Hello, I'm Middle Aged Artist, Christopher Albert
I'm here to ask for your support for a project that is not only personally significant for me, but it's one that addresses those universally felt themes of experiencing the passage of time and maturing into one's own voice.
I'm planning a self organized residency for myself and I'm seeking funds to help with travel, accomodations (including workspace) and material expenses for a three week long working session in Geneva, Switzerland.
Ok, so why Geneva?
Well, 20 years ago, as a 20 year old, I traveled to Geneva and spent several months there in which I met a cadre of local artists, roamed the streets, sketching nearly everything I could see and essentially having my young art-student mind pried open to new possibilities. The residue of that moment in that place has never dissolved and the influence of that time lives on for me as an artist - even to today.
It's that influence that I will, in part, explore on this adventure marking the 20 years that have passed.
So, What's the object of this residency?
The object is to create a new body of work and accompanying documentation that together amounts to a multi-media memoir. One which will pay tribute to and focus on the moments, places and people I encountered as a 20 year old artist, and will soon do again as a 40 year old artist. Essentially, the vision and sensibilities of the 20 year old will meet those of the 40 year old.
The passage of time and the symmetry of a long overdue return are recurring themes within all traditions of storytelling. For many, the re-visitation of those places and moments of our past takes place in the landscape of our memory. This project presents a platform on which the veracity of that remembered landscape can be tested and challenged - through the media of drawing, painting, the merging of audio and video material....and possibly through sculptural forms too.
Now this is not simply a retrospective endeavor. It's very much a generative one. The reality of the present moment and this now much older artist being in that remembered place will offer up an entirely new landscape of experiences and visuals. I will bend every moment of this session in Geneva toward creating a new body of work - one that will mine the present for those points of reflection and inspiration on which my work relies. That I'll be doing this all in a location that, for me, resides in that mist of an exalted memory sets the stage for clashes of the remembered, the assumed and the actual - and MAN, is that ever a recipe for some Damn Deep Artmaking! For sure.
Ok. Fair enough, but what can be expected to come out of this project?
Well, I expect a lot of new work to come out of this residency. Given the open-ended way in which I work, I can't say what that work will look like or exactly what form it will take. However, in addition to the rockin' new body of work I'll create in Geneva, there will be 3 tangible components Guaranteed to be born out of this project and will be available EXCLUSIVELY to my kickstarter backers:
1. A full color, magazine-style publication that documents the artwork and experiences from this session in Geneva and it will also include images of the artwork I made there 20 years ago.
2. DVD featuring audio and video footage from Geneva including interviews with artists and other fascinating folks I encounter. Segments of the audio will be featured in an upcoming episode of the art related podcast I co-produce and co-host, The Dead Hare Radio Hour.
3. Oversized, hardcover reproductions of both the 11"x14" sketchbook I kept 20 years ago and a sketchbook of the same size I'm currently working in which coincides with the dates of the original. Together, these constitute a piece I'm calling Parallel Livres.
So, on to the demonstrations of my gratitude -- The Rewards:
The magazine, DVD and sketchbooks mentioned above are available as rewards at different levels of support, and so will be examples of the actual work created in Geneva. Additional rewards listed to the right include:
The Elliptical Drawings
The Elliptical Drawings are 5"x8" drawings made while working out on the elliptical machine at the gym. - Why yes. I do work out - Available on a first come first serve basis, you can have your choice of these drawings that cull imagery and text from whatever catches my eye on the television, rendered in a manner that results from trying to keep my heart rate at about 120 beats per minute.
A special numbered Swiss edition of the Missive postcards I make and send to folks through the mail. These postcards will be collaged in Switzerland using photos taken in there - way back then and on the coming trip - and mailed to you from Geneva.
The Happy Ending level ($1500 or more) gets you to a visit from me at your home - wherever that may be within the Contintenal US, where will I will regale you and your friends with details of my Geneva residency, complete with audio/visual aids. No dusty vacation slide show/home movie viewing sessions here....I'll do my best to give you the flavor and vibe of the whole experience in a fun, lively - non-coma inducing way... Let's make a night of it.
I, Chris & Thee
At this level ($5,000 or more) you can claim naming rights to an entire year's worth of my studio production. If it comes out of my studio during that year, you can name it. It's the perfect gift for that business or corporation you love which would love to get it's name aligned with some high minded, down home art. Or, it's even a chance to express your own poetic instincts by overlaying the fruits of my labor with your own creative impulses - it'll be our own extended collaboration!
In addition to crediting all supporters in all project documentation, I will gladly make a phone call to every backer to express my thanks personally.
Remember, this project will only be funded if I'm able to reach my goal. Now, I'll be going to Geneva one way or another, but your support now will allow me to maximize the outcome of this endeavor in the form of the work I'll be able to produce and the documentation I'll be able to create. Plus, I would love to share this experience and the fruit born from it with you. So I thank you now for your consideration, and please feel free to share this project with your friends.
I will be posting material - stories, remembrances etc.- relating to this adventure on my blog, chrisalbert.blogspot.com, so be sure to check that out. Also, if you have any questions about this kickstarter campaign and what I'm doing, please shoot me an email at info[at]christopheralbert[dot]com or contact me through this kickstarter page
