UPDATE #1: WE MADE IT.
I can't believe we made our funding goal with 12 days to spare! I'm SO SO appreciative of everyone who's made a pledge and THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. Go to the Updates tab for my full emotional rant on how appreciative I am, and how excited this makes me :).
Now it's time for the REACHER GOAL! I introduced this collection of music with my first official video in four years "Teardrops", and I think it came out great! While my PR company (which YOU GUYS hired for me...thanks again!) is going to be pushing that video out as far as the eye can see, it's always good to have more content to keep the momentum up. That being said, "Teardrops" director Ryan Bartley has come up with an incredible concept for a "Break-Up" video that I'd love to make for all of you. Making a music video is NOT cheap, so I don't even want to put what it would cost here BUT all future contributions will be put towards another video for EP-opener "Break-Up." Hear a preview of the track below!
Who is Matt Palmer?
Hi! I'm Matt, and I'm an R&B/Pop singer-songwriter living in Los Angeles. I grew up learning about great songwriting from the Babyfaces and Mariah Careys of the world, and started making music of my own soon thereafter. I went to NYU's Clive Davis Institute for Recorded Music, and signed my first publishing deal before I graduated. If you're already a fan of my music, you've probably heard or seen the video for "I Wish." It might have even come pre-loaded on your Blackberry!
As a songwriter, I've written songs for Big Time Rush and Leon Thomas, and worked with producers like Oak Felder (Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj) , Fraser T. Smith (ADELE, Britney Spears), and Jackie Boyz (Madonna, Justin Bieber). As an artist, I've partnered with labels and publishers to put out music that I loved but was never truly representative of me. This time around, I've created a new video & EP that was completely my vision, and I couldn't be prouder. Check out the video for my first single "Teardrops" from my upcoming Stranger Than Fiction EP below.
Stranger Than Fiction
I've spent the last six years fighting for a dream that the world tried to tell me is out of reach. While writing for other artists is fulfilling in its own right, I always wanted to be the one singing my songs from my perspective. As a writer, there's a limit to how much of yourself can be put into songs for someone else.
So last year, after leaving a difficult publishing situation, I stopped writing songs that were meant to be hits for other artists. I wrote in my room alone, like I had in high school and college, and created songs that truly represented me.
When pitching this project to others in the industry, I was told that there would never be a space for a gay musician in mainstream music. Some producers even refused to work with me because the songs used male pronouns. Luckily, I found the right producers to bring these demos to life, and with your help, we can prove each and every one of these naysayers wrong.
What You're Funding
The writing, vocal recording, and vocal arrangements have been completed in my home studio, and about half of the songs have been produced by production duo DFRNS and the incredible Drew Scotty. Your pledge of support will help get the remaining songs produced.
Beyond the production, I am going to be releasing physical copies of this EP as well, and your pledge will go towards manufacturing that first run. Lastly, I'm looking to hire a PR Company because I think this EP is something special, and I want to make sure it reaches an audience.
Preview Cover Art Now
Knowing that I'd be unable to release music of my own in 2013, I recorded an album of covers that all supporters who pledge $20 or more will receive. You can stream a preview of Cover Art here.
Risks and challenges
The biggest setbacks that could arise after the project is funded are all timetable related. It has been a long time since I released original music, so I've set an aggressive schedule & while an April release is certainly doable, it is hard to be an army of one at this point in the process. There's always the chance that my amazing producers are unavailable for a quick turn around on these final productions, or the album manufacturing holds up the process.
The second scheduling concern I have is over a seventh song I'd like to include on the EP. It has a sound that I truly think could round out album but it's admittedly in an earlier stage of the recording process than the others. There's a possibility Stranger Than Fiction will have six tracks instead of seven.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
