Meeples' Corner Upgrade Kit
We have managed to move into a new shop, but we need your help to upgrade the customer experience.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Sun, October 27 2019 8:00 PM UTC +00:00.
Meeples' Corner is a shop for board and card games based in Crediton, Devon. We stock all sorts of games for the enthusiast, from hard-to-get imports to family-friendly games to introduce the whole family to this great hobby.
Meeples’ Corner started 2013 in one small unit in the Creedy Centre as an online shop. In 2015 we added another unit to get more storage space and in 2017 we moved into two larger units and opened our local shop.
We are running regular gaming nights and are organising a larger one-day event twice a year in Crediton.
We are at every UK Games Expo (Birmingham NEC in June) and the TableTop Gaming Live, so twice a year board gamers from all over the UK can see us in action and talk to us about all things board game.
At the beginning of July Meeples’ Corner moved into new premises on the High Street in Crediton. The new shop is more spacious compared to the old one in the Creedy Centre but still quite affordable. The bigger area means we have enough space for a separate gaming area and a large storage area in the basement which results in a tidier and more organised shop.
Being directly on the High Street gives us much better visibility in the local community, which we have already noticed in the few weeks we have been in the new shop. We are also no longer inside a small arcade with other units. This independence from other businesses in the same building means we have more freedom in regards to our opening hours in the evening and also to the events we can run at the shop instead of outsourcing them to local pubs or other places we have to hire for the day.
The property became available at the end of April and between the beginning of May and the first week of July we managed to:
- Secure the lease by paying the deposit
- Get the shop connected to fast broadband
- Sign a contract with a competitive utility provider (again a deposit was necessary)
- Check the electrics and replace the old lightning
- Partly renew the flooring
- Install /upgrade all the necessary locks for doors and windows and install security cameras which allowed us to secure affordable insurance
- Move all our stock, shelving and furniture from the old to the new shop
All these things were necessary but depleted our funds.
Being in a shop this size for the first time allows us to do so much for our customers and make Meeples’ Corner bigger and better than ever before.
With your help we could turn the shop into a hub for the local gaming community so people are not just coming here to buy games but also play them, talk to other gamers and are happy to spend some time. This would include:
- a designated Gaming area with two large expandable tables (for 4-8 players each) including comfy chairs for long sessions and board game cover prints for decoration
- a gaming library including a selection of highly-rated games and Kickstarters we have backed for the shop. Games from the library would be available to rent for a week for a small fee and any rental fee would go toward the game price if you decide to buy the game later on
- a reading corner in the shop with a selection of Gaming Magazines and books to read and a coffee machine to enjoy a nice coffee or hot chocolate
- a Bring & Buy shelf for our customers to make it possible to sell second-hand games in the shop.
To make Meeples' Corner as inviting as possible we would also need to further upgrade/renew the flooring to give the shop a more modern look and refurbish the shop toilet.
If you would like to support us, here are the different options you have:
UK Games Expo Meetup: For all backers, regardless of the pledge level, we are planning to organise a meetup at the next UK Games Expo in Birmingham. We don't know all the details yet, but we will ask you for your ideas for the meetup to make it a great occasion to meet you, our backers, have a chat and play some games.
Tier 1: £5 - Discord access and Wall of Fame (included in all other tiers)
This pledge will give you exclusive access to a Discord channel (text and voice chat service on a private server) that we will set up to communicate with our Kickstarter backers. The Discord channel will give you direct access to us and we will use it for new announcements and Kickstarter backer-exclusive board game auctions. We can also organise online games for our customers on Tabletopia, talk about interesting games that we have discovered on Kickstarter and look ahead to events we are planning.
The Wall of Fame is a tiled wall in the shop we will reserve for our Kickstarter backers. Everyone who has supported us during the Kickstarter can sign the wall during a visit or you can scan your signature and we will transfer it to the wall.
IMPORTANT: These two rewards will be included in all other pledge levels for free.
Tier 2: £10 - Mug and 12x Beer Mats
Choose this tier and a stylish glass mug with our logo and a set of twelve Meeples’ Corner beer mats are yours. Perfect for a late-night coffee at a gaming night and to protect your games from spillage!
