Important update for carbon fiber orders

Hey lasciviously patient awesome backers, some good news, some bad.

TLDR;

Backers that ordered a ring with a carbon fiber inlay cover will be shipped a non carbon fiber ring as part of phase 2 and you will get a voucher for a free carbon fiber ring when they are available.

eTLDR; Basically we're as tired as you are of these delays so we're sending each backer who ordered a carbon fiber ring a non carbon fiber alternative. This means we can ship the majority of the remaining outstanding orders.

The details

Sorry for this update but we are having to make a pretty big decision about the carbon fiber rings. When the material arrived at the factory and we were able to run final tests, we discovered an issue where the fiber became so faintly visible, it was almost impossible to see any detail. This obviously doesn't match our initial prototypes or your expectations.

Here is a pic of what happened when we applied the clear coat. No clear coat on the left, clear coat applied on the right:

Clear coat is applied on the right showing lack of definition
Clear coat is applied on the right showing lack of definition

The reason for this is the material is slightly porous and as it is compacted by the weight of the clear coat, the material loses its 'depth' and therefore the contrast between light/dark.

There are no words that described the tone in both the UK and China when we made this revelation, it's devastating for us to have this awful gotcha at the final leg of our production. We're completely tired of delays now and we really want to get rings out to you guys so we can get feedback, improve the ring and release more awesome goodness.

For those who have ordered a ring with carbon fiber, we are proposing these steps

1) Backers that ordered black fiber & black inlay cover will have the choice to replace the black fiber inlay cover with black, white or transparent.

2) Backers that ordered black fiber and any other inlay cover color excluding black will have their black fiber inlay cover automatically changed to black.

3) Backers that ordered silver fiber & white inlay covers will have the choice to replace the silver fiber inlay cover with black, white or transparent.

4) Backers that ordered silver fiber and any other inlay cover excluding white will have their silver fiber inlay cover automatically changed to white.

5) Stealth bomber rings will be changing back to their original design of black metal with black inlays.

Here is a picture of each inlay cover for reference:

Moving forward

We will still begin phase 2 shipping on the 7th of march and hope to have it concluded in 2-4 weeks.

We will continue to develop a carbon fiber inlay material and our target goal is to have this available within a 6 month time period. Should we fail to hit our target goal of having the carbon fiber rings completed and ready to order within 6 months, you will still receive a voucher for a free ring from us.

What you need to do

If we need you to change your ring inlay choices we will email you within the next 24 hours to ask you which design you wish to chose from. We will only email you if we need to get a change from you, we will automatically be processing the majority of the changes required.

Please ensure you have added support@nfcring.com as a trusted contact in your email program. Please do not email us unless we email you requesting a change. We will use the email address you used on Kickstarter.

What we ask from you

As you are probably aware we are a small team working on this. Due to this happening we are going to have a thousand and one things to do over the coming days. If you have a question please pop over to the forum where there is a good chance your question will be answered quicker than through our support channels. We also invite you to vent any anger and frustration there, we'd do the same, the hope is that by going through both trials and tribulations together we're stronger as a community.

Finally we'd like to apologize for this change and the delays, it's been a brutal few months wrestling with this carbon fiber issue and we really do appreciate your patience on it. We listen when you tell us you want the ring in your hands, you wanted in your hands four months ago and so did we. With this being our very final delay in production (everything else is done and triple-tested we should begin shipping again from China on the 6th and with you within 2-4 weeks.

Thank you for being patient, we recognized how privileged we are to be able to bring this ring to you guys and we're truly grateful for your support.

Well, I just received my confirmation email and my order was reported incorrectly in the email.

I was among those who ordered the Black Fiber top in lay and a black bottom inlay. I chose transparent as a replacement a week ago. My confirmation email stated that I am now getting a black top/transparent bottom. I am hoping this is just a typo in the email as it should have been a transparent top/black bottom. :/

    2. Creator Kenji Yamasaki on March 8, 2014

      My first choice is
Normal (Classic) Ring in Titanium Normal Color Metal with a Black top inlay cover and a Black bottom inlay cover.
      and
I'll change inlay color to black from Fiber.

Is this choice the same as 'Black on Black(Stealth boomber)'?
If not, I want to change Ring body color to black like it.

    3. Creator Lachlan Pollock on March 7, 2014

If you haven't got it yet, Uladzimir, then it will be in the next phase of shipping.
In this update John states 'We will still begin phase 2 shipping on the 7th of march and hope to have it concluded in 2-4 weeks.'

    4. Creator Uladzimir Harabtsou on March 7, 2014

I hope, i see my ring. There are "Estimated delivery: Sep 2013". Now is March 2014. Where is my ring?

    5. Creator Lachlan Pollock on March 7, 2014

Cameron, Mark is right - if you had a Stealth Bomber then it was an automatic change. Better add a rule to stop that address going into junk though!

