The Smurglian race has come to Earth and they're not leaving until they steal our four most prized commodities: our metal music, the best coffee, cat videos, and all of the WiFi. Challenge them through unique and innovative levels inspired by real-life areas (except for the Mars stage – that's just Will's imagination), on a retro platform that needs new games like Earthlings need WiFi, the Sega Genesis. Join Black Forge Coffeehouse baristas Nick and Ashley, two galaxy gladiators called to arms to stop this madness and remove the Smurglian threat from Earth.
The Smurgliens can have the Kid Rocks, Coldplays, and Linkin Parks… but if you don’t help our heroes fend off against the alien-assimilated elderly, bros, cowgirls, and country western singers, who knows what could happen!
Let's get started taking you through a tour of the behind the scenes of this beat 'em up.
Early promo video playing with Mega Cat below. Without opposable thumbs, strategy is limited, hence Player 2 not moving much.Intro
Mega Cat Studios met Black Forge Coffee House at a local video game event to raise money for Children's Hospital.
Watching pure joy blossom on a parent’s face as they share their childhood favorite arcade classic with their children is an incredible moment to be a part of. Feelings like these, and a mutual respect of their unique businesses, pushed MCS and BFCH to collaborate on a gaming project.
The Black Forge Coffee House in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is home to all sorts of people, places, and things - like most nouns. But what ties the city together is vibrant and unique web of communities. Take for example the reason for this campaign, the Black Forge Coffee House and their upcoming Sega Genesis video game (yes, you read that correct), Coffee Crisis.
You may ask yourself, Kickstarter campaign writer or internet surfer, “What does coffee have to do with a crowdfunding video game for the Sega Genesis?” Well, my most inquisitive reader, that is exactly the point. This campaign focuses on all of us, and is a celebration of everything about us that is uncommon and spectacular.
Although the combination of coffee and the metal-music culture could not have been any stranger, the BFCH represents everything that an entrepreneurship-focused, community-based company should be and more. From opening its doors to local artists wishing to share their work, to offering its inside stage as a venue for local bands wishing to have their music heard, the BFCH is creating an impact in the neighborhood of Hilltop. In fact, the BFCH’s efforts have been recognized by not only Work Hard Pittsburgh, an organization whose mission is to create and develop entrepreneurial opportunities, but other programs as well, like Pennsylvania’s own Keystone Innovation Zone.
The Retro Masters
The story behind Mega Cat Studios is a simple one. A small team of passionate people, caked in video game nostalgia, banded together and locked arms to create what many modern gamers never knew was possible, let alone relevant - to make new video games for old consoles. Recapturing that familiar feeling often referred to as “classic” and “old school” in our games is a small, but important part of Mega Cat Studios.
Being video game collectors and enthusiasts first and foremost, MCS is reviving an artform that has been lost in a world of cloud storage, virtual licenses, and download codes. In a world suffocated by the digital, MCS delivers a physical cartridge into the public’s hands. From unique and creative pack-ins and full-color manuals, to exclusive productions and limited-run releases, it is not difficult to identify a game developed and/or published by Mega Cat Studios.
Why a Kickstarter?
So why did we do it?
Mega Cat Studios is comprised of programmers, designers, writers, and pop-tart munchers, but mostly we are members of the retro community who still believe in the value and virtue of video gaming's golden age. Our mission is to pump blood into projects beautiful and strange like Coffee Crisis, but on a full-time basis. That is why we need your help.
This Kickstarter campaign is not about us. It’s about you. Gamers who want to support and be part of a vibrant and active retro community. Wild-eyed visionaries and dreamers who want new games on beloved consoles. We want to make the kinds of games you've wanted to play, the kind of games you wanted to make. And you can help us do it.
By supporting the retro weirdness and nostalgic magic, by supporting Coffee Crisis and our other games, Mega Cat Studios can release sweet 16 Bit gems on a regular basis. Help us jumpstart the Retro Renaissance.
Couch Coop Beat Em Ups are undervalued. Bring it back and get closer to Player 2 the old fashioned way.
Risks and challenges
Coffee Crisis is nearing completion, and the screenshots here represent actual gameplay footage and assets. All Mega Cat soldiers are amped up on DEMON blend coffee to make sure that everything goes according to plan.
Mega Cat Studios has support and interest from a wide network of retro studios, local businesses and citizens, and the gaming culture at large, and the devotees of Black Forge Coffee House are legion, but forecasting is never an exact science. If Coffee Crisis falls short of projections, you will be updated and we will correct our course as quickly as possible.
Supply Chain Risk
We have the technology.
We have our own PCB boards, cartridge shells in-hand, and a game that runs in beautiful, 16 Bit.
What’s at stake?
There are a handful of contributors that have put their blood, sweat, and caffeinated tears into the Coffee Crisis project. The game is the spearhead of the Retro Renaissance, but we need an extra espresso shot of support to push it over the edge and help us release, on a full-time basis, the kind of games you want to play. Without help, this retro blend of metal, video games, and quality java will end up as little more than a coffee stain on the teeth and white shirts of these fine local businesses bands, and gamers.
Community is more valuable to us than anything else. Our stretch goals include putting full stand-up arcades into one of the three locations below.
At 15k, we add a custom, complete stand-up arcade arcade based on the highest votes from contributors.
At 17k, two locations.
At 20k, all three arcades are funded
Yes, we know those values are low. This isn’t about us getting rich - it’s about community involvement, and the partners we’ve selected below to receive these arcades are all more than deserving.

Black Forge Coffeehouse
The most metal coffeehouse we’ve ever seen. There’s never a week where several events aren’t being held at BFCH, from local artists exhibiting one of a kind pieces to Anime clubs and live music.
