What extra money?
I understand it looks like a huge pot of cash. It is a lot of money!
Whether you are a creator or a backer, it is important to keep in mind that a percentage of every dollar pledged is already spoken for. About 10 percent in fees goes to Kickstarter and Amazon for hosting and processing credit card payments. About another 35 percent goes to taxes. The IRS considers the money raised to be income going to the creator. Additionally, in this campaign, a percentage of the total funds received is paid to the artists as a royalty. At this point, more than half the money pledged is gone.
Then there is the shipping. This is a huge portion of the expenses, and much larger than most creators expect. Domestic shipping may be included in all the rewards, but it isn't free to us. Packaging and labels cost. Ink to print the labels cost. Postage rates have gone up in the last few months. There are also costs in administrating the business and legal end of things and creating the kickstarter campaign itself that seem to creep in.
Everything offered in this kickstarter camapign is being paid for, nothing is being donated. You get an original piece of art or a cedar box, the artist is getting paid.
All these expenses haven't even touched on the actual cost of manufacturing and getting the decks shipped to us.
The goal was to get this deck printed and offer it for a reasonable amount. And with your help, we've managed to do that!
