Many Deep Thanks!

Dearest Backers,

We just finished our shows, and I ran up here to write to you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Spoon River was a huge success and it is thanks to you. I cannot express the gratitude enough for each of you parting with your hard earned dollars to make this happen. If I could personally come to your house right now and give you a hug, I would. Here are a few highlights

  • 4 weeks of rehearsal. (8 total rehearsal per cast member) 20 cast members, 40 monologues, 3 songs, 5 instruments.
  • Students music directing themselves
  • Over 270 people attended
  • On coming up to my office, I was told the show was "really moving and thought provoking".
  • A cast member said "Thank you for introducing me to this family".

I could go on and on about the little moments (like the boys doing their makeup) that made this such a fun and exciting experience. But most of all, it was about providing an opportunity, a platform, for 20 artists to tell stories. I talked with the cast before we open and explained that even if only 30 people came, it was a success because we got to be creative for our Creator. What an honor and privilege. Thank you for helping be  a part of that. Below are a few blurry pics from our show. Your names were brought to the attention of the audience. They know it was because of YOU this happened. Thank you, Lindsey

Thank you for helping make this all possible! Lindsey

Wow.... so we just met our goal a few minutes ago. I cannot express how humbled, grateful and blessed I feel. We have 25 backers right now, and I feel like I would love to be able to personally come to each of your houses to express to each one of you what this means.

Art is hard. It's not free. It takes work and persistence and a lot of tenacity. But our God is a creative God. He loves to tell stories. He's ignited that gift and passion in 20 unique students. They completely inspire me. And they are storytellers. I've been pretty honest with them about some of our challenges. It doesn't phase them. It ignites them. They want to tell stories. So on a Thursday night on Oct 4th, with a month of rehearsals, that's what we are going to do. Is it going to be perfect? Probably not. But is it going to be a brand new opportunity to allow 20 students to express their creative and God given gifts? Yes. Is is worth it? Totally.

Thank you for being a part of this journey. If you haven't yet donated and would like to support the students, please consider doing so. Any additional funding will go into the drama account for future opportunities. And to our 25 supporters...... Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. This could not have happened without you, We hope you are able to join us on Oct 4th. Lindsey

Taking the Risk

I have studied many times The marble which was chiseled for me-- A boat with a furled sail at rest in a harbor. In truth it pictures not my destination...But my life. For love was offered me and I shrank from its disillusionment; Sorrow knocked at my door, but I was afraid; Ambition called to me, but I dreaded the chances. Yet all the while I hungered for meaning in my life. And now I know that we must lift the sail And catch the winds of destiny Wherever they drive the boat. To put meaning in one's life may end in madness, But life without meaning is the torture Of restlessness and vague desire-- It is a boat longing for the sea and yet afraid.

This is one of my favorite stories from Spoon River. I love it because it shows the regret from not taking life by the hand and embracing it for all its worth. Don't be afraid of risks, embrace them. Failure, success, pleasure, pain, fear, hope, joy, all help provide us meaning in life. To not engage is to miss out on the spectrum that life can provide us. It's is only by taking chances that we discover who we are and what we are made of.

So we are....taking a risk that is. 30 days. 1 show. Risky? Sure, but that's what  keeps life interesting.

First Rehearsal

Wow! Is there something magical about hearing a script out loud for the first time. We haven't even dived into characters or development, and already they are taking on their own lives and starting to live and breathe. And with each person doing multiple roles, it's so cool to see the variety of performance!

It's so interesting to me, this concept of Spoon River. What will be on your tombstone? What 10 words will people use to describe your life? What will be the most important things you wish you could have made the world understand, and what would you have said to them if given the chance? What what legacy are you leaving behind.

We have 19 students, from freshmen to seniors and all sorts of majors. Some are good friends, some have never met. Some have a resume bigger than mine (for sure!) and some have never been on stage. We have musicians and singers and students who were raised in other countries. It's a good mix. It's electric. And with everyone of them- there is a common theme. They want to be storytellers. They want to take what God has given them and be creative. It's infectious. It's energetic. It's inspiring. It makes me want to be a better teacher. A better director. A better storyteller. We want you to be a part of that. Help us tell stories. :) - Lindsey
