For information about the Amanda Palmer Tarot after the kickstarter ends, go to http://www.afptarot.com for updates of the art from the deck and links to all the artists.
Once upon a time in a fan forum, an Amanda Palmer-inspired tarot card appeared. Soon, one card led to another and the deck began to grow. With the help of 78 talented artists and the blessing of Amanda, herself, the deck is finally completed and it is ready for layout and printing!
Each card is created by a different artist; a unique interpretation of the Rider-Waite tarot as seen through the lens of all things Amanda Palmer. This deck is a truly unique and beautiful collection of art from an impressive array of talented creatives and fans! The artists include photographers and illustrators, painters and sculptors working in a dizzying variety of media and techniques.
It is its own tiny, portable art show in a box!
The decks will be printed the traditional tarot size - 2.75" by 4.75" and will come packaged in a custom cardboard tuck box printed by the wonderful folks at Ad Magic, Inc.
update: At the suggestion of one of our most gracious backers, we are adding two new cards to the deck - BLANK CARDS! They will have the deck back and a border on the front but they will be blank so you can, perhaps, get an autograph on one and write a note to your sweetie other, if you are giving the deck as a gift. So it is now an 80 card deck!
The individual decks are priced at $45 which includes shipping within the USA. International pledges, add $15 for shipping.
NOTE: THE DECKS COME IN A CUSTOM CARDBOARD TUCK BOX
Since art is for everyone, any donation of $5 or more will receive a PDF file of a poster that displays the entire deck at a glance - no shuffling!
$80 level Reward: More Deck in a Box limited to 200. Made of a dark cedar with a cleaner design. Includes one Amanda Palmer Tarot deck in a custom tuck box.
also at the $80 level the original Deck in a Box:
The deck in the tuck box will be sent to you in a custom made cedar box with the deck back design laser-etched into the box lid. This box is handcrafted by etsy artisan, Deborah Ross aka AlaskaLaserMaid, especially for this kickstarter campaign. This reward is limited to 100, 1 box per backer.
The printing of this deck is limited to the number of decks backed in this kickstarter campaign.

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge of this project has already been accomplished! 78 artists have completed 78 beautiful, unique interpretations of the tarot! But that challenge has been met and the art is all ready to go. The vendors who will be printing up the deck and making the limit edition cedar boxes have already been lined up and are ready to go.
Here is where you come in, the $15,000 to get the deck printed. The cards are larger than a regular playing card deck and there are more cards - 78 instead of 52 - making this a more customized item. To get these decks printed, a minimum number of decks have to be ordered and $15,000 is the magic break even point that covers everything to get these decks produced: the cost of getting the deck printed and shipped to us, the cost of the custom cedar boxes, the packaging and shipping to you, the kickstarter and amazon fees and taxes and providing a small royalty paid to the artists who created all the gorgeous art for the deck.
Once the funding goal is reached, the work of setting up files to print the cards will commence and we will send this out to print the minute we receive the funding payments. This means the quicker the funding goal is reached, the quicker we can start getting to work on the layout of the files to be sent to the printer.

Are you going to be offering the 3-card and 5-card rewards in the specially design envelopes with custom AFP postage as add-ons?
The $15 3-card reward and $25 5-card rewards are not going to be offered as add-ons.
These rewards were created especially for fans that don't have the extra funds and can't afford the full deck. People with deep pockets can afford special things because they have the cash to spare. These rewards are designed specifically for those getting by on less but with hearts just as big. The exclusive designs for the envelopes and postage are a thank you to them for their support because even if you don't have the cash, you still are special.
But do not fret, we will be adding stretch goals for all the levels $45 and above so you will be getting extra swag as the campaign total grows!
Will there be any more of the limited edition cedar boxes available that were offered at the $80 level?
Unfortunately, no more of those boxes will be offered. They were limited to 100.
I am sorry you missed out. A lot of people did because they went so quickly!
They are artisan made so there really is a limit to the number that can be produced in a certain amount of time.
There is a second edition box, in dark cedar with a different design, limited to 200 boxes at the same reward level, $80.
Remember, you can change your reward at any time during the campaign if you prefer a new reward level that got added.
What extra money?
I understand it looks like a huge pot of cash. It is a lot of money!
Whether you are a creator or a backer, it is important to keep in mind that a percentage of every dollar pledged is already spoken for. About 10 percent in fees goes to Kickstarter and Amazon for hosting and processing credit card payments. About another 35 percent goes to taxes. The IRS considers the money raised to be income going to the creator. Additionally, in this campaign, a percentage of the total funds received is paid to the artists as a royalty. At this point, more than half the money pledged is gone.
Then there is the shipping. This is a huge portion of the expenses, and much larger than most creators expect. Domestic shipping may be included in all the rewards, but it isn't free to us. Packaging and labels cost. Ink to print the labels cost. Postage rates have gone up in the last few months. There are also costs in administrating the business and legal end of things and creating the kickstarter campaign itself that seem to creep in.
Everything offered in this kickstarter camapign is being paid for, nothing is being donated. You get an original piece of art or a cedar box, the artist is getting paid.
All these expenses haven't even touched on the actual cost of manufacturing and getting the decks shipped to us.
The goal was to get this deck printed and offer it for a reasonable amount. And with your help, we've managed to do that!
