All Reese Eddings, captain of the private trading vessel, the TMS Earthrise, wants is to make an honest living, preferably without too much excitement (read: ways to incur more repair bills). But when someone calls in a debt from her past, she finds herself embroiled not just in the break-up of a sector-wide slave ring, but in the problems of the Eldritch, a xenophobic race known to almost no one. Her entree into this world? Hirianthial Sarel Jisiensire, one of the few Eldritch to leave the homeworld for the Alliance's broad spaces. Through him, she finds herself hip-deep in politics, conflict... even war.
Reese and Hirianthial are the instruments by which the Queen of the Eldritch will transform her world. But what will that transformation look like? And will they survive it?
So this book. What's it got? Let's see. Grumpy merchant captains. A motley crew of fluffy cats, alien furry volleyballs, giant inscrutable birds and funky centaur chemists! Gallant military heroes! Space elves! Romance! Adventure! Even a nude scene in a closet (not very erotic, alas, but that's what you get when you mix up slavers and pirates with honest, law-abiding folk).
If I have not shaken enough exclamation points at you, here's another: readers were very enthusiastic when I serialized this novel on my blog! I want to bring out an e-book and print edition, though, thus this Kickstarter.
So What Are You Paying For?
For the amazing artwork, by award-winning artist Julie Dillon, and for an elegant and beautifully crafted print layout by my graphic designer, Dave Bryant of CatspawDTP. I cannot shovel enough money into these deserving people's arms, so I am enlisting your aid. They are well worth it!
I should note (probably unnecessarily) that our price tag here is not actually enough to pay either of them... my intent is to patch enough of my business account's wounds that I can continue on to the next project. If we overfund, that money will go toward a full and complete healing, a resurrection of the account that will require wine and celebration! I don't expect that to happen, but every little bit helps. :)
So part of the money stays with me for Kickstarter/Amazon fees, taxes, and to pay for prizes/administrative overhead. The rest I will use to pay to my loyal freelancers. Your one contribution will be helping three independent artists. Warm fuzzies all around!
Not Convinced? Read the First Few Chapters!
I serialized the entire book on my website, and for a while I was fairly diligent about archiving it. Paging back through the entirety of it (all 71 posts) on my site's a bit of a bear, and only slightly easier on Livejournal, but you can certainly do so! Or you can browse what I put up on the archive site. I haven't double-checked that site for accuracy though, and some of the later episodes had transfer problems that I have been too busy to look into. But it should give you a good idea if Earthrise is for you!

Risks and challenges
To be honest, I have done this print/e-book rigamarole already so many times that I've got a nice smooth process for it. (Have a look at my profile here: http://www.kickstarter.com/profile/mcahogarth/created. You can see the books I've already launched via Kickstarter!)
If I had to choose a challenge, then, it's re-writing Books 2 and 3 fast enough to get them into the hands of my readers! They exist as very rough drafts, and I want to bring them up to date in time to put them out by early 2014. Both. At the same time! But sooner would be better, if I can finish the projects currently on my plate first.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
