What would it be like to live in a world where you knew your place? Where you had one? Where you were born wanted and valued, and your talents and personality and heart's desires were studied until you were understood and given work that meant something to you? These questions--and the society they implied--were the subject of my first two web serials, The Aphorisms of Kherishdar and its companion, The Admonishments of Kherishdar. I asked for funding for those two serials and posted in response to the level of tips I received. Readers were so enthusiastic that had the Science Fiction Writers of America recognized direct funding for membership criteria, I would have qualified several times over... an average of 6-12 cents a word for 50 stories. Since then, both books have gone to print, e-book and recently audiobook versions.
Black Blossom is the sequel to these collections, and where the first two were delicate volumes of two-page shorts, brief trips into Kherishdar, Black Blossom is a 450+ page novel, a full-on expedition into an alien culture as narrated by the Calligrapher, the main character of the Aphorisms. After over a year, the serialization of the book is done... and it's time to release it as an e-book and print book...and if we go over goal, an unabridged audiobook.
This Kickstarter will be paying for production costs, including payment to editorial and layout professionals; advertising and distribution monies; cover art and time/project management fees.
Stretch Goals and Prizes
Since my last three Kickstarters went over goal (some rather significantly...!), I'm planning in advance for stretch goals and prizes.
Goals: At $2500, I'll be able to do an unabridged audiobook version of the story! This is particularly awesome because the narrator who's done the first two (much shorter volumes) is willing to do the third, and by now most of us think of him as the voice of Kherishdar. And at $3000, I'll be able to pay for a voiceover for a book trailer, too.
Prizes: If we hit our target, I will publish (and give all backers an e-copy) of an unpublished story intended for the original Aphorisms volume!
If we hit $2000, I will publish serially (and give all backers an e-copy of) a "cut-scene" from near the end of the book, the conversation that happened between the Emperor and the lord, his lovers, and his Decoration.
At $2500, I publish serially (and give all backers a free e-copy of) a 22-page cut scene; in this case, the fade-to-black between Kor and Ajan (it is entitled "That Kiss" and is romance with some intimation of erotica).
If we go over $3000, I will illustrate a scene from "That Kiss" and post it for everyone to enjoy! And if we hit $3500, I will read "That Kiss" during a livestream (and blush all the while).
Please note: if you are an international backer requesting one of the print books, you will have to pay extra for shipping. I'll have a FAQ on how much once we launch. My last book of approximately the same size cost me $35 per international package, so I would expect along the same lines.
Curious but not sure if you want in? Why not have a glance at the novel? The serialized version remains online for browsing. Check it out, see if it's your bowl of tea.
Immersion in an alien world. If you're willing to pack for the trip, I hope you'll join us.
