This expansion for Viceroy supplies your pyramid of power with fastidious aristocrats and shady underworld figures. You will earn precious diamonds and fend of invading monsters. This expansion actually consists of three separate expansion modules all in one box, as well as revised law cards for the base game and new game modes for one and two players.
This is NOT your standard expansion that adds a few cards and some simple mechanics, we are talking all new cards sure, lots of new character cards in the Aristocrat expansion module, but the Invasion Expansion Module introduces monsters which attack on the 3rd, 7th and 11th rounds which have dire consequences should this threat be ignored. The Dungeon expansion module is our favorite; it allows players to build downward into the dark recesses of the Viceroy world, building BELOW your pyramid during the 2nd phase of each turn, but coming at some steep costs to your overall achievements. This literally turns the game on its head and makes for an even more fulfilling experience as you have the extra options you crave while trying to fend off the negative impact of going into the darkness too deeply.
- Card Quality & Color: We are making this game at the same factory as all our print runs of this game so the card quality and color will be identical to the base game! We know how important this is to all the loyal fans of Viceroy that have been begging for a meaningful expansion!
- Artwork & Design: We haven't compromised a thing on the art or development of this expansion, which is why it has been so long in coming. The artwork is all from the Berserk world, just as the base game, and the designer of the original game (Yuri) did some serious development to get this just right!
- Advanced Copy: You are getting this at least 2-3 weeks ahead of the street date for stores/distributors. There is no other way to get this ahead of time.
- Discount off MSRP: The expansion will retail for $25-$30 but you are getting it for a significant discount by helping this expansion to become a reality on Kickstarter.
- Stretch Rewards: We have a ton of great stretch rewards lined up, check further down on the campaign details to see what we have in store!
- Special Offers Post-Campaign: As a backer we will give you access to special upgrades and offers not available any other way.
- Base Game Upgrade #1: Revised Rules for Solo and 2-player variants.
- Base Game Upgrade #2: Replacement Law Cards (replacing cards #66, 67, 68 and 72).
- Base Game Upgrade #3: Domain Cards added and starting hand rules modified.
The box size will be the same as the original game as there is A LOT of content here and we wanted to give owners of the original game the option of using this new box to replace your old box should you want to!
This expansion comes with three modules: Aristocrats, Invasion, and Underworld. See how to play all three below:
The first module, Aristocrats, contains 12 new character cards. All these cards have no reward on the 1st level (you get usual reward when you place them on level 2 and up) but they have an additional reward instead of colored sections at the bottom. These characters are shuffled to the deck. The module also contains 4 new Laws designed to work well with aristocrats.
The second module, Invasion, contains Enemy cards of three levels, 4 Battle cards (one for each player) and 4 thematic laws. The Enemy cards form the Invasion forces that attack the players’ domains on 3rd, 7th, and 11th turns. Each force has four stacked Enemy cards that form four lines of costs and rewards, similar to the left side of the character cards. To fight off the attack, a player have to pay gems indicated in these lines, at least in the bottom line, but the more they pay the more the reward. Gems may be taken from behind the screen and/or from the player’s Battle card. When the players choose the same color during the auction they don’t discard the gems but place them on their Battle cards. The new Law cards interact with Enemy cards and Battle cards. If a player doesn’t repel the invasion the player gets a penalty card.
The third module, Dungeon, allows players to build their pyramid DOWNWARDS. There are Outlaw cards that form a separate deck. A player may draw an Outlaw card instead of gaining two gems. These cards are played in Phase 2, and should be placed under the first row of the pyramid. The cost for playing the Outlaw card is the Judgement tokens that contain different penalties such as negative VPs, negative modifiers or obligations to discard specific tokens. The unique rewards include relocating a Character card in the pyramid, gaining diamonds (wild gems) or dealing with Judgement tokens. There are also 4 thematic Law cards.
Full Rulebook HERE.
In this variant, two new multicolor auction cards from this expansion are used in place of usual four auction cards. Each new auction card features two colors instead of one. You may place the multicolor auction cards with any side up, but all four colors must be present. The large deck consists of 24 character cards. During the setup and after each auction only two character cards are revealed instead of four. During the auction, players choose between two auction cards (and not between four colors).
