WHY WE'RE KICKSTARTING
Exocomics started in 2009, purely as a creative outlet. Li was unemployed at the time, and we never imagined that it would be so widely read. The possibility that our little project could become self-sufficient is huge for us, and that's what this is about.
For a while now we have had requests from fans to make books, but we've never had the funds to make it happen. We don't make much from the comic and we've always wanted the content to remain as free as possible - we don't even run ads (because we hate ads, and you do too). Kickstarter is the opportunity we need, both to follow through with the release of the books, and to help fund exo-related stuff in the future. If we do well enough, Li might even be able to make this her full time job!
There will be 2 volumes:
Volume 1: Comics 1-100
Volume 2: Comics 101-200
Each book will be 21cm square, approx. 150 pages, perfect bound
Each book will also have sketches, other fun bits from Li's sketchbook, musings, behind-the-scenes-y stuff and various full-colour artwork for your viewing enjoyment.
We're super excited to be able to work with award-winning designer Kyra Clarke of Threaded Magazine! Her talent and experience will help us make the books amazing.
We will have two editions of each volume:
- Physical book: Signed, beautifully made and proudly printed locally in New Zealand.
- Digital edition. Guaranteed DRM-less and in as many formats as we can manage.
All physical books will be signed by Li. Signed versions won't be available afterwards!
Some shipping is included with each reward, but because we live in New Zealand, shipping will be on average slightly more than if we were based in the US. Please see the table below to work out if shipping costs extra for you:
Every pledge of the minimum of $9 or more will get your name printed on the special Kickstarter Backer's page in both books.
Every pledge of the minimum amount or more will get a beautifully laid out, digital collection of the best full-colour art produced for exocomics over the years, including one-panels, wallpapers and Facebook-exclusives. The artbook will also contain exclusive, never before seen artwork. Qualify for any pledge reward and you get the art book as well.Signed Poster:
In the higher tiers, you'll get a signed, never-seen-before, top secret A2 size poster that will be created exclusively for this project, and not available afterwards.Original art:
At the highest tier, Li will draw a totally original piece featuring yourself in some description of your choosing, with the Exocomics characters in the front cover of one of your two books.Higher:
Do you want to pledge really quite a lot? You deserve something even more special! If you have an idea for a ridiculous-tier reward that you're willing to pledge for, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll try our best to make it happen!
These rewards were released on April 4 after we reached 50% funding:
Gift pack (for sharing!): $500
Two of everything in the $250 set, plus any 2 shirts (see here) and you get to pick any 4 exocomics artworks: comics, one-panels, or anything else you like, to be printed in colour at A3 size. Both of you get your names on the thank you pages.
Cover Artwork: $1000 each
Absolutely unique, this reward is the original pencil artwork that Li will use to create the cover art for the books. Art for volume one and two are available separately, and each one is framed, signed, and comes with everything in the $250 bundle as well.
- UPDATE: Thanks to Ken X and Göran Sernhed who have pledged for the Cover Artwork rewards!
If this kickstarter initiative is successful and we get more than our target, Li might be able to quit her job and work on exocomics full time. Do you even know how awesome that is? Self-sufficiency is like the webcomics holy grail.
This is amazingly significant and would be a dream come true.
If Li can do this full-time, she'll be able to do lots of stuff like commit to more comics per week, create new merch, and other exciting projects to help make exocomics financially self-sustaining.
Thanks for your time. If you have any questions or comments, you can email us at email@example.com or leave a comment on this page. We're really excited to see how this goes.
