In the watch world nothing is more serious than a dive or tool watch so when it came to designing my first diver I kept our feet rooted both in the past and the present. The result of that 7-month design project is Nereus V – a tool watch steeped in classic styling and fused with modern materials and movements.
Why a vintage inspired diver? I couldn’t find one, at least not one that met ALL the criteria I wanted and was affordable. Designed in house using the latest design and prototyping technologies Nereus V went through countless hours of scrutiny to perfect.

I chose two movements to power Nereus V. Why? I engineered Nereus V for horological enthusiasts of all levels. I want our customers to connect with the design, but not excluded because of price point.
The Limited Edition Bronze CuSn8 and Full Titanium Nereus V feature the accurate 26-Jewel Swiss Made Sellita SW200-1 Automatic Movement.
The 316L Stainless Steel Nereus V uses the ultra-accurate 4TS Quartz™ movement (Time Module - SII (Seiko) VH31) with a sweeping second hand. 4TS Quartz™ provides the convenience of a quartz but the look of a mechanical watch.
My Design Ethos was simple - create a watch that would feel at home among the most revered and classic dive watches when they first appeared in the 1950's & 1960's.
Top: Blancpain Fifty Fathoms from 1955, Rolex Submariner 6538 from 1959
Center: Eberhard Scafograf 200 from 1961
Bottom: Omega Seamaster 300 CK 14755 from 1961, Longines Nautilus Skin Diver 2961-1 (US version) from 1959
Nereus is the original Greek Sea God who was known for his truthfulness and virtue. “… Pontos, the great sea, was father of truthful Nereus who tells no lies, eldest of his sons. They call him the Old Gentleman because he is trustworthy, and gentle, and never forgetful of what is right, but the thoughts of his mind are mild and righteous.”
8th – 7th Century BC
Not only is Nereus a fitting name for a dive watch, but also exemplifies character traits befitting of the modern day man.
I dug into the horology history books and immediately connected with the case design of the first waterproof watch the Rolex Oyster from 1926. The Rolex Oyster became the inspiration for our case and lug design.
Nereus V features a 41mm Cushion Case with Heavy Wire Lugs. Shown below is the 316L Stainless Steel Case which is Polished.
The heavy wire lug (22mm) design is different than traditional wire lugs in that it uses spring bars for easy strap changes.
The 120-click unidirectional bezel for Nereus V was inspired by the first Modern Dive Watch from 1953, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms which features a domed bezel insert.
The Nereus V domed bezel is made from Sapphire and printed with Super-LumiNova® indices and numerals.
The Nereus V dial is comprised of an upper and lower dial, aka a “Sandwich Dial”. The lower dial has painted Swiss Super LumiNova® markers every five minutes with the 15 minute markers being larger.
A Date Window option is available on the Limited Edition Bronze CuSn8 and Grade 2 Titanium versions.
The signed screw-down crown is 7mm by 4mm and incorporates triple gaskets for superior water resistance of 50ATM / 500M / 1650 FT.
Classic sword hands with inlaid Swiss Super LumiNova® enables the watch to be read in low light environments.
We will be enlarging the hands on our final production pieces. Below is a rendering of the enlarged hands.
Nereus V uses a 2.5 mm thick screw-down caseback with dual gaskets for superior water resistance. We designed an engraved caseback design, however, we aren't completely sold on the overall look. Since it hasn't been finalized, maybe our backers would like to help! If interested please send an email to email@example.com or comment above.
Nereus V includes either a 22mm black or brown distressed genuine leather strap with an engraved buckle. The strap is 4mm thick and features heavy natural stitching and embossed logo in the interior of the strap. NOTE: The straps below are 22mm/22mm (lugs/buckle). The production strap will be changed to 22mm/20mm so that it tapers.
The Lower Dial, Hands and Sapphire Bezel Numerals & Indices will be printed with Swiss Super LumiNova®. The lower dial and bezel of the Nereus V prototypes used a different lume manufacture. The image below shows how these components glow.
My biggest concern in manufacturing Nereus V is managing Quality. This is why I have interim quality checks built into the timeline shown below. At the end of the day I want your Nereus V to be perfect!
I hope that you will back Nereus V, support my efforts and get a phenomenal deal on an incredible watch, but if not, that's OK. Either way I'd absolutely love it if you would share the Nereus V story through the links at the top of the campaign or by visiting Mavrik Watch Company on social media. Thanks!
Q: Is the Bronze CuSn8 and Grade 2 Titanium Versions of Nereus V Swiss Made?
No, although the Sellita SW200-1 movement is made in Switzerland Nereus V isn't cased nor inspected in Switzerland. For a watch to be considered "Swiss Made" 60% of the value of the watch needs to originate from Switzerland as well as being cased and inspected in said country. That means 40% of the value of the watch can originate from anywhere in the world. In the end a Swiss Made watch will cost you more because the labor costs associated with casing and inspection as opposed to Hong Kong where our watches are assembled.
Risks and challenges
Hello Backer or Potential Backer,
If you've made it this far down the page let me first say thank you! It means a lot to me that you've supported my campaign or are considering becoming a backer.
Like all product based Kickstarter campaigns, production delays are my biggest challenge. I've received firm commitments on lead times and have been in weekly communication with our suppliers. Should there be an issue I will communicate it immediately and adjust the fulfillment times if needed.
The prototypes have exceeded my expectations and concise quality standards have been communicated to minimize potential issues from our manufacturing partners. Quality control and packaging workflows have been created to ensure a timely fulfillment phase.
Keeping you informed is of utmost concern. Regular updates will be provided and questions answered in a timely manner.
I strive for excellence and will do whatever it takes to ensure I've exceeded our customers expectations.
If any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to ask.
