About

We are the Chautauqua Poets & Writers, and we've been bringing literary giants to Southern Oregon venues and classrooms for 20 years.

Our amazing founding board passed the torch to us earlier this year, and we're launching a new 2020 program with poet Joy Harjo, the newly crowned US Poet Laureate. We're thrilled to continue the Chautauqua vision of bringing diverse voices to our community.

With the success of our Kickstarter campaign, we will also bring to Medford in October 2020 the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Timothy Egan, a New York Times Contributing Op-Ed Writer,  who covers the environment, the American West and politics

Ms. Harjo, a Creek Indian and student of First Nation history, will share her poetry at an April 20, 2020 event in Medford, OR and will also meet with local high school students in two small group chats.

Upon receiving the Wallace Stevens award from the Academy of American Poets in 2015, Chancellor Alicia Ostiker said of Ms. Harjo, “Throughout her extraordinary career as poet, storyteller, musician, memoirist, playwright and activist, Joy Harjo has worked to expand our American language, culture, and soul... Harjo is rooted simultaneously in the natural world, in earth—especially the landscape of the American southwest—and in the spirit world. Aided by these redemptive forces of nature and spirit, incorporating native traditions of  prayer and myth into a powerfully contemporary idiom, her visionary justice-seeking art transforms personal and collective bitterness to beauty, fragmentation to wholeness, and trauma to healing.”

Author and New York Times Contributing Op-Ed writer Timothy Egan

Timothy Egan is the author of eight books. His ninth, A PILGRIMAGE TO ETERNITY, has just been published. This is a very personal book, an adventure on an ancient pilgrimage trail through the heart of Europe, the Via Francigena. It’s a journey, a family story, and a history of Christianity.

THE IMMORTAL IRISHMAN was a New York Times bestseller. His book on Edward Curtis, SHORT NIGHTS OF THE SHADOW CATCHER, was awarded the Carnegie Award for best nonfiction. His account of the Dust Bowl,  THE WORST HARD TIME,  won the 2006 National Book Award, considered one of the nation’s highest literary honors, and he was featured prominently in the 2012 Ken Burns film on the Dust Bowl.

A lifelong journalist, Mr. Egan now writes an online opinion column for The New York Times.  Prior to that, Mr. Egan worked as a national correspondent for the Times, roaming the West.  As a Times correspondent, he shared a Pulitzer Prize in 2001 with a team of reporters for its series, “How Race is Lived in America.”

Chautauqua Poets & Writers is a 501c3 nonprofit organization and your contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Our rewards include opportunities to meet our visiting artists, reserve front row seats to our special events, and be in the know as we continue to seek out the very best writers and poets to share with our community.

And whom do I call my enemy? An enemy must be worthy of engagement

I turn in the direction of the sun and keep walking

It's the heart that asks the question, not my furious mind.

The heart is the smaller cousin of the sun.

It sees and knows everything.

It hears the gnashing even as it hears the blessing.

The door to the mind should only open from the heart.

An enemy who gets in risks the danger of becoming a friend.

- Joy Harjo. This Morning I Pray for my Enemies

Risks and challenges

As with any performance by a visiting solo artist, there is always the risk that severe weather, illness, or the quirks of the airline industry will interfere with scheduled events. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, the event will be rescheduled and our audience will be notified.
