Never heard of Crokinole? Well it is ranked #36 out of more than 60,000 board games of ALL TIME on BoardGameGeek.com. That's ahead of some great games like Pandemic, Small World, War Of The Rings, Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan! You owe it to yourself to check this game out!
Well fine you say, you aren't into those "euro games", well it is ranked #2 on BoardGameGeek for Family Games too! Yeah, its that good! There are tons and tons of reviews and rankings from Tom Vassel and many others, but the point is this is one of the best games out there!
So why doesn't everyone own it? PRICE POINT! The game is played on a roughly 32 inch board and weighs in at 17 pounds! To get a really nice, custom made board you will have to pay $200+ and then another $25-35 in shipping! Ouch! Who wants to spend that kind of cash on a game they have never played? And more importantly, who's significant other will approve of such a purchase?
For the last three years Mayday has been making Crokinole boards and releasing improved versions each year. Since our 2010, 2011 and 2012 boards all sold out quite quickly, we are releasing our best board yet for 2013!
So why is Mayday still making boards? We've been able to keep the retail price at or below $150 and offer them through traditional distribution channels (local game stores), something no other company can do! You can even find them discounted here and there, unheard of for any other board since no other board manufacturers support local game stores or promotes the game at conventions like GenCon and Origins and Essen each year.
In fact, the Mayday boards have been so popular that every year we have sold out of the entire production run. 2012 was no different and with more improvements we hope 2013 will be even better! But these improvements and an increased production run come at a cost, and we need your help to make this project a success!
The good news is that these new boards will be the best ones yet! You can get in on our new 2013 (4th Generation) production run for as low as $95 (First few backers only), with free shipping w/in the USA! This will allow us to budget properly, get our production levels up, and pass the savings on to you!
Step One: Back the project
Step Two: After the project ends we will email you and ask which board you want, the Sapele or the Cherry. Check out these pictures, they are the actual final product:
OK, so the game is good and the price point is good, but what about the quality of the board? We have learned a lot in the last 3 years and two factories. But still it was not enough. So in December 2012 we actually flew an expert over from the USA to the factory in Southern China to oversee the entire production process. Jeremy is a licensed contractor and an authorized installer of wooden doors/windows, etc. for a major home-improvement store in the USA. He has been a manager at a custom woodworking shop for years and knows about all there is to know about woodworking and manufacturing. Jerremy went over EVERY aspect of the production process and made significant improvements in both the manufacturing process and the final product.
So what will be new for 2013? A lot of things!
The game promises to be one of the best yet, and we are still keeping the costs way down for you Kickstarter backers. This product will retail for $150 USD but if you will back us here you can get the game for significantly less!
One of the biggest reasons we hear for people deciding to "wait" on buying a Crokinole board is the spouse factor. Maybe you just can't justify spending $100 on a game or your spouse will kill you. Probably the 2nd biggest reason people won't get a Crokinole board is the size/storage problem. Where do you store a 17 pound beast of a game? Enter the Crokinole Clock Accessory Kit.
Thousands of Crokinole Boards get sold every year and the vast majority of them end up in a box somewhere. It is hard to pull it down from the attic, pull it out of the box, and set the pegs/game up again. It is even harder to get your spouse to buy in on such a large purchase when it sits in a box most of the time. Well it got us thinking, whether you paid $99 for a Crokinole board or $400+ for an heirloom quality board, you've bought a really nice round piece of hardwood surface that just looks great. So why not keep it out of its box, make it a conversation piece and display it proudly. All of our boards already come with eyelets for picture wire on them, so you can hang your board with ease, but with our new Crokinole Clock Accessory Kit now it's always "Crokinole Time!"
We have taken the standard pegs to the Tournament Sized boards and designed a very clever foam overlay that is lightweight and sturdy, yet thick enough to support a small time-piece in the middle. We have then added to that a classic looking time-piece and some extra large hands. The result? You can now transform your Crokinole board into a fine clock. The clock mechanism itself is highly accurate and of great quality and the face is made of a high quality, non-glare PVC to hold up well with it coming on and off the board, while still looking really great!
Now step back and appreciate it! What would your significant other pay for a nice clock for the living room or family room? Go check out Amazon and see, a 28"+ wall clock will set you back several hundred bucks! You have all the makings of a beautiful 32" clock already, you just need the clock face! The beauty of this is that the nicer your crokinole board, the nicer the clock! Don't put your $400 heirloom investment under your bed or on the top of your game shelf, let is shine!