Tier 3: £15 - Sponsorship of a Games Library Game
Sponsor one of our Games Library Games and will add your name on a sticker in the game box. You will also get a certificate of sponsorship to show you our gratitude.
As a backer on this level, you will get exclusive access to our monthly Games Library auction (games will stay in the library for roughly a year and will get sold in an auction to make space for new additions) and free shipping if you win any auction.
Tier 4: £20 - Sponsorship of Gaming Chair (limited to 12)
Sponsor one of our 12 new comfy chairs for the gaming area and we will put your name or business name tag on one of them. If you come to our shop for gaming nights this will be your chair for the evening.
Tier 5: £20 - 12 Month Sponsorship of Poster Frame (limited to 4)
We will put up four 50x50cm frames (Ikea RIBBA) with prints of board game covers up in our shop for decoration. If you sponsor one of them, you will be the one (every three months for a year) to choose the board game cover print we will put into this frame.
Tier 6: £25 - Bag of Goodies (limited to 28)
You will get a Meeples’ Corner jute bag (large enough to carry two Ticket to Ride-sized square boxes and one or two smaller games) and a bundle of promos and free games kindly provided to us by
- Japanime Games: Heart of the Crown base set and expansions, Kamigami Battles sets, playmats and promo cards
- Coiledspring Games: King of Tokyo promo character and promos for The Mind, Bunny Kingdom, Sushi Go, Photosynthesis and Fairy Tile
- Pegasus: Undo promo game and Werewolves promo characters
- Alles Fuer den Helden: Castles of Burgundy promos, a small number of free games and various other promo items
We don't have everything available in the same numbers, but we will make sure that every goodies bag will include one free game, one each of the Coiledspring Games and Pegasus items plus a Castles of Burgundy promo. We will split the remaining promos between the different bags and will make sure that every bag will include the same number of items.
Tier 7: £50 - Online Membership
This is the main reward for our loyal online customers: in exchange for your support on this tier, once a month (for a year) you will be able to get free shipping and 5% off the order total on a single order. You will also get early access (48 hours) to special offers and be able to place guaranteed pre-orders for Kickstarter games we are planning to back for the shop on an exclusive channel of our Discord server.
IMPORTANT: UK only - because of the uncertainty with Brexit and the likely impact on international shipping rates we can't offer free shipping for our international backers.
Tier 8: £50 - Offline Membership
Two main new ideas for the shop are the new games rental service and the Bring & Buy shelf. If you decide to support us on this level, you will get 12 free Bring & Buy sales (would normally result in a 10% sales fee) and 12 free game rentals (normally £4 for a normal sized game for a week). Included is also exclusive and free entry to release nights for Kickstarter games we have backed for the shop. At these nights you will be able to play the game and if you like also to buy a copy before the game becomes available to everyone else on our website and in the shop.
You will also get the Meeples' Corner bag to transport your games safely.
Tier 9: £100 - Sponsorship of Gaming Table (limited to 2)
Sponsor one of our two new gaming tables for the gaming area and we will put your name or business name tag on one of them in a prominent position. If you come to our shop for gaming nights this will also give you the right to choose the first game to play at this table on the night.
Tier 10: £180 - MobyGeek Table (limited to 1)
With us planning to use part of the Kickstarter funds to update our Gaming Area with new tables, we no longer need our trusted MobyGeek City table. The MobyGeek tables are made by Geeknson and are their smaller and more affordable versions of their massive gaming tables. Our table is from the City line, the dimensions are 80cm x 120cm with a playing area of 61cm x 103cm (the vault is 7cm deep).
The table is only available for collection in our shop, but it can easily get transported in any normal-sized car because the four legs can get removed.
Where possible we will ship physical rewards with your next online order. Otherwise, we will ship your reward as soon as everything is available (mid- to late October). If you can collect your reward at the shop, you will instead receive a 5% discount for your next buy.
