Megatropolis will be an extraordinary large scale interactive installation at Burning Man 2010. Closely aligned with the art theme of this years 25th anniversary event ‐ “Metropolis”.
Megatropolis is a massively collaborative project on a scale that only rarely happens outside Burning Man. The scale has inspired many groups and artists to pledge their time, experience, resources, and fundraising capabilities to the project. And while we have many people busting their little hearts out planning and running fundraisers across the globe, we are calling on the distributed Burning Man community for help!
Taking the form of six unique and iconic buildings, the tallest of which will reach 54’ into the desert sky, Megatropolis will be a site to behold. Not only a major visual artwork in its own right, but an interactive environment which festival participants will be invited to fill with art, theatre, music, and community orientated activity.
Each structure will contain unique thematic spaces, designed around aspects of city life, and creating an "untidy hub of social interaction". These spaces will be stages onto & into which performance, production, and activity groups will be able to contribute and/or use for any purpose they desire that serves the larger festival community either through interaction, theme specific commentary, temporary service provision, or by being "organic, spontaneous, (and) heterogeneous".
Arrestingly lit by spectacular & ever‐changing LED arrays by night, the city of Megatropolis will exist, bustle, and continuously evolve over a week in one of the world's least hospitable, least urban environments, the Black Rock Desert.
Set against the geologic time scale of such an environment, Megatropolis will be a meditation on the vanishingly brief transience of humanity's biggest & most hubristic impact on the world, our cities.
At the end of its week long evolution, the whole community will be invited to watch as Megatropolis is burnt to the ground, in an unforgettable image of ALL city's inevitable decline & death.
We decided to go with Kickstarter for fundraising because we don't get the money unless & until we hit our target, which gives you guys, the potential donors, the certainty that we will only receive your donation once the project has reached critical mass and is sure to go ahead!
Every penny that we receive over our "all systems go" target will be put to use in the further prettification and insanitisation of the Megatropolis project. We are hoping to receive more than $10 000 dollars and rest assured - it will all be put into the production of the Megatropolis installation.
How can we justify this? Because the project actually costs $30 000 and this is just one of our fundraising activities. Once the project is built, we will be spending all remaining money on more pretty lights, more features, and most importantly, more fuel and flame effects to help us burn the entire project to the ground for the greater glory of the community!
There is obviously no upper limit to the amount we can spend on this, we're gonna spend it all, and we want the community to decide the size of the spectacle...
With your help we will be creating something really special.
