the next book and keep up the good work.”
@JessicaThompson “I love the ending, even though I'm left hanging.I love the idea of all the new prospects that await Anna for her new life in a second book.I thought the pace of the book was good.It wasn't too fast and it didn't drag either. It really kept my attention and there were many times I needed to put the book down to get back to my life and I couldn't bring myself to do it.I'm really proud of you and how well you write.Great Job!”
@Ellem_A “I for one am hoping it is a 2 part story. I thoroughly enjoyed Anna, and especially all the twists and turns at the end. …Talk about throw in a few twists and turns, one moment I am rooting for Steve, then Jared, then I am worrying about Michael, then rooting for Steve again, and I just knew McCormick was bad news. I didn't even suspect Jared of being anything other than nice until Steve was looking at him funny at homecoming and even then I wasn't sure if it was just jealously or not. But I must admit I hoped Steve hadn't set her up to look stupid at the dance, and was glad the way that bit turned out. Holy crap girl, the second half of this book had loads of little twists.”
@Charliemayeid "my sister started reading your book 'Anna' and told me to start reading it straight away. After she read the first few parts about the shadow man, she wouldn't even go to the kitchen on her own cos she was so scared ahah :P Your books are amazing. The first book I've read on this site that truly should be on paper :) "
@JoniLopez “Holy crap!! That was so intense and amazing!! I really loved it and I cannot wait to read the 2nd half!!! :)”
@jeddaj “wow! i lalalove this book! so going into my library. I will be reading it again”
@AwdreyMachoski “Just awesome! What can I say?! one of the most intriguing books I ever put my eyes on! Please, make a sequel!”
@GetSuga88 “Truly an amazing story. I'm looking forward to the next installment; definitely reading that!“
@SouthernWind “It should be on New York's Best Seller List! Loved it.”

Risks and challenges
As with any creative project, there will be challenges along the way, but I will work through each one diligently. The editor may take over a month to go through ANNA due its length. After I receive their suggestions, I have to go through the novel myself and make changes. Then, I’ll have to send it back to them for a second round of edits. I predict all of this will take a few months. I don’t expect it to take as long as a year, but I have set December 2013 as my delivery date. I will have everyone’s copies out the door to them as soon as possible and keep you all updated.
There is one thing I can promise – At the end of this project, you will have a well written, well presented book to read and share with others.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