IMPORTANT: BECAUSE OF THE BREXIT UNCERTAINTY AND THE UNKNOWN IMPACT IN SHIPPING RATES AND AVAILABLE SERVICE WE CAN'T OFFER INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING FOR OUR KS REWARDS.
The following add-ons can be added to any pledge (just follow the instructions below):
- Pack of 4x Beer mats: £2
- Glass Mug £6
- Shopping bag: £10
Combine Pledge levels and add-ons
It is straightforward for us to add different pledge levels together and add any of our add-ons to your pledge. For multiple rewards and different add-ons, back the highest pledge level you are interested in and increase your pledge amount by the total of everything you like as your reward/add-on. As soon as this is done, please email email@example.com to confirm the rewards you have selected. We will confirm your selections and make sure that you will receive everything you wanted.
Example: if you want to get a bag of goodies (£25) , but also want to pledge for the sponsorship of a poster frame (£20) and add a mug (£6), pledge for the bag of goodies and add £26 to your pledge (total pledge = £25 + £20 + £6= £51). After you have finalised your pledge on Kickstarter, please send us a short email confirming what is included in your pledge.
Reaching our target £2500 would allow us to realise all the aims we listed above. Should we get more support, we will use the additional funding for the following two additions to the gaming area:
£3000: Digital screen and 2x 10inch tablets
We would like to install a 40inch HD TV with a Chromecast dongle in the shop to give shop visitors access to online reviews and tutorials on Boardgamegeek and Youtube and present slideshows of the newest games available to pre-order. The content on the TV would be controlled by one of the 10inch Android tablets. The second tablet will upgrade our checkout and has to handle our Point of Sale software. Both tables can also get at one of our games table during Games Nights to display rule books, check FAQs on Boardgamegeek or watch How To Play-videos.
Reward: We have backed On Mars for our shop and are planning a release party once it has been delivered (at the moment it looks like a November/December release). Should we reach this stretch goal Paul Grogan from Gaming Rules! will join us for the release party. Paul was a developer on the game, helped write the rulebook, and created the official rules video for it. He is the perfect person to teach us the game.
The release party will be exclusive for KS backers should we reach the stretch goal. For everyone who can't attend the On Mars event, Paul has agreed to hold an online Q&A session exclusively for our backers.
£3750: Equipment for video recording and streaming
The idea is to have a streaming/recording setup at our main gaming table, which would include camera(s), microphone(s), proper lighting and a PC with a capture card and the software needed. The shop already has fibre broadband which is fast enough to handle live streams.
With this setup, we can start to produce our own online content like unboxing videos, rules explanations for German-language games and live Q&A sessions regarding new releases and pre-orders.
Reward: Should we reach this stretch goal Nick Shaw (co-designer/developer of Rome and Roll, Welcome to DinoWorld, Cerebria (solo mode), Euphoria: Ignorance is Bliss (solo mode), Wingspan (solo mode) and My Little Scythe (solo mode)) has agreed to join us for an event at the shop to play his games and to have a chance to talk to him about his work. This event will be for KS backers only and thanks to reaching the stretch goal we should be able to stream it for everyone who can’t attend in person.
The date for the event has to be confirmed but will be sometime between the end of the Kickstarter and Christmas.
Risks and challenges
The shop has moved into the new premises regardless of any funding we generate on Kickstarter. If we reach our target, you can help us realise the potential of the new shop and turn it into a hub for the local gaming community.
In regards to the timeframe for the realisation of the different parts of the project: With the campaign ending at the end of October (start of the busiest time of the year for us), we are planning to start most of the main projects (Gaming Area, Gaming Library and Streaming Setup) after Christmas. This should give us enough time to get everything sorted and start working when everything has calmed down a bit.
In regards to our rewards: all the online rewards will be available from the 1st of November. For the physical rewards, we have chosen suppliers which can send us all the necessary items within a few weeks. So four to five weeks after the end of the campaign (around the 1st of December) we should be able to start shipping using our regular shipping service we have been using for five years to fulfil all our online orders. Local customers will be notified by us as soon as we have received our deliveries and they can collect their rewards whenever it is convenient for them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