    6. Creator Mark Fisher on March 7, 2014

@ Cameron, you only need to make a choice if they send you another email with questions for you to answer, the 5 options are there just to tell you what will happen depending on what ring/s you originally chose. if you didn't get another email then your ring option will have been automatically changed :)

    7. Creator Cameron Brown on March 7, 2014

Email got sent into junk, so missed this 3 days ago. It's past your deadline, but my choice would be your recommended one of: "5) Stealth bomber rings will be changing back to their original design of black metal with black inlays." What would be the best things to do here? Just leave it assuming that the above change will be processed?

    8. Creator Lachlan Pollock on March 6, 2014

Jay, I reckon you might find that the way John does things is far removed from [insert evil corporate wannabe here], he's committed not just to developing the ring but also the community of users behind it.
He knows and understands that even the negatives are important to growth and are a part of the journey.
If you're not convinced that the forums are a good thing or that we'll stick to running them in a transparent and honest manner then that's ok, I wont fight you on that.
But do keep watching and notice that posts aren't disappearing and all queries are being answered openly and honestly.
If you do decide you're ready to participate then we'll be happy to have you, more people means more ideas!

Kickstarter pledge completion isn't far off and after that there'll be pre-orders and everything that follows.

    9. Creator Jay Quayle on March 6, 2014

Aye, I know the forums are 'staffed' by backers, but many other pre-order manufacturers also do the same.

I'm not saying NFC will heavily moderate the forum, just saying they can. And based on observations from other companies, as time goes on more and more people become upset and angry and need a place to vent. Moderators in my experience then delete the venting posts and that starts a cascade cycle... and things get much worse very rapidly.

I've personally moderated a series of forums (from MMO Champion to the SonicWarp Isis Adventure) and I've seen how quickly these things can turn when someone says something bad against the host.

I hope the NFC rings are released sooner rather then later but I'm just voicing a concern about the potential of the forum should shipping drag on...

    10. Creator Lachlan Pollock on March 6, 2014

Jay, the forum moderators are kickstarter pledges who aren't linked to the company in any way other than that. While some of the NFCRing team are there occasionally answering questions they are not doing the moderating.
As it stands here if you vaguely remember seeing something in the way back when or if you're just searching for info you basically have to go back to post 1 in each comment section, the main one and all the updates. And then you must read.
Even with all that there are a lot of repeat questions which just bump useful content further toward the bottom.
The forums have distinct sections, and a search feature, and active users who really do help other people and toss ideas back and forth.
I can also say without a shadow of doubt that comments aren't and wont be deleted. I've helped on forums before and that kind of behaviour is more than a little bit pointless. The absolute worst that happens is someone makes a personal attack on someone else and their thread gets locked.

You don't have to use the forums, but if you don't then you might be missing out.

    11. Creator Jay Quayle on March 5, 2014

I cannae even remember what ring I ordered it was that long ago, but I've received no email so I can only assume it wasn't a carbon fiber ring....

.... but on that basis I still haven't received my ring either.

On another point, I'm not a fan of the constant pushing to use the NFC Ring forum. It's not that active, it adds an additional step that I must do for communication plus I'm not a fan that it's your forum (thus moderated).

I'm not saying that you will, but I have seen far too many forums by manufacturers who just simply delete comments they don't like (*cough cough Butterfly Labs cough cough*). At least here, the process is pretty transparent for all to see.

    12. Creator Memnoch on March 4, 2014

@Tom Lehman: I had the same issue using Firefox...worked fine in IE.

    13. Creator Tom Lehman on March 4, 2014

I received the email and went through to the choice page. I selected the choice and clicked on Submit Choice and nothing happened except it repositions to the top of the page. I have no idea whether the choice went through. Like others, I'm impressed with the hard work you are doing to make this work out. I'm sure it is quite frustrating.

    14. Creator James Cassidy on March 3, 2014

Oh Carbon, i long for you! In the meantime, the changed ring offer along with a second one later on? That's a wonderful way to look after those affected. Kudos there!

While i would love the carbon as much as everyone else you can only do so much, thanks to the whole team for all your hard work! As backers, we all appreciate it!

    15. Creator Memnoch on March 3, 2014

@Michael Blackwell: Thanks for that. I did it again in IE & got the popup, something in Firefox was blocking it.

    16. Creator Mike Pak on March 3, 2014

Thanks so much for the update. It has been a frustrating journey for many of us, but I very much appreciate the work you guys have been putting to release a quality product, esp. with the enormous amount of pressure to get it out ASAP. I agree with this decision and I just hope the issues with the carbon fiber can be resolved. It doesn't sound like an easy issue. My stealth bomber ring would have been nice, but I do like the black on black as well, so I'll still wait with anticipation. You guys are doing a great job, and I'll be sure to spread the word about it when I get to play with it myself :)

    17. Creator Michael Blackwell on March 3, 2014

      @Bill F. - I got a little pop-up window with a "Yay... successful " and some other comments.

Good luck guys, I'm pretty happy with the way you are handling this, much better than other projects I've been involved.

    18. Creator Memnoch on March 3, 2014

I got my email this morning...I hope my choice went through cause there is no indication after you click the button....no ok, no thank you.

