McDowell Time is a flourishing watch company based in Rockville, MD, USA. After the successful Kickstarter release of our first watch, The DelRay, we introduced the Sonoma. Recognizing that it was not up to our company standards, we pulled the Sonoma from Kickstarter to rework it. This newly modified design became our latest offering, The Maxton.
The Maxton draws its name from the Maxton Mile in North Carolina, a land speed track that resided on an abandoned army airbase. The mile long timing track allowed racers to push their cars to the limit and achieve the quickest time over that distance. This need for measurable speed inspired us to create the Maxton chronograph. When using the tacheymeter function of the bezel, you need to know a standard measure of distance. Hence, we felt that Maxton, being exaclty one mile long, was the perfect namesake for our watch.
We love admiring the distinct details of vintage chronographs, and we think one of the coolest features are textured subdials. The grooves of the subdials bring a depth to the watch face, plus they create a unique look as light reflects in a dynamic pattern.
We LOVE a nice bright lume on a watch, so that's why we chose C3 Super-LumiNova, one of the brightest options available.

We wanted a departure from the traditional round watch, so we designed a custom cushion case that measures 39MM. This in-house design was made using CAD software and a 3D printer. Being able to have this technology allowed us to continuously tweak the model until we knew it was perfect. Many hours and prototypes later, the Maxton was born.
As a Kickstarter backer you can decide which case finish you prefer to have: either Brushed Stainless Steel or PVD Black Coated Stainless Steel.
We had a lot of options available when determining what type of bezel to use, but we knew it had to be ceramic. Ceramic bezels are known for their durability and scratch resistance, especially when compared to steel or aluminum. Also, ceramic bezels have a wonderful shine that really sets them apart, plus makes the watch stand out.
The Maxton is powered by an ISASWISS 8371D quartz movement which combines the accuracy of a quartz watch, but also the mechanized feel of a more expensive mechanical movement. Pushing the buttons gives a positive feedback, just like a vintage chronograph, you can feel that 'click'. The chronograph hand moves at 5 beats per second which helps give the appearance of having a smooth sweep instead of a one-second tick like traditional quartz watches.
This strap is lightly padded & fully leather lined, which helps make the strap feel like butter from the moment you put it on your wrist. Finished off with a classic contrast stitch, this strap is available in Black or Honey Brown.
We took a long time searching for the perfect strap to pair with the Maxton, and once we found the 3-Hole Rally from B&R we had a winner! Located in New York, B&R Bands is a leading provider of quality replacement watch bands & straps who take pride in delivering a premium product at an affordable price.
The buttery feel of this strap is brought to you by Horween Leather, one of Americas oldest leather tanneries. Located in Chicago, Horween continues to hand process all leather using the same methods from when they started business in 1905. Horween uses native hides for the best grain and yields, premium grade oils, dyes, and retanning agents. They are the exclusive supplier of leather for National Football League footballs and National Basketball Association basketballs.
Risks and challenges
Having already created & successfully funded our first watch, The DelRay, we know what it takes to run a smooth Kickstarter campaign. We shipped watches on time while delivering a high-quality timepiece that exceeded expectations.
The Maxton is engineered and ready to produce. This is not a rendering or theoretical design, but a real working watch that is ready to be built. At the completion of this campaign, we will begin production immediately, with no time wasted toward final design.
We have a very tight working relationship with the factory and we stand by our watches. In fact, The Maxton comes with a 2 Year Warranty. That's right! If the watch has any mechanical issues, we will take care of the repair for free within two years of purchase.
The McDowell Time Maxton is hand-assembled in the United States of America, something we are very proud to say.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
