This is a long-running fantasy webcomic about a pack of liars, drunks and thieves at the end of their world. 1st print run.
Godsend is written by the elusive and illustrious Jesse Bausch (author of hard-to-find gems such as Strange Detective Tales), and drawn by me, Meg Gandy. We’ve been at work on it for a couple years—you can see our progress over yonder—and finally have enough to make a respectably sized book. This is the first three chapters.
Thousands of years ago, the myths say the other gods of the pantheon left, abandoning the earth to the all-father, Ahma. They also say one, the trickster Nyssen, will return with a vengeance, to end Ahma’s rule and enslave the people of the world. It's around this prophecy that a scattering of incredibly influential and power-obsessed religions have sprung. This is the world Dolan and Jaime, a couple of desperate street kids, are swept up into when Dolan accidentally pulls a god’s weapon from a rock.
But the prophecies go sour almost immediately. And our bickering, panicking heroes are left to make sense of a mission they know they don’t have the power to pull off.
The first three chapters are already complete. There are 150 pages (chapter splashes included) of comics online, and we have already started work on chapter 4. All that needs doing is converting the comic to PDF, and then actually publishing the thing. And that's where we need help.
So! Here is what the money will cover:
-500 books, at 6 x 6.3, roughly 150 pages. This comes in just shy of $3000
-a block of ISBNs—why a block? Because a single ISBN is $100, whereas 10 of them is $250. I already know this is all I want to do forever, so why blow more cash than necessary on them? I will use them all, there will be a hundred more kickstarters, and hopefully you guys will love the results.
-charms and posters. You guys like swag, right? The charms will be a minimum of $200, and I’m still hunting down the best place to print the posters at.
-shipping. This one is the killer. The thing nobody thinks about, that adds up quick. If it’s $5 a book? And then shipping the posters will be extra, because they’ll need a separate container. I think I’ve built the basic cost of shipping into the prices, but if you’re also ordering a poster, or if you live outside the US, a few extra dollars for shipping would help me out in a big way. For real, shipping for just 200 books, inside the US? $1000. The other kickstarters I've been peeking at has those from Mexico and Canada adding $10 extra, so I guess that's fair. I hope that's fair. Anyway, I'd be grateful.
-kickstarter and amazon's fees. Self explanatory! Also, wtf math? My math teachers were finally proven right. By kickstarter.
Now, I’ve put limits on the swag because they’re really a fun extra—this is about making books, not phone fobs. And what is boils down to is this: if everyone got just the book (and all our love and affection, and the digital stuff), then I need just 250 backers, and we’re good to go. If you guys are wonderful, beautiful people who want me to sketch in your book and track down Jesse and bully him into signing books (AND ACTUALLY PROVING HIS EXISTENCE), then only 143 of you need apply.
Finally, in the remarkable event that we raise more than we need, that money will go back into the books. I'd love to be able to put some spot gloss on the cover, or add french flaps, or increase the paper quality--i just want to make some beautiful books for you guys.
