Thank You So Much To Our Backers!!
NOW WE CAN GIVE YOU MORE GIFTS!!
Support The Permaculture Student 2, the first high school textbook designed to teach homeschool and public school students how to live regeneratively.
The first volume is already in schools all over the world and is being translated into over a dozen languages. This is the next step, and schools are ready and waiting for it. I can’t wait to send the books out to everyone, but we need your help. Your donations pay for the artwork, shipping, and printing for the books and can earn you a copy of that book or another reward - everyone who donates will have their name in The Permaculture Student 2 in thanks - just like last time :) :) :). I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your help, so please donate & share this campaign.
Let’s Kickstart The Permaculture Student 2, & get permaculture into high schools, homeschools, communities, & families EVERYWHERE!!

As many of you know from supporting the first Kickstarter, I made volume 1 to be a clear, academic reference, so the definitions are based on principles, and examples are more generalized. The first volume is a perfect foundation for all permacultural understanding. That's part of why it took over 500 editors.
The process this time has taken longer as I've had to get more information and education often from the experts themselves or their publications. I've been sourcing the most recent, up-to-date books that take Bill Mollison's great work and updates sections, adds sections, and rewrites sections. We have an entire Fungi chapter, and it will be reviewed by Peter McCoy, author of Radical Mycology. We'll have an alternative energy section reviewed by Troy Martz and Ernie & Erica Wisner. Much of what Bill wrote on soils had to be rewritten simply because of Dr. Elaine Ingham's groundbreaking (pun intended) research. We'll have a large landscape repair section checked over by Neal Spackman who will also be looking over the arid climate section. We also will be included Holistic Management for Decision Making & cattle management as well as the Keyline Scale of Permanence. This really just scratches the surface of what is new in the new volume. There are literally dozens of experts involved - it's superbly exciting!!!!
My process is basically what it was as a teacher: identify the key criteria, organize it so that it is widely understandable linguistically yet keeping it on grade level cognitively, organize it in a framework that builds structured meaning as you learn, iterates to remind without being repetitive, and is rooted in real-life examples that pair with principles to give students a working example that they can apply to new situations.
About Matt Powers
Born in Connecticut, I was raised ski racing in Vermont, attended Killington Mountain School, Holderness School, and then New York University as an English Major focused on writing, classical bass, and Irish literature, and during my time in NYC I became a professional touring and recording musician, playing with folks like Shawn Pelton (SNL, Sheryl Crow, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan), Billy Gibbons of ZZtop, Matt Katz-Bohen of Blondie, Ty Dennis (The Doors as Ray Manzerek & Robby Kreiger), John Deley (Lauryn Hill, Dido), Nikki G (Beyonce), Daniel Carter (Sun Ra, Medeski Martin Wood), & John Cusimano of the Cringe, author, and husband to Rachael Ray, who used to read over my writings when I was at NYU. I even recorded an album and wrote an ebook on visual music theory (both available still on iTunes & Amazon). I had always planned on being a musician, but my plans changed when my wife was diagnosed with thyroid cancer just months after our first son, James, was born ('06). After she got cancer again 3 months later, we knew things had to drastically change.
Moving out West, I recorded and toured with bands up and down the coast & across the US. I eventually stopped - I needed to be home to support my wife & son, & I started substitute teaching K-12 in Madera & Fresno counties with a guitar on my back. It was around this time that I began gardening.
After encountering a staggering lack of skills but clear aptitude in so many of the students in those areas, I was drawn to do what I could and found a local school that was allowing and encouraging teachers to try new things in the classroom. I became a credentialed English & History teacher in the state of California, and then I created a classroom based on student choice, project-based learning, and heuristic learning. The first, few years of Minarets High School were an amazing time for me to learn about how people learn. Writing curriculum from scratch and relying entirely on one's grasp of the criteria and technique was a thrilling daily journey and challenge. It was a lot like performing on stage. I earned my Masters in Education, we had another boy, my wife suffered another bout of cancer, and we began studying food, cancer, health, organic gardening, and eventually permaculture in earnest.
I applied all my energy into understanding how to figure out how to actually make the land better where I lived and have food that was provably better. I had to protect my wife's health and my two sons who are likely more prone to having cancer. I discovered Permaculture, and ever since then I've focused my energies on translating the information I've found into forms that everyone especially children, youth, and families can learn, understand, and use permaculture in their daily lives. My wife's been cancer free now almost 5 years.
If we hit our Stretch Goal for the audiobook, we'll have a ton more to share about how we met (it involved playing bass with my teeth), how we learned about permaculture (it involves Sepp Holzer's Bone Sauce), and how we are trying to transition more each day, week, & year. Join us on the journey & support permaculture in schools everywhere!! Thank you!! MP

Risks and challenges
I do not foresee any risks or challenges as we have an amazing team that is growing constantly with experts, parents, students, educators, designers, farmers, & scientists all contributing feedback, and we already published the book from the last Kickstarter successfully and are eager and excited to do it again.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
