Hot Lunch is a graphic novel following a ragtag crew of thieves on a mission to bring down a shadowy group of nasty restaurant owners. The goal of this Kickstarter is to raise funds needed to complete production of the 140-page black and white graphic novel and support its first print run.
We're really excited for you to #JoinTheCrew and get involved in the latest mayamada story!
Thank you to all the early backers who pushed us to the funding goal in just 9 DAYS! We're going to continue pushing with some cool stretch goals for everyone.
Stretch Goal #1
£3000 - HOT LUNCH ART BOOK: Every backer will get a digital Hot Lunch Volume 1 art book containing concept artwork and commentary from writer Nigel and artist Pinali. This will be delivered alongside your existing pledge rewards.
Stretch Goal #2
£3500 - GUEST ARTIST DIGITAL BUNDLE: Every backer will get a collection of moments from the Hot Lunch Vol.1 story recreated as full colour digital artwork by story artist Pinali plus guest artists. These include comic artist and illustrator Ryan Jenkyns, and Japanese manga artists Inko and Chie!
If we are lucky enough to hit these stretch goals, we'll keep going! We have more ideas planned so let's keep pushing!!
This campaign is more than just a book to us. It represents our belief in the power of comics and manga to keep people engaged in reading. We want to continue creating titles that are accessible to readers of all ages, opening manga up to new generations.
So what is this particular story about we hear you ask...
What Happens when Ocean's Eleven meets Robin Hood?
Hot Lunch follows Taishi, an aspiring chef forced into making a dramatic career change to master thief. Framed for a crime he didn't commit, he sets out to bring down the cabal known as the Circle of Flavour (the dastardly ones who framed him) and protect his adopted family.
If you're wondering whether this manga (Japanese style comic) is suitable for younger readers, the answer is a definite "yes!". Hot Lunch Vol.1 does NOT contain swearing, gory violence or overtly mature themes.
That said, adults will enjoy the story too, but don't just take our word for it, have a look for yourself...
Who will LOVE Hot Lunch?
- Fans of manga looking for cool new stories.
- Fans of heist stories like Thief of Thieves, Ocean's Eleven and Lupin III.
- People looking for an accessible way into manga.
- Parents, teachers or guardians looking for suitable stories to engage young readers with.
- Furries and fans of anthropomorphic comics like BlackSad.
Still not sure? Check out the FREE 15 page Hot Lunch preview before you back!
We think you'll find the Hot Lunch preview to be an intriguing intro to Taishi's story, and trust us...it only gets better from here! (if we do say so ourselves)
What others say about us:
We've been lucky enough to have also gained great reviews of our previous work online and in print:
"Not only is this a cool little action comedy, but the production quality of this volume is exquisite. Support local comics and pick one up today!" - Gemma Cox, NEO Magazine (Samurai Chef)
"A young rabbit with dreams so ambitious they'd make Lord Sugar prick his ears up..." - Gemma Cox, NEO Magazine (Serious)
"The comic remains engaging and entertaining thanks to good pacing and Pinali’s excellent character design, body language and expression..." - Jenny Robins, Broken Frontier. (Samurai Chef)
"Serious Volume 1‘s premise was simple and neatly executed...it’s a story that no one should get tired of hearing." - Dara Berkey, AP2HYC (Serious)
Allow us to introduce you to some of the key characters in the Hot lunch story...
Taishi: The main protagonist of the Hot Lunch story who unexpectedly finds himself at the centre of a Circle of Flavour conspiracy to frame him. Unfortunately for them, they picked the wrong tiger to mess with!
Caesar: The de facto leader of the Circle of Flavour and he's got the army suit to prove it! As his scar clearly shows, Caesar is one bad cat! Willing to go to any length to keep his grip on power.
Fiona: A talented straight shooter and someone who would never, ever break the rules. Ever. We thought about giving her the nickname "Miss Goody Two Shoes" but that's just mean.
