**Tell us which are your favorites (for narrator, popular songs & band / composer!
First of all, thank you for taking time to look at our Kickstarter. Now that you're hear you are probably asking the question, "With all the great films and game projects on Kickstarter, why should I care about this or support it?” Great question and the answer is best described in 4 parts:
#1. GAMERS ARE A MISUNDERSTOOD GROUP: One of the major goals of our film is to tear down the misconceptions the public has by revealing the truth about video game culture and the amazing, vibrant community gamers have created over the years.
2. THE VIDEOGAME INDUSTRY IS MISUNDERSTOOD: Another big part of the story in our film is about the industry itself; the people who created it and the developers and publishers who have dedicated their lives to making great games. Much of this passion and artistry is overlooked by the mainstream media and all "game people" are painted with a broad stroke that is incorrect. We know this is not true and our film goes behind the scenes to tell the true story of the people who drive this amazing industry with passion and dedication.
3. TO TELL THE WHOLE STORY: If you're a gamer or even a film buff, you may have seen half hour TV specials on "violence in games" or mini documentaries about a specific game, gaming event or the early days of video games but we want to tell the whole story of video games, not just part of it (more on the 'story' below.) We have shot interviews and footage for the past year at almost all the major game developers & publishers as well as indie game developers. The story is there waiting to be crafted we just need the resources ($) to finish it.
4. TO MAKE THE FILM THE BEST IT CAN BE: We have already shot the film! That's right, we started about a year ago just before E3 and have already shot 95% of the film. Now we need your help to finish our movie with quality, time and care. This film will be the representation of a great industry and amazing group of people and we want to make it as truly awesome as it has the potential to be. And if you support us you can now say, this is your movie because we cannot do it without you.
Video Games: The Movie is a feature length documentary which aims to tell the untold story of video games by an in depth look into not only how games are made, marketed and consumed by looking back at the industry’s history, current trends as well as the evolution of gamer culture. Where is the industry and the audience headed? Is it the same place? The entire story will be told through the eyes of game developers, publishers, and consumers. The film is not just another film about the games industry but will attempt something much more ambitious: the question of what it means to be a gamer, a game maker and where “video games" will be in 10, 20, even 100 years from now. My hope is that the film, when finished, will consist of 4 in depth parts, which are...
When attempting to make a film there are 3 basic parts that must be equally executed which are Pre-production (planning), Production (shooting) and Post-production (editing / finishing). The 1st two are done (woo hoo!) but we need your help with Post-production to get across the finish line. Here's a quick breakdown of our Post-production needs (which all cost $):
EDITING - As many great filmmakers have said over the years, "The final rewrite is in the editing room." This could not be more true in my experience. We need the resources to pay editors to complete the film with the time and care needed to make it as great as we know it can be.
MUSIC SCORE - As you can imagine, music is of huge importance in making a good film that people connect with. We need funds to get a music score that matches the tone and emotion of our story.
ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE - For the historical piece of the film we need to license archival clips from the 60's through the 90's to give a visual to that part of our story. We have great interviews with icons and pioneers in gaming but need visuals to match their great stories.
VOICE OVER NARRATION - We plan for much of the story of the film to be told by the people, but for those sections where some explanation is needed to tie the 4 sections of the film together, we need a great VO narrator. We have several known VO actors in mind but need the funds to pay them.
MOTION GRAPHICS - The story we are trying to tell with our film is a BIG one and much like VO narration, there are places in the film that will need some extra visual *UMPH* to get a key point across. We already have some fun ideas on how a great motion graphics package can help to tell the 4 parts of the story. Motion graphics also include a quality intro & end credits sequence.
Finally, there are a handful of interviews we still need to shoot to complete the story we want to tell. Most of these interviews pertain to the next generation of game consoles. A small portion of the funds we raise will be used to shoot these final interviews.
If interest and support for Video Games: The Movie is big enough, we have LOTS of plans and ideas of how extra funds will absolutely make the film better. Any and all funds received will go directly into our Post-Production budget. Here's a breakdown of how we would utilize funds if we received them beyond our $60k goal.
$80k: Celebrity Narrator (Narrator TBD). There is a reason Morgan Freeman is the most used narrator in documentaries. He has a voice that people know and trust. A "known" narrator will only make the message of our film that much more credible to a wide audience. Again, we want to include our backers in this decision and if we reach the $80k level we will provide a list of those we are considering and see who you all like best.
$100k : Purchase license for 3-6 "known" songs to place throughout the film (songs TBD). Licensing music is tricky and every song and artist have different rates and deals so while we can't say which songs we would purchase just yet, we know that recognizable music helps alot to bring viewers into the experience. We very much want to incorporate you into this decision and if we reach the $100k level we will provide a list of songs we are considering. The songs that you like best are the ones we will use!
$120k : A musical score created by a renowned band and/or composer . With this level of support we will approach several known bands / composers with an offer to score the main theme tracks of the film (opening, closing, several key songs in Act 1-4.)
Rest assured that all additional funds will be used towards making Video Games: The Movie the best film it can be!
Without your help we can't make the film we want to make. If you have watched our trailer you can see we have a very big story to tell with our film and we can't do it with the quality it deserves without your help. I have been a backer for several projects on Kickstarter and have always thought it was an amazing support community for artists and innovators of all kinds. I was nervous about launching a Kickstarter for my film since it is so close to my heart, but after alot of encouragement from people in the community, here I am. My hope is that with your help I can bring this film across the finish line and show the world the true story of the industry and the people.
As an independent filmmaker I have very few options to raise funds (as I'm sure every other independent artist understands) so Kickstarter is a Godsend. I only hope our message gets out to the amazingly passionate and loyal community of gamers & film lovers.
Risks and challenges
Our goal is to have the film finished by September of 2013 and have our 1st premiere in Los Angeles. We will then also begin submitting to all the majorfilm festivals (Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW and several others.) If you fund the project, we intend to start post-production right away and finish VGTM in time to submit it to submit to the major film festivals! The team at Mediajuice Studios led by VGTM Director Jeremy Snead have over 10 years of experience producing top tier film & video content for some of the world's biggest video game companies, so know that the film is in very good hands.
All of the super cool rewards like T-shirts, posters and bonus DVDs will be fulfilled well before September 2013 but we are allowing this window between our Kickstarter campaign and the film's completion to make sure we don't promise an early deadline and miss it. All that to say, we hope to start getting all the goodies fulfilled right after our Kickstarter campaign.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
