Fun Polar Bear Facts

Did you know that polar bears actually have black skin? Their skin is black in order to absorb heat to help them stay warm, but their fur appears white so they can blend in with their environment. Polar bear hair looks white because the air spaces in the hairs scatter light of all colors. When something reflects all of the visible wavelengths of light, we see the color white. Their fur is thicker than any other species of bears' fur and covers even their feet for warmth and traction on the ice. A thick layer of blubber beneath their fur also provides insulation and buoyancy.
