Phantom Gear is a new original game for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. We want to deliver an old school experience that takes inspiration from different games, both modern games or games from our childhood, like Shantae, Kirby, Megaman X, Castlevania, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, Ristar, Gunstar Heroes and Monster World IV, to name a few. And we need your help to make it real.
Our plan is to finish this game and release it as a beautiful physical edition complete with cart, box, and manual, offering the best quality possible. The game will be delivered in a multi-region cartridge compatible with any Sega Genesis / Mega Drive (PAL, NTSC and NTSC-J) console versions I, II, and III.
We want to show the true power of the Genesis / Mega Drive. Like other retro developers, we want to take it to the next level and push our favorite consoles past their limits. And now, using current technologies and all the documentation and techniques discovered and created by the homebrew scene, we can achieve that.

Bits Rule is a studio born at the end of 2018 and located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Our main focus is to develop games for Retro Consoles. Our team has more than 10 years of experience working in games for both local and international companies. We share the same love for retro-gaming and we decided to work together in our first project as a team.
We chose the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive for multiple reasons. It’s the console that everyone in the team love and grew up with. Back in the 90’s it was easier to find Sega products here in Argentina, so we all spent many happy hours with this console.
Another reason is there is a great developer community for the Genesis / Mega Drive. There are powerful tools available that can make game development easier, like SGDK, Second Basic, and BasiEgaXorz.
But in the end we decided to make our game like back in the 90’s: in pure Assembly language and making our own tools. This allows us to take advantage of all the potential of the Mega Drive.
This project has been in development since the end of 2018, but before that we were testing the hardware developing tech demos and prototypes. When we completed our test and found some things that that we liked, we began to plan the first demo of Phantom Gear. We are testing the game in different console models constantly to ensure maximal compatibility.
One of the most difficult parts of developing games for retro consoles is cartridges manufacturing, so we decided to find someone that could help us to deliver the best quality product. For that reason we chose to team up with Mega Cat Studio, a company with an excellent track record developing retro games, like Coffee Crisis, Little Medusa and Lethal Wedding, and helping other indie studios to publish theirs games, like Old Towers and Tanzer.
Phantom Gear has been developed in our spare time from 2015 (when the programmer started learning 68K Assembly and testing the console limitations) until now when we released the game’s demo. We want to release the finished game as soon as possible and to do that we need your help to fund its development. This will help us to work 100% in the game and deliver a wonderful final product.

Risks and challenges
Making a game isn’t an easy task, and making one for an old console add an extra challenge. For this reason we make sure to build a demo to prove that we are capable of delivering this game. We have 90% of the game engine completed and we developed our own tools beforehand so we only focus on produce the assets for the remaining level, bosses and enemies. We have considered the time that we need to finish the remaining gameplay features and possible eventualities.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
