Created by Rachel Owens, a mother, avid runner and inventor, the mBand ring delivers personal protection and freedom from worry. Just touch the ring's Bluetooth-connected button and the mBand app sends an alert with your exact GPS location to our emergency response center, where professionals are standing by 24/7 to dispatch police.
For even more community protection, your location is also sent simultaneously to a group of your pre-selected contacts - friends, family members, coworkers or whoever you choose.
Even when you can’t stay where you are, the mBand app continues to report your location as you move - in real time - until help arrives.
mBand was created to empower independent women and the people who love them. When you support this project, you're also supporting our mission to help make the world safer for women. For every 10 donations we receive from Kickstarter backers, we'll donate an mBand ring with one year of professional monitoring to local organizations dedicated to ending violence against women. Our organizational partners, including the Time to Fly Foundation, the Center for Anti-Violence Education and the Fresh Start Women's Foundation, will distribute mBand rings to at-risk women in their networks.
The mBand ring is unique among women's safety products because you can activate it instantly with just one finger of one hand. Other devices require you to reach for a dongle or pull out your phone and initiate a series of actions to get help in an emergency.
With mBand, a call for help is just one button-push away, no matter where your hands are. When every second counts, only mBand alerts both law enforcement and your community contacts without giving an attacker time to interfere.
Though it takes only a simple push of a button to get the help you need, mBand is almost impossible to activate accidentally. Our Failsafe trigger technology and 30-second cancellation option ensure that mBand won't send an alert unless you want it to.
mBand is much more than wearable security. It promotes independence and delivers confidence and peace of mind to students, runners, bikers, hikers, mothers, daughters, partners and any woman who travels for work or pleasure.
With mBand, you're never really alone.
Pricing and Setup Options
To thank you for your support, we're offering Kickstarter backers the opportunity to own mBand for up to $55 less than its anticipated retail selling price. (mBand will sell for about $180 with professional monitoring and about $130 without monitoring when it begins shipping to the general public later this year.)
To maximize its effectiveness, we recommend that you set mBand to alert both police (via our emergency response center) and your pre-selected contacts in an emergency. But how you choose to use it is up to you. You can configure mBand to alert both police and your community contacts, only your community contacts or only local police.
- mBand 24/7: With this option, one touch of the mBand ring sends an alert with your GPS location to both police and your community contacts. Professional monitoring is included for the first year with mBand 24/7. After that, our anticipated monitoring fee will be about $60 per year. You can also set mBand 24/7 to alert only local police in an emergency simply by declining the community contact setup option in the mBand app.
- mBand Community: With this option, you can send a text with your GPS location to your community contacts whenever you're in trouble. This service is free for purchasers of the mBand ring. If you choose the mBand Community option to start, you can upgrade to 24/7 professional monitoring and alert local police at any time for about $60 per year.
To make mBand a reality, our New York-based design and manufacturing team collaborated with an international group of extremely talented people, including component and app developers in Europe and Asia, and engineers and industrial designers in Rhode Island, Brooklyn and Manhattan.
mBand doesn't look like a wearable security product. It looks like a beautiful piece of jewelry - because it is. Our designers created a ring that's striking and sophisticated enough to wear every day - even without its security features.
Our New York team developed the core aesthetic for mBand and worked closely with Sara Bdeir of the Rhode Island School of Design to refine the ring's appearance and meet our production requirements, including waterproofing, alert triggering, component placement and an adjustable sizing solution that allows it to fit snugly on over 90 percent of all female hands in the United States.
To create mBand's functionality, we incorporated electronic components that were rugged enough to withstand the demands of vigorous use, and small enough to work within the tight confines of an elegant women’s ring. When we began the mBand project, the PCB (printed circuit board) we needed didn't yet exist.
Led by chief hardware engineer Alex Agafonov, our engineering team's signature accomplishment was the development of a unique flexible PCB, which we combined with an ultra-compact and long-lasting rechargeable battery, a new high-performance Texas Instruments chipset and the Bluetooth 4.0 protocol for smartphone communications.
We're thrilled to announce that we've developed a working prototype of both the ring and the mBand app. The next step is to fine-tune mBand for its first production run.
Prototyping is a painstaking process that requires a lot of trial and error. Working with our engineers and Milestone Studio, a multidisciplinary specialty design firm in Brooklyn, NY, our team began with 3D-printed models, which evolved into plastic and rubber prototypes and ultimately became finished mBand pre-production models in gold and silver.
To create the best experience for mBand users across smartphone operating systems, the mBand app is native to both the Apple iOS and Android OS platforms.
The design and functionality of the mBand app was the result of a close collaboration among our New York City, team led by mBand's inventor Rachel Owens, director of project management Matt Dujnic and graphic designers Stan Peresechansky and Ruth Sweeney. Working with chief app engineer Andras Kovi, the team delivered an elegant and intuitive companion to the mBand ring.
Building on Rachel Owens' working prototypes, we've created the next generation of both the ring and the mBand app with the latest technologies available and a sophisticated new design. Your support will allow us to incorporate mBand’s new design aesthetic into a small-batch production run for our beta testers. From there, we’ll fine-tune the ring and the app to create our first large production run for Kickstarter backers and the general public.
Rachel Owens, mBand's inventor, is an experienced product management and business operations professional. When she’s not working on mBand, she serves as the head of product management for TVSquared, a data analytics provider. Prior to that, she was VP of product management for PointRF Solutions, an IoT (Internet of Things) solutions provider. Rachel is thrilled to be partnering with the BrickHouse Security team to make mBand a reality.
BrickHouse Security is a premier manufacturer and supplier of personal safety and security solutions. BrickHouse has launched many products in our history, but none more important than mBand. Leveraging our experience in design, manufacturing, app development and professional emergency response monitoring, we are proud to be working with Rachel Owens to bring her vision to life. We hope that others will be as excited about mBand as we are.
Risks and challenges
Any time an innovative technology product is brought to market - especially a product that relies on precision components - there are inherent risks, mostly centered around manufacturing and quality control.
Fortunately, mBand’s partnership with BrickHouse Security mitigates most of those risks. BrickHouse is a universally respected security supplier with a 10-year history of successful technology manufacturing and product launches behind us. We're confident that BrickHouse’s resources and experience, coupled with our strong relationships with our suppliers, will enable us to meet our production goals.
There’s also the risk associated with the introduction and evolution of any smart product: the need to constantly improve and update the mBand app. In committing to evolving the app based on user feedback, we take on that risk.
Which brings us to our biggest challenge: making mBand the best product it can be for our users. When you become a backer, you become a member of our team - a member with a voice. We will be listening intently to the mBand community regarding every aspect of this product - from app development and functionality to aesthetic choices. Incorporating input from mBand users is a challenge we gladly accept.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