When bidding, a player may select any of two colors featured on the chosen auction card. If both players have chosen the same card (even if their gemstones are of different colors), they have to return the gemstones to the reserve without gaining cards, or agree who gets which card (if there are two cards next to the chosen auction card). When playing solo, use the same setup. You don’t need any virtual opponents, just discard the corresponding gemstones and gain the cards you wish. At the end of the game, gain 3 power points for each your sword token and 2 power points for each your shield token. These bonus points are in addition to the usual points you gain at the end of the game.
Important: In this variant, the law card # 69 adds two cards to the large deck instead of four.
NOTE: There are lots of other tested variants out there for Viceroy, we suggest you check them out HERE.
There are TONS of reviews for this game already out there, check out just a small sampling of reviews below or check out lots of video reviews HERE. Note the expansion has not been reviewed yet as it will not be released until August 2018. The designer and artwork is the same and the innovations in this expansion promise to only improve on this already excellent game! This has over 3,900 ratings on BGG HERE.
We will handle all add-ons post campaign through our Crowdox Survey, but there are a lot of add-ons planned including:
Shipping will all be handled post-campaign through our Crowdox.com survey. Shipping will vary by country but will be between $4 and $15 USD depending on the country for the expansion only and between $8 and $22 USD depending on the country for the expansion + base game. Multiple copies will incur no extra shipping charges! We will also offer upgrades for shipping in a box and for tracking numbers as we have done on prior projects.
Yes the default shipping method for shipping will be via bubblemailer. That means you COULD get a dented box, though the odds are against that happening. Less than 5% of backers getting bubblemailers report damage in prior campaigns. If you prefer to get your rewards in a box rather than in a bubble mailer that will add between $2 and $6 to your shipping costs worldwide. We have found that less than 5% of our backers want to pay extra for a box, but you are welcome to if that is your wish.
All our USA backers will get a tracking number with their shipment (delivery confirmation via USPS or tracking number via Fedex Ground depending on your rewards). Non-USA backers will be shipped directly from our fulfillment center in DongGuan, China for the expansion and will not have a tracking number on the package, though you can add a tracking number for $1-$2 depending on where we are shipping to. Any non-USA backer getting a base game will have all their rewards shipped from the USA directly. All of these options will be available through the CrowdOx add-ons and the process is very straightforward.
We've had a lot of previous successful Kickstarter projects in the past. You'd think by now that we'd be set and not need to run such a project any more, right? Well, not so much. While Mayday has been successful, we're still very small and our cash is tied up in other projects. In fact, if you look at Mayday's early publishing history, we introduced just three new games in 2010 and 2011 before we discovered Kickstarter.
Since utilizing Kickstarter, we've launched 40 campaigns, making us one of the most experience KS campaign creators ever, and that is ALL thanks to backers like you! By using Kickstarter, we're able to gauge interest and get the game made in much larger quantities and with cheaper prices to our customers. This is a large part of why we were able to offer our last few projects at such a low price point. With this much stuff in the game and such a small company, this would only be possible with the support of the Kickstarter community.
This project in particular needs Kickstarter as we just don't know how many copies of the expansion to produce. We only expected to sell a few thousand copies of Viceroy at most when we first released it and now we have sold over 20,000 copies!
We are huge fans of accountability and keep an active google spreadsheet detailing all of our past projects as well as a tab for every unfulfilled project (just two unfulfilled at the time of this project). Both unfulfilled projects are scheduled to be fulfilled on time or early. Check out the details HERE.
Risks and challenges
Mayday has successfully handled 40 prior projects, so we know what we are doing. With this particular project, we have minimized the risks involved with our advanced preparations. If we meet our goal, this project is print ready. The factory is ready to publish, and the art and layout has already been completed. Changes to the project, if any are needed, will be completed prior to the end of the campaign.
But with our experience comes wisdom. We also know that we cannot control every factor in the chain from manufacture and printing to delivery. That is why we have built in extra time into our forecast to account for any unforeseen events that could arise. We believe the addition of this extra time will ensure that delivery of this project will NOT be delayed beyond the estimated delivery date.
We have had over 33,000 excited gamers back our previous projects, and as always, we stand behind our campaigns. We understand that there may be an occasional glitch in the delivery. If you are a previous backer, and have any missing or damaged parts, just send us a message here on Kickstarter and we will work with you to rectify the situation. Thanks again for all the support!
We have a few partially undelivered KS projects at present, but we expect to have this one delivered on time. We're putting extra time into our forecast for delivery to ensure this project will NOT be delayed beyond the estimated delivery date.
