About

Dscramble™ gives you the thrill of a dice game with the intellectual challenge of a word game. It's like we put the best of Boggle®, Scrabble®, and Yahtzee®* in a blender and made the best smoothie ever! *(Brands herein are trademarks of their respective owners)

HISTORY

The game was created by inventor Fred Nightingale of Cadillac, Michigan and was patented through InventHelp®. Unfortunately, Fred passed away in 2015 before his game could be commercialized, but his obituary noted how proud he was of his creation.

When M Designs Studio saw the Dscramble game, we fell in love with its unique combination of "skill" and "chance." We knew we had to bring it to market and so we licensed it from the inventor’s heir. We are honored to introduce Fred’s game to the Kickstarter Community, but we need your help because we cannot bring this game to market without you!

WHO WE ARE

We are M Designs Studio, a product development & design firm with extensive experience in marketing and game development (www.MDesignsStudio.com). Putting this campaign on Kickstarter is the fastest way for us to get the game into your hands and make improvements as a community. We have a defined set of rules to play the game, but we also have added a few tweaks to enable playing a more complex game. We think this game is great, but we need your help to make it even better.

GAME PLAY

To play, a player rolls all seven dice and arranges the resulting letters into connecting words. Once the player’s turn is finished, the score is calculated as determined by the numbers on each die. You add up the numbers on the dice that are used in making words, and you subtract the numbers from any dice that were not used in making connected words. That way you are rewarded for using all of your letters. The game is over when a player reaches the predetermined total score (e.g., 50 points).

For example, the sample roll below shows the creation of two words:

COW = 3 + 1 + 4 = 8 points

WAY = 4 + 1 + 4 = 9 points

MINUS DICE NOT USED = -9 - 3 = -12 points

TOTAL SCORE = 8 + 9 - 12 = 5 points

You can play it in single-player mode where one player rolls the dice, makes words and scores the turn, or you can play in multi-player mode, where all players make words based on the roll of the dice. Detailed instructions are provided.

But we’ve also included a special die. It is also 14-sided but instead of being printed with letters and numbers, it is printed with the numbers 1 – 14. This die is important because the other 7 dice have a few sides with blanks on them. If you roll a blank, you can substitute any letter (similar to blank tiles in Scrabble®) and your point score for that letter will be determined by the roll of the special die (the result between 1 to 14).

WHAT’S THE MONEY FOR?

To bring Dscramble to the market, we have to create new molds and printing plates for the dice and the minimum order quantities are high, which leads us to the project goal of $6000. This cost will cover the creation of new molds, new printing plates, production of the minimum order quantity of dice and shipping. If we don’t reach our goal, we cannot launch the product.

IN SUMMARY

Dscramble has the excitement of rolling the dice combined with the challenge of making words out of the results. So if you love Boggle®, Scrabble®, or Yahtzee® please help us make this game a reality. We think you will love it as much as we do!

MATH & PHYSICS NERD SECTION

The dice used in the game are unique in that they are 14-sided dice that contains 6 square sides and 8 hexagonal sides. If the die lands on a square edge there is a square edge facing up. If the die lands on a hexagonal edge, there is a hexagonal edge facing up.

We set off a bit of a ruckus when we asked several of our friends who have math/physics backgrounds the following question: Is this a fair die? In other words, can you assume that the actual odds of rolling a square are equal to the theoretical odds (6 sides out of 14 sides = 42.9%) and the actual odds of rolling a hexagon are equal to the theoretical odds (8 sides out of 14 sides = 57.1%)? What followed was an extensive debate about things like area, the center of gravity and friction coefficients, and included participation from several US experts and experts from a prestigious UK university. Here are the main conclusions:

1. Area of Each Side - While the die is designed so that the area of the square side is roughly equal to the area of the hexagonal side, in reality, there is a 3.2% difference (the area of the hexagonal side is 3.2% greater than the area of the square side). This means the die is slightly more likely to land on the hexagonal side.

2. Center of Gravity – The hexagonal side is actually 5.6% greater in distance from the center of the die, and the extra weight being further from the center of the die will make it slightly more likely for the hexagonal surface to be on the bottom after rolling.

3. Rolling Dynamics – It is unclear if the number and length of the edges will affect what happens when the die is rolled. It may be more likely to roll over on a small edge, but it is also possible that the friction of the surfaces or table may play a part. We really don’t know the effect of rolling dynamics because it likely depends upon the surface you are rolling on.

Net, net, the die is very close to being fair, but there appears to be a slight increase in the probability that a hexagonal edge will be face up (more so than the 57.1% theoretically expected). So we solved this dilemma by making sure that vowels were on hexagonal sides since you need vowels to make words.

Risks and challenges

The biggest risk will be product supply. We have identified several suppliers who are capable of producing the dice on a reasonable timetable, but the big assumption is that they will deliver when promised.