Saske: The self-proclaimed Big Dog...er, pig...in the Hot Lunch story. Where Fiona keeps her talents to herself, Saske will make sure everyone knows how great she is. Taishi is her only real rival and she doesn't miss an opportunity to rub her victories in his face.
Bruce: A member of the "Chopstick Bandits", the third member recruited by Taishi. Bruce is the guy that knows a guy. Vastly experienced with all sorts of “less than legal” dealings, he became bored with making things happen for other people and retired to run a seemingly legitimate bar and restaurant. But he never lost his itch for an exciting challenge and Taishi offers him an opportunity to get back in the game that he can’t refuse. Bruce is a rhino low on patience and his blunt personality makes him very easy to read. He is often arguing with TAncho and at times it seems Taishi is the only one keeping the team together!
Tancho: The second member of the "Chopstick Bandits" to be recruited by Taishi. He is a tall red-crowned crane and a grade A narcissist. Tancho has a gentlemanly manner with a sarcastic edge and does his best to avoid getting his hands dirty. Tancho often wears dark glasses which "completes his look" along with his white suit. Personal appearance is very important to him, but his talent is planning. Tancho is excellent at executing grand plans and his meticulous nature means the details have been thought of from all angles....all he needs is other people to do the heavy lifting.
Real-life people have also been turned into characters in the story...
Danii: A special effects make-up artist and the first person to ever cosplay a mayamada character! She is now a member of Taishi's crew, bringing her costume and make up talents to his mission to bring down the Circle of Flavour. Not much is know about her but the other characters will soon become acquainted with her varied skill set.
Cyrille: One of our biggest supporters who we first met at France's Japan Expo. Luckily his Engish was better than our French and we had a great conversation! We were so happy to be able to turn him into a character who plays a key role in the story as the owner of the Bamboo restaurant, Taishi's adopted family and main motivation in the first volume of Hot Lunch.
You can make a cameo appearance too! Check out the rewards for more information ------>
We've already started production - We just need to get all pages done and printed so we can deliver the book to YOU!
Nigel + Lao: Co-founders and writers at mayamada. We created this universe of characters and between us, we write all the stories to come out of it. Little known fact...we're both engineering graduates who just loved creating stories.
Over the past years, we've learned to turn our passion for storytelling into a self-publishing manga brand. We've been so grateful to our fans and new people we've met while showcasing our stories at conventions and events across the UK, in Europe and the United States!
Pinali: We've been working with Pinali from the very first release. She has illustrated every mayamada print release from Samurai Chef to Serious and everything in between. One of the first comments we usually get at conventions is how great the artwork looks and Pinali will bring the Hot Lunch story and characters to life with more amazing visuals. We can't wait to see them!
Lara-Lee: A close friend who has been supporting the mayamada brand since its early days. Whether it's meeting new fans at conventions, directing several photoshoots or advising on copyright and trademark issues, she generally provides a much needed dose of common sense in our efforts to build this universe. She is also a great editor and has been reading Hot Lunch since the first draft, providing valuable feedback. The story wouldn't read as well without her.
Since our first crowdfunding success, we've gone on to sell over 2,000 manga books. With your support, we will deliver Hot Lunch Volume 1 to you and other readers worldwide.
We can't wait to welcome you to the hundreds of people across the world who are already enjoying our manga titles!

Risks and challenges
The support of backers on Kickstarter is vital to the success of mayamada and Hot Lunch, so your trust is very important to us.
As with any creative project, there is a chance of delay before finishing the final product. The date of delivery of all backer rewards is an estimated date that is dependant on the progress of artwork and printing.
We've relied on the invaluable experience from the many creators in our network who’ve run successful crowdfuding campaigns themselves. On top of that, we have years of experience managing creative projects and dealing with the ins and outs of production, printing, and distribution.
We've been publishing manga for over five years and have a long track record of delivering. We also have a strong relationship with a quality printer who has done great work for us in the past and prints for several creators across the UK.
So we invite you to back with confidence, as we want to be entertaining you for years to come. We'll make sure we keep all backers updated on the progress of this project and any delays as they arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