    19. Creator Lachlan Pollock on March 3, 2014

FYI you should be getting inlay change emails if it's applicable to you, giving you a choice of white/black/transparent. Just pick the one you want on the web page the email takes you to and click the button!
(My silver carbon/white just became transparent/white and my other one went from black carbon/black to transparent/black).

    20. Creator Raymond Leung on March 3, 2014

Thanks for letting us in the loop. Keep it up!

    21. Creator Christina on March 3, 2014

      Thanks John!

      - Will the stealth bomber have 2 black inlays then? If so, how will we tell the difference? Will one be shorter than the other, e.g.?

      - Will the silver inlay be an option?

    22. Creator Ben Slater on March 3, 2014

Cool :-) all part of the journey...

    23. Creator Lachlan Pollock on March 3, 2014

That didn't come out right... I meant put 'ADDRESS CHANGE - ELROY MANNING' in the subject field. Just make it noticeable and obviously not a panic email from the latest update.

    24. Creator Lachlan Pollock on March 3, 2014

      @Elroy...
If you've changed address then you need to let them know, support@nfcring.com
Be aware that they are getting pounded at that email address, use your registered email and put address change + name in the subject field as well as in the email body.

    25. Creator elroy manning on March 2, 2014

Help I've moved since you sent out address requests!! Please pm me for new address!

    26. Creator Lachlan Pollock on March 2, 2014

@Mike, I reckon the best way to help John and the team out when you get your rings is to show them to _everyone_ and send him some more sales when they see how cool the Ring is. That and be active in the community! Join the forum everyone and speak up about the things you want to do or see happen! http://forum.nfcring.com

@John McLear a.k.a "Chief unicorn tattooist" - Okie Dokie. :)

    28. Creator MF Calub on March 2, 2014

Hehehe. Thanks for the update and thinking outside the box to honor your commitments. We really appreciate your efforts and openness. As far as all my projects, you guys are the only ones who actually did a video personally updating and apologizing for the delays. I greatly appreciate that. It's not easy starting up a business so I understand. Keep up the great customer relationship mindset.

    29. Creator Mike Craddock on March 2, 2014

Can you afford to be giving away free rings? I can't image they are cheap and I know kickstarter margins are thin to begin with. With kickstarter projects I enjoy more seeing the process then the final products, these updates are tough to write, but great to read on how business actually run. Thanks for all the hard work, keep it up.

    30. Creator Al Linke on March 2, 2014

      Appreciate the transparency, thanks

    31. Creator Elizabeth Hansen on March 2, 2014

Thank you for keeping us updated! Thank you for all your hard work!

    32. Creator Osman EL-BABA on March 2, 2014

Thank you John for the update and taking tough decisions ... With you all the way... Take your time

    33. Creator Lachlan Pollock on March 2, 2014

You're right, Oli. Best kickstarter ever in terms of communication and problem solving.

    34. Creator Oli Wright on March 2, 2014

Consistent strong comms, actual attempts to solve problems and owning issues? Ah ... faith in Kickstarter slowly returning. Thanks guys and good luck. Must be gutting to hit this hurdle.

    35. Creator Stefan HEIN Richter on March 2, 2014

      Agree with Brendon Davis
      ;)

    36. Creator Chris Hawkins on March 2, 2014

Sad to not be receiving a carbon ring (at least not for 6 months) but appreciate the decision you guys have taken. Couldn't have been an easy (or cheap) one to do.

    37. Creator Matthew Critchley on March 2, 2014

Thanks for the Update, and the hard work of the whole team :)

    38. Creator Mark Fisher on March 2, 2014

Thats cool :) they all look amazing! looking forward to my delivery ;)

    39. Creator Bob Bryden on March 2, 2014

      Hey John

Thank for the update, you have had some bad luck but it's amazing the way you've all pulled through to get (what I hope) will be a fantastic product just right. I'm excited to see the finish product!!

    40. Creator John McLear on March 2, 2014

      @Mark Yea. :)

    41. Creator Mark Fisher on March 2, 2014

@ John, sorry I should have mentioned that, I've got 2 stealth bombers and an alpha with silver carbon/transparent, so I guess I'll get 2 all black stealths and a white/transparent Alpha?

    42. Creator John McLear on March 2, 2014

      @Mark Fisher
Depends what you ordered in the collection.. If all 3 were fiber they will all be changed.. However if you ordered say T-B-W, T-B-WO, B-BF-B only the B-BF-B will change to B-B-B.. Hope that makes sense..

    43. Creator Mark Fisher on March 2, 2014

If we ordered the collection (3 rings) do we get 3 standard colour rings or just the 1?

    44. Creator Tim S on March 2, 2014

Yep thats about the gist of it Manfred

    45. Creator Manfred Radlwimmer on March 2, 2014

So basically everyone who ordered a carbon inlay will receive a different ring first but for free and the carbon one when its available, everyone else will get what they wanted immediately?
      Sounds good to me.

    46. Creator Brendan Davis on March 2, 2014

Thank you for your continued honesty and I'll wait. Thanks for the starter ring.