The foam pad design means the clock will stay in place when you put it there and won't hurt your board at all, but when it is time to play the clock comes off quickly and easily, and you're ready for play. The foam design is made to attach to the small wooden pegs but even thicker rubber/screw sets can easily be fitted into the clock piece, allowing for universal compatibility with virtually every crokinole board!
If you already own a board then you owe it to yourself to help us make the Crokinole Clock Kit a reality for just $20! Do you not own a board yet? Even better! Now you can get the board AND clock kit in one simple pledge for as cheap at $115 (Early Bird price), free shipping w/in the USA! Remember, you are NOT buying a game, you are buying a well-priced wooden clock!
We have the design in place and the packaging ready to go. Now all we need is to know how many we should be making, and the funds to do it. We need at least a few thousand dollars to bring this to market and we believe there are enough Crokinole lover's out there to make this happen!
We are also including a custom designed carrying case for your Crokinole board. Whether you own a board already or not, you will want a handsome carrying case to take your board with you on vacations, to the in-laws or just out to the local pub for a game night. Until now there have really been no good solutions for a Crokinole bag. There are some gong bags that sort of work, but they don't have pockets for your discs or scoring pegs and really aren't built to hold a 17+ pound wooden game.
Mayday has worked with a great bag factory in Xiamen, China to custom-design a great bag with the features a Crokinole Carrying Case needs. It will have reinforced straps, a cushioned shoulder strap, interior velcro-close storage compartment large enough to hold discs or a scoring box, and be the right size to safely transport your board! We've really gone to a lot of work getting this right, and we're offering it at a special price for early supporters!
We are sorry for those of you outside of the USA, but the bag is too big and bulky to ship to you with this KS project, though we may make it available in the future if we can. For now International buyers are limited to the Clock and Crokinole board only. The bag is too big to fit inside the Crokinole box and we just haven't found an economical way to ship such a huge bag to you!

We have some great ideas for some KS rewards including extra disc colors made available, the rubber/screw adapter set, and most exciting of all, some custom board prints that would be limited edition with less than 50 of each being made. We have talked to the factory and we can do some custom print jobs on some Crokinole boards that would look really cool and offer them here exclusively on KS if there is interest. Have a design idea, post it under the comments, all we need is a 300 DPI pdf file with a 5 MM bleed for the print and we could easily make just about any print. How about the radiation symbol? Maybe a globe or a sci-fi theme? As long as there are no licensing rights to the art we can do about any design!
Update #2: Kickstarter Rewards Announced Below!
More details coming with production pictures on Sunday, but our first custom print Crokinole board will be a beauty:
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The biggest challenge for us will be getting the right quantity of the Clock Kits and new Crokinole Boards. The more we can make the cheaper unit cost we will have, but over-producing is a terrible way to run any business into the ground. We need your help to best manage this challenge/risk.
Happily, we have already done most of the leg-work, we have two well-established factories that we know and trust and we're confident that we can produce the goods properly. We've already had over 10 successful Kickstarter projects and know what it takes to make them happen!
We have worked hard to significantly improve our Crokinole Boards and look forward to your support.
I'm not that familiar with Kickstarter. I'm trying to figure out how to 'add-on' the new disc colors to my pledge, but I can't see how to do it (or at least not how to mention which colors I want). Please give me some insight on how to order the additio
You just increase the value of your pledge amount but keep the reward unchanged. Then at the end of the KS campaign we will email you and ask what the extra funds were for. We will then add the items manually to your shipment and get them right out. If you want some extra discs just add $5 per color you want and modify the pledge value. You will keep the reward selection the same, but increase the pledge only. Hope that helps!
John asks: For someone who likes precision, this is rather glaring. One assumes that this is early production or some other issue, but I do wonder how many people that little thing puts off.
John, great question, yes you are totally right! The clock piece itself has the face that is attached to the core (back) with a few drops of rubber-type glue that you can separate from the core (back) quite easily by pulling up on the clock face a bit. Then you can spin it to whatever orientation you want and press it back onto the core (back) when you are satisfied. This way you can have the orientation however you choose. some will like the lines showing diagonally, some horizontal/vertical. There are some with custom board prints where one side is "up" and they would want a custom orientation. For this reason we have made the face of the clock in relation to the position of the pegs fully adjustable.
